I was   18  that I was right and he was wrong — and he was sure that I was wrong and he was right. The  19 decided to teach us a very important lesson. She  20 both of us up to the   21  of the class and   22  him on one side of her desk and me on   23 . In the middle of her desk was a large, round object. I could   24  see that it was black. I couldn't believe he said the object was white,  26 it was obviously black! Another  27  started between my classmate and me, this   28   about the color of the object.
The teacher told me to go stand where the boy was standing and told him to come stand where I had been. We changed   29  , and now she asked me what the color of the object was. I   30  answer, "White." It was an object with two   31  colored sides, and from his side it was white.   32  from my side was it black.
My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day: You must   33  in the other person's shoes and look at the   34  through their eyes in order to   35  understand their view.

Many years ago I was on a bicycle trip through some exceedingly picturesque (如畫(huà)的) countryside. Suddenly, dark clouds piled up overhead and rain began to fall, but strange to ___50___, several hundred yards ahead of me the sun shone brilliantly. Riding, however, as rapidly as I could, I found it ___51___ to get into the clear. The clouds with their rain kept advancing faster than I could race forward. I continued this unequal contest for an exhausting half hour, ___52___ realizing that I could not win my way to the bright area ahead of me.
Then it dawned upon me that I was wasting my strength in unimportant hurry, while paying no attention whatsoever to the landscape ___53___ which I was making the trip. The storm could not last forever and the discomfort was not unendurable. Indeed, there was much to look at which might ___54___ have escaped me. As I gazed about with sharpened ___55___, I saw colours and lines and shapes that would have appeared differently under brilliant light. The rain mists (薄霧) which now ___56___ the wooded hills and the fresh clearness of the different greens were entrancing (迷人的). My annoyance at the rain was gone and my eagerness to ___57___ it disappeared. It had provided me with a new view and helped me understand that the ___58___ of beauty and satisfaction may be found close at hand within the ___59___ of one’s own sensibilities.
It made me think, then and later, about other matters to which this incident was related. It helped me realize that there is no sense in my ___60___ ever to flee from circumstances and conditions which cannot be avoided but which I might bravely ___61___ and frequently mend and often turn to good account. I know that half the battle is won if I can face trouble with courage, __62__ with spirit, and triumph with humility. It has become ever clearer to me that danger is far from disaster, that defeat may be the forerunner of final ___63___, and that, in the last analysis, all achievement is dangerously weak ___64___ based on enduring principles of moral conduct.

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss, or an insensitive employee  1  your day?
Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab. One day I was in a taxi and we headed   2  the airport. We were driving in the  3  lane when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space right in front of us.  My taxi driver slammed on his  4, slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and  5  the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, looked around and started  6  at us.
My taxi driver just  7 and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was  8, so I said,"Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call "The Law of the Garbage Truck".
He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of 9 full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage  10  up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on 11 .  Don’t take it personally; Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Believe me. You’ll be  12 .”
So I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and  13  it to other people at work, at home, or on the street? It was then that I said, “I don’t want their garbage and I’m not going to spread it anymore.”
Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with 14 . The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s 15  in your life. See, Roy Baumeister, a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his extensive research that you __16  bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you __17  them more frequently. So love the people who treat you right. Ignore the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you _18  it!The odds are against you when a Garbage Truck comes your way, but when you follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”,you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by  19 go of the bad.
Have a Garbage-Free Day!Have a marvelous, garbage-free day!The seeds you plant today  20  the harvest you reap tomorrow.

I recently heard a story about a famous scientist who had made several very important medical breakthroughs(突破). He was being interviewed by a reporter who asked him    1   he thought he was able to be so much more    2   than the average person.
He responded that it all came from a(n)   3   with his mother that occurred when he was about 2. He had been trying to   4  milk from the fridge when he    5   the slippery(光滑的) bottle, its contents running all over the kitchen floor.
When his mother came in,    6   shouting at him or giving him a lecture, she said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful    7   you have made! I have    8   seen such a huge pool of milk. Well, the damage has already been    9  . Would you like to get down and    10   in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to restore everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge(海綿), a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?” He chose the sponge.
His mother then said, “ You know, what we have here is a    11  experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two    12   hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can   13 .” The little boy learned that if he    14   the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful    15  !
This scientist then said that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be    16  to make mistakes. Instead, he learned that mistakes were just    17   for learning something new, which is,    18  , what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment “doesn't   19 ,” we usually learn something    20   from it.

The sun shines brightly as I leave school, get into my car, and head for Bradley Hospital. This year, as a senior at Seekonk High School, I have been given the opportunity to leave the usual classroom setting once a week to volunteer.
I   1  to spend this valuable time working with mentally disabled children at Bradley Children’s Hospital. I work   2  a teacher in the outpatient/pre-school section, in a classroom with two children— a classroom very different from   3  I have ever known. The difference of this classroom is   4  the children have been diagnosed with a mental disease. One child is autistic and non-verbal(自閉和不說(shuō)話的), using supportive   5 . The other has a condition called PDD (one step above autism), and is   6  non-verbal. Both childrenrequire strong   7  and a lot of attention. This combination creates an atmosphere which is both demanding and sympathetic.
My   8  in the classroom is not only to help the teacher, but to become part of the children’s   9  experience. I work one-on-one completing academics with a student.   10 , we work as a group on such activities as cooking, artwork, abstract reasoning. Everyday activities, which may be taken for granted by others,   11  a lot of strength from the children. This has opened my eyes vastly.
One of the   12  reasons why I volunteer to take the work is that I desire to help those who are less   13 . However, it has also helped me to realize my competence. I now know that I have the   14  to work with the disabled. I have lost my fear, and I   15  myself a lot more.
It is true that my work is very   16 ; there are many days that I   17  Bradley exhausted emotionally and physically. There have been times when I have left on the edge of tears   18 . But pity doesn’t heal, love does. And I have grown to love these children in my own way,   19  I see them only once a week. This experience has been both rewarding and satisfying. I’ve learned also that I do have the ability to make a difference in their lives, no matter how small it may be. One smile makes it all   20 .

I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. She had just moved into the neighborhood and her grandmother brought her down to 1   me. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother,  2  to look at each other. Soon, we lost the shyness and started playing with each other. In 7th grade, I first lost 3   with her. She was  4   family problems and I deserted her.  5   of my new friends liked her 6  they knew she had “problems”.
It was last year when I noticed the 7  . I guess I was just to catch up in high school to realize she 8  someone there for her. I didn’t know 9, but she started cutting herself!
She was 10  from clinical depression(抑郁), and had to go to a 11  during the day. I was very upset at first but with the late night 12 , and meeting each other at midnight. I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend once 13  her since people were calling her crazy.
Yesterday she came to me and said this:“I never knew what a best friend was 14  you were the only person that would 15 me from cutting; the only person that ever made me feel better about myself and my problems. You don’t know this but I was trying to 16  myself that night you called me. You didn’t even know you were 17  me. I owe you so much.”
We both cried. And I guess a kind of 18  from my life is:“never give up on your friends”. Even if they aren’t as cool as others, or people think they are 19 , they need someone there. If you desert them, you will only be 20  yourself. So if a friend needs you, and you care for them, you can never desert them.
