Johnny was a cashier (收銀員) in a large store. Every night when he came home from work, he would find a saying for the day and print it out on fifty pages of paper. Johnny would cut out each saying and sign his name at the bottom of each one. Then he would put them in a paper bag and put the bag beside him at work. Each time he finished bagging someone’s purchases, he would put one of his saying pieces in the customer’s bag as well. It touched me to think that this young man —with a job that most people thought not important —had made it important by creating precious memories for all of his customers. A month later the store manager called me and said, "Barbara, you won’t believe what happened today. When I went up to where the cashiers were, I found Johnny’s line was three times longer than anyone else’s! So I got more cashiers out there and opened more lanes (通道), but no one would move. They all said they wanted Johnny’s saying for the day." The store manager continued, "I got a lump in my throat when a woman came up to me and said, 'I used to shop at your store only once a week, but now I come in every time I go by for Johnny’s sayings.’" A few months later, the store manager called me again. "Johnny has changed our store completely," he said. "All of our cashiers now have their own personal signatures (簽名). Everyone’s having a lot of fun creating good memories. Our customers are talking about us in a good way and are coming back with their friends."

In ancient China tea was probably used as a relish(開(kāi)胃小菜) and as a medicine. Tea was first brewed(煮泡) as a medicine around 2,700 BC in the western mountains of China. Tea was likely seen as healthy in part because it was made with boiled water, which is safer to drink in an area of polluted water.
Tea drinking, and commercial cultivation(種植),spread during the Tang Dynasty, 618-907, especially after a Buddhist monk(佛教僧侶), wrote a book on the virtues of tea, Cha Ching. Tea gradually became one of the seven basic necessities of Chinese life (The others are fuel, rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar.)
A Japanese Buddhist priest, Saicho, is believed to have introduced tea to Japan, when he returned from a visit to China in 805. In Japan tea drinking was considered medicinal, and became closely associated with Zen Buddhism(禪宗).
Tea drinking also spread to Korea and Southeast Asia, and was taken over the Silk Road to Central Asia, Russia, and the Middle East.
Dutch explorers became familiar with tea in the 1590s and were soon importing tea to Europe. In 1657 the British East India Company held the first public sale of tea in England, while that same year Thomas Garraway began offering tea at his London coffee house.
In 1662 tea received a big boost(推進(jìn)) in England when the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza, married King Charles II and introduced tea drinking to the British court.
Gradually, the British fell in love with tea, and with the sugar that went in it. In 1665, less than 88 tons of sugar was imported to Great Britain. By 1700, it had increased to 10,000 tons of sugar. In 1768 the East India Company imported 10 million pounds of tea to Britain.
1. Tea has been used as a medicine in China for _________.
A. about 8,000 years B. about 4,700 years
C. about 2,200 years D. about 2,700 years
2. Tea began to spread as a popular drink in China because of _______.
A. the Silk Road B. the basic necessities of Chinese life

Experts say that agriculture provides fourteen percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions each year. The gases released include carbon dioxide, a major cause of global warming.
Twenty-one nations around the world recently joined forces to better understand and prevent greenhouse gas emissions from farms. The Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases was launched at the United Nations conference on climate change. The meeting took place in Copenhagen, Denmark last month.
Agricultural experts blame a number of farm activities for producing greenhouse gases. For example, animal waste and cattle digestive systems release methane (甲烷,沼氣) gas.Fertilized soil and the burning of crop waste also release harmful gases into the air.Experts say some methods of farming ?turning the soil to prepare for planting ?also release harmful carbon dioxide.
An official of the European Commission's Directorate General for Research says agricultural greenhouse gas emissions can be cut.Maive Rute suggests feeding animals a diet designed to reduce emissions.
The new agricultural research group says protecting against global warming is only part of its purpose. It says the world also needs to develop better farming methods to feed growing populations in poor countries.
United States Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said no one single nation can fight agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and increase food production at the same time. This is why the alliance is important for combining resources and finding new ones.
The United States Department of Agriculture will increase spending on farm emissions research by ninety million dollars over the next four years. The total will reach one hundred thirty million dollars. The U.S.D.A.will share the research with other countries in the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases and support researchers from developing countries that belong to the alliance.Money from the Borlaug Fellowship program will let the researchers study agricultural climate change with American scientists.
Mister Vilsack said that just as climate change has no borders, there should be no borders for research.

A.Action or state being joined together
B.An agreement signed between countries
C.A program or project set up for a research
D.An organization formed for different goals

Compared to adults, children seem to be moving constantly. So it's no surprise that most parents who are quizzed about their child's physical activity level describe their children as fairly active. But a new study of nearly 2,000 British school children suggests that many parents overestimate the amount of physical activity their children are really getting.
The researchers equipped 1,892 British school children, ages 9 and 10, with accelerometers that measure all physical activity during a given time period. The research, known as the Speedy study collected the exercise data from children at 92 schools in Norfolk, England, between April and July 2007.
A child was regarded inactive if he or she recorded less than an hour a day of physical activity.Although the majority of children studied were getting enough physical activity, a sizable minority of children were not.Overall, 39 percent of girls and 18 percent of boys studied were getting less than an hour of physical activity each day.
But if you asked the parents of the inactive children to describe their child's activity level, the vast majority—80 percent—described their children as fairly or very physically active, according to the findings published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.Interestingly, the children themselves had more awareness about their lack of physical activity.Overall, 40 percent of children overestimated their physical activity.
But it wasn't the parents of overweight children who were most likely to guess wrong about physical activity levels. The parents who were most out of touch about their child's physical fitness were more likely to have children who were slim.Parents of girls were also more likely to overestimate physical activity. The researchers noted that parents should be educated about the importance of physical activity for children even if the child is not overweight.
"Parents of slim children appear to assume that their children are adequately active," the study authors reported."Increasing awareness regarding health benefits of physical activity beyond weight control might help have a correct idea of physical activity levels and encourage behavior change."
69.According to the Speedy study, what kind of children can be judged physically inactive?
A.Slim children.
B.Children with less than an hour a day of physical activity.
C.Overweight children.
D.Children out of touch with their parents for a long time.
70.What does the writer probably mean by saying "a sizable minority of children were not" in Paragraph 3?
A.The amount of children's physical activity is far from the writer's satisfaction.
B.Only a small number of children were not getting enough physical activity.
C.A small number of children didn't overestimate their physical activity.
D.The minority of children were not studied at all.
71.The passage is intended to ____.
A.encourage parents to fairly judge their child's physical activity levels
B.persuade parents to keep an eye on their children's weight
C.urge children to wear accelerometers during exercise
D.a(chǎn)dvise parents to keep in touch with their children

Pretoria, South Africa – Hundreds of swimmers play in the water along a South Africa beach. Suddenly a huge shark appears off shore and heads for the bathers. Before it can get close to the swimmers, the shark, for some mysterious reason, starts swimming parallel to the beach. Then it turns away from the shore and heads out to sea, leaving the swimmers untouched.
Such a scene will soon become common along shark-in-fasted (鯊魚成群的) shores. An electrical engineer from the University of Pretoria has developed an electrical system that repels (擊退) sharks by controlling their movements. Confused by this action, the sharks end up turning away from the beach.
In this unusual shark-repellent method, an insulated (絕緣的) cable is buried on the bottom of the sea around a beach where people swim. When an electric current is sent through the cable, an electric field is produced in the water above the cable.
When shark swims into the electric field, nerve cells just below the shark' s skin will sense the field. The electricity produces a reflex (反射作用) action in the shark' s muscles, causing the dangerous animal to swim parallel to the cable. Confused by increasing loss of control of its muscles, the shark suddenly changes its direction and heads seaward, away from the electric field.
In a test of the invisible new shark-repellent system, a cable was placed around a beach in St. Lucia, an island around the beach a long time ago to keep sharks away from swimmers, and a net was left in place during the experiment.
When the electric field was left on for more than a year and a half, no sharks were found in the net. However, when the power was turned off,89 sharks ended up in the net.
Using the electric-wall method instead of net to protect bathers would avoid the needless death of many sharks, said biologists. Currently, thousands of sharks die each year when they become trapped in protective nets that surround holiday resorts in Africa and Australia. About 10 to 15 humans are killed by sharks annually.
1.Why doesn' t the shark attack the swimmers according to the passage?
A.Because there are so many swimmers in the water.
B.Because the shark isn’t so hungry as to eat the swimmers.
C.Because of some mysterious power from the heaven.
D.Because there is an invisible electric field confusing the shark.
2.An electrical engineer from the University of Pretoria has developed __ .
A.a(chǎn) protective net
B.a(chǎn) new shark-repellent system
C.the electric field
D.a(chǎn)n insulated cable
3.An electric field is produced in the water above the cable .
A.only when a shark swims into the electric field
B.only when an insulated cable is buried on the bottom of the sea around a beach where people swim
C.only when an electric current is sent through the cable
D.only when the sharks are trapped in protective nets
4.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Protective nets had been fixed earlier than the new shark-repellent system.
B.The new shark – repellent system will probably replace the protective nets.
C.Thousands of sharks have died each year since this new system was put into use.
D.Using the electric-wall instead of nets would avoid the needless death of many sharks.
