閱讀下列短文, 從每題所給的選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卷上將該項涂黑。
A
One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking, as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.
Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers.
As technology shrinks our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring team action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates are not ours alone to control.
In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as time has passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. so, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road, what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat, but a shared moment of trust.

Recently I gave my adult students homework. It was “go to someone you love and tell them you love them.” It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven’t shared those words with for a long time.
It sounds like very tough homework since most of the men were over 35 and were raised in the generation of men that were taught expressing emotions is not “macho (陽剛之氣).” Showing feelings or crying was just not done. So this was very threatening homework for some.
At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand, quite moved and a bit shaken.
As he unfolded out of his chair (all 1.85 meters of him), he began by saying, “Dennis, I was quite angry with you last week when you gave us this homework. Who were you to tell me to do something that personal?”
“But as I began driving home my conscience (良心)started telling me that I knew exactly who I needed to say ‘I love you’ to.”
“Five years ago, my father and I had a severe disagreement and really never settled it since then. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other.”
“So last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself. I was going to tell my father I loved him. It’s strange, but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.”
【小題1】 The homework is threatening for some students because_________.
A.they are middle-aged people | B.they are not macho enough |
C.they were taught to hide their emotions | D.they didn’t know how to show feelings |
A.the adult students have classes in the day time only |
B.not all the adult students in the writer’s class are male |
C.the man refused to meet his father after their quarrel |
D.the man quickly decided to say “I love you” to his father |
A.stood on his chair straight | B.sat quietly in the chair |
C.bent himself over his chair | D.raised himself slowly from the chair |
A.He felt it too strange to say “I love you” to his father. |
B.He felt relaxed just thinking of saying “I love you” to his father. |
C.He felt very relaxed after saying “I love you” to his father. |
D.He had to lift a heavy load off his chest before saying “I love you”. |

You must have been troubled by when to say “I love you” because it is one of the greatest puzzles in our life.
What if you say it first and your partner doesn’t love you back? Or if they do say it but you don’t feel they mean it? Being the first to declare your love can be nerve racking(緊張)and risky and can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it first really in a position of weakness? Doesn’t it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the other half has shown their hand fast?
A really good relationship should be about “being fair and being equal,” says psychologist Sidney Crown. “But love is seldom equal.” All relationships go through power struggles but, he says, if a love imbalance continues for years, the rot will set in. “That feeling of ‘I’ve always loved you more’ may be subverted(顛覆,破壞) for a time, but it never goes away completely and it often emerges in squabbling(大聲爭吵).” In love, at least, the silent, withholding type is not always the most powerful. “The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough to talk about their feelings,” says educational psychologist Ingrid Collins. Psychosexual therapist Paula Hall agrees. “The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. In fact, the person who says ‘I love you’ first may also be the one who says ‘I’ m bored with you’ first.” Hall believes that much depends on how “I love you” is said and the motivation of the person saying it. “Is it said when they’re drunk? Is it said before their partner files off on holiday, and what it really means is ‘Please don’ t be unfaithful to me’ ?” By saying ‘I love you’, they are really saying ‘Do you love me?’ If so, wouldn’t it just be more honest to say that. Collins agrees that intention is everything. “It’s not what is said, but how it’s said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of the speaker.”

It may take you some thinking time to get it done . . . and now . . . here are your tips . . . . .

From a young age, it was my dream to go to Africa and work with animals. Everybody laughed at me, but my mother, Vanne, told me never to give up, and that I could always find a way.
So, when I was 23, after saving up my earnings from working as a waitress, I went to wild, untamed (野性的) Africa and began my work. In 1960 I went to the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve. At that time, we knew nothing of the behavior or social structure of chimps (黑猩猩), and I was to go there and see what I could find out. Usually, when you wake up, you leave your dreams behind you, but I found myself waking up to my dream.
As the British government wouldn’t let me go without older women’s company, my amazing mother came with me and stayed for four months. We shared a second-hand army tent, and we used the stream for fresh water and washing. We could swim in the lake, although there were crocodiles.
It was beautiful there, although both my mother and I nearly died of malaria (瘧疾). I was scared I wouldn’t be able to do what I had set out to, because, at first, the chimps ran away from me in fear. I spent my days watching, listening, tracking and in the evenings writing up my notes.
For my mother, who stayed back at the camp, it must have been terrifying, and very lonely. There were snakes and spiders, as well as an old leopard who would come by. But she had an amazing way with people, and would hand out medicines to the fishermen, who saw her as a witch doctor.
In my fifth month there, I finally saw one of the chimps, which I called David Greybeard, stripping (剝光) straw to “fish” for termites (白蟻). It proved that man wasn’t the only toolmaker, and that everything had to be redefined.
【小題1】What does the author mean by saying “I found myself waking up to my dream” in the second paragraph?
A.She lacked sleep due to busy work. |
B.She found her dream was hard to realize. |
C.She had more new dreams about her work. |
D.She tried to realize her dream every day. |
A.there were crocodiles in the lake | B.she could not get close to the chimps |
C.it was hard to get clean water | D.the chimps attacked her sometimes |
A.helpful and warm-hearted | B.funny and selfish |
C.romantic and talkative | D.honest and hardworking |
A.She found a new kind of termite. |
B.Chimps can communicate with each other. |
C.Some other animals can also make tools. |
D.Chimps can find medicines to cure themselves. |

The trend in everyday conversation is to use grandiose(夸大的)words.“Outstanding” is the
new “good,” “amazing” is the new “OK, ” and “huge” is the new “big.”
I was in a restaurant in Washington D.C.last weekend and every question I asked was answered with exaggeration.
Me:How is the salmon?
Sever:Fantastic!
Me:Does it come with rice?
Sever:Absolutely!
Would a “good” and a “yes” have been enough? Of course!
My father is an average-sized man.He hasn’t gained weight or height for the past 30 years. Therefore, his size remains the same. However,in the same amount of time, his T-shirt size has gone from small to medium to large to extra large.
The reason for the exaggerated word is clear:we are bored with our lives. We want the next
—next thing now.Immediately!
And we also want others to think that we still care, that we can still be delighted, that we know that everything is just great.Even when deep inside we know it can’t be.Everything can’t be great.
I’m not a scientist,so many methods of proof leave little to be desired,or a lot to be desired,or an immensity(無限).
Listen to the voices around you.Listen to your own voices. There is nothing on the radio that is good or bad, weather is either beautiful or horrible.
Listen, the next time when someone asks you something and you agree, because when you
could simply say “yes”, instead you will say “absolutely’’ or “without doubt ” or “Oh,yeah, unquestionably ---- absolutely without doubt."
Have people forgotten what it is like to be OK? Simply OK with what they have and who they are? If everything is outstanding,if everything is the most amazing thing ever,is anything ever amazing at all?

Four years ago my sweet mom went to be with her Lord. She did it her way.
I got the call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception.
My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land and loved to work in the garden among her flowers and vegetables. The place was rustic, with no indoor plumbing or heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to me.
In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized. Her favorite song was "Moon River" and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories about how when I was a little girl, I could sing before I could talk. She loved to tell how my playpen(嬰兒圈欄)sat in the kitchen next to the radio and there was one song I particularly loved called "Ivory Tower".
As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit every week or two. The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad. Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell all the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle(喧鬧)of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced.
Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio. Music always comforted me.
My heart skipped a beat. "Moon River" was playing on the radio. I sat there stunned, with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note.
Then the radio announcer of this oldie station came on. "Here's one we haven't heard in a while," and an unfamiliar song began. I began to cry harder as I heard the words sung over the airwaves. "Come down, come down from your Ivory Tower...."

科目: 來源:2011屆江蘇省宿豫中學(xué)高三第二次模擬英語卷 題型:閱讀理解
There is, for many of us, a moment in life when we make a choice that changes us forever. This moment marks a turning point, when we realize that the life we're living is not a mirror of who we really are.
For some, the moment comes as a result of something dramatic: the sudden loss of a job, or the death of a loved one. For others, they have to deal with difficult situations, such as financial hardship. In these challenging times, it's more critical(關(guān)鍵時刻的) than ever for us to seize the possibility of positive change. As I travel and talk to people about their lives, I often see a distant, vacant look in their eyes -- a look that says “I’m so busy trying to survive my life that no soul left to live it”.
As a result, we end up feeling lonely. Yet we keep on going the way we've been going. We tolerate high levels of stress at work, take important relationships for granted, or put our health needs on hold. We get so caught up in the details of living that our busyness becomes an excuse from the inner voice that begs us to listen. When you finally pay attention to that little voice and begin to make even small changes, you will slowly improve yourself.
To start positive change, you need the power of your mind. I've come up with a five-step strategy that will help you. You will be able to identify what you want and then go after it. It's easier than you might think.
1. Reset your happiness set point. Don't limit yourself! When I decided that I wanted more control over my life, I set goals in physical, emotional, financial, professional, material, and play. I challenged myself to consider every possible choice. Imagine things you've never believed you could achieve. Don't let your past determine your future.
2. Trust your courage. Too often, when you're first learning to take control of your life, you doubt yourself. It's important to develop a strong connection with your inner guidance system. I've heard many stories about the persistent voice inside your head.
3. Take action. Once you have set goals, adjusted your beliefs, and got ready, you can start making things happen. Again, turn to those people you respect -- the ones achieving what you desire -- for support and guidance. They will both inspire you and give you practical advice on what steps you need to take.
4. Have faith. Believe that the positive energy of grace will support your efforts to improve your life. When you've done all you can, let go and trust that the right result will occur. When we have faith, we give up the need to be in control, and we set ourselves up to actually enjoy the process of change.
5. Be patient. This can be the toughest step. It's not easy to trust that your life will improve in a best way. Remind yourself of the benefits of patience. In my experience, those life changes are always worth the wait.
【小題1】What does the author intend to say in the second paragraph?
A.The start of some turning points in one’s life is caused by crisis. |
B.Loss of a job or the death of a loved one are all dramatic things. |
C.No one can live a life without any turning points. |
D.No one can predict his future of being good or not. |
A.a(chǎn)djust our beliefs from time to time | B.a(chǎn)lways control ourselves for anything |
C.keep on going the way we are going | D.seize the challenging times to live an active life |
A.know the limitation of your set point | B.build self-confidence without doubt |
C.limit your goals in different ways | D.consider every possible choice with care |
A.When you've done all you can, you may believe that the right result will occur. |
B.When you set goals, and take action, it is possible to make things happen. |
C.When you first learn to take charge of your life, you will always doubt yourself. |
D.If things do not happen in a way that is best, patience is always worth the wait. |
