In a surprising discovery about where higher life can survive, scientists have found a shrimp —— like creature and a jellyfish swimming beneath an Antarctic ice sheet.
About 180 meters below the ice where no light can get through, scientists had thought nothing much more than a few microbes (微生物) could exist.
That’s why a NASA team was surprised when they lowered a video camera to get the first long look at the underbelly of an ice sheet in Antarctica. A curious shrimp – like creature came swimming by and then parked itself on the camera’s cable. Scientists also pulled up a tentacle (觸須) they believe came from a jellyfish.
“We were operating on the presumption that nothing’s there.” Said NASA ice scientist Robert Bindschadler. “It was a shrimp you’d enjoy having on your plate.”
“We were just gaga (狂熱的) over it,” he said of the 7.5cm long, orange creature starring in their two – minute video. Technically, it’s not a shrimp. It’s a Lyssianasid amphipod, which is distantly related to the shrimp.
The video is likely to inspire experts to rethink what they know about life in harsh environments. And it has scientists thinking that if shrimp – like creatures can live below 180 meters of Antarctic ice in freezing dark water, what about other cold places? What about Europa, a frozen moon of Jupiter?
Cynan Ellis – Evans, a scientist of the British Antarctic Survey called the finding fascinating. He said it was possible the creatures swam in from far away and don’t live there permanently.
But Kim, who is a co-author of the study, doubts it. “The site in West Antarctica is at least 19 km from open seas. Bindschadler drilled a 20 cm – wide hole and was looking at a tiny amount of water. That means it’s unlikely that two creatures swam from great distances and were captured randomly in that small of an area,” she said.
Yet scientist were puzzled at what the food source would be for these creatures. While some microbes can make their own food out of chemicals in the ocean, complex life like the shrimp can’t, Kim said.
“So how do they survive? That’s the key question.” Kim Sai.
“It’s pretty amazing when you find a huge puzzle like that on a planet where we thought we know everything.” Kim said.
【小題1】 What does the underlined word “harsh” probably mean?

A.coldB.loudC.cruelD.ugly
【小題2】According to Kim, the shrimp – like creature        .
A.swam great distances to AntarcticB.has always lived in the region
C.gradually evolved from shrimpsD.has nothing in common with shrimps
【小題3】The finding is significant in that           .
A.it marks NASA’S first Antarctic biological study
B.it proves there is marine life in the Antarctic
C.it could inspire further study of life in harsh environments
D.it shows that Lyssianasid amphipod is closely related to shrimps
【小題4】Which of the following statements about the discovery is FALSE?
A.Complex life usually lives on other forms of life.
B.Scientists saw two creatures in the two – minute video.
C.It is possible for creatures to live 180 meters below the ice though there is no light.
D.Scientists captured the shrimp – like creature in a camera by drilling a hole through the ice.

Good news for game lovers― a tank game has come out recently. In this game you are in a tank and the screen shows your view of the landscape outside. You gain points by shooting enemy tanks, supertanks, missiles (導(dǎo)彈) and flying saucers(飛碟).
Expert players can gain scores of around 150,000 points at this game. To get a high score you have to destroy twenty tanks as quickly as possible. After this, the supertanks, missiles and flying saucers appear. These are worth far more points than the ordinary tanks. However, the number of tanks you have to destroy before the supertanks appear varies on different machines.
Try to get close to an enemy tank from the side or the back, so it cannot shoot at you. Then, when you get close, turn to face it, line it up in your sights and fire before it turns to shoot at you. If you miss or are too slow, quickly escape by moving out of the enemy's line of fire. You can then move around the enemy and come in from another side.
When a supertank appears, try to destroy it as quickly as possible. Then wait safely behind an obstacle(障礙物)for a missile or flying saucer. The cubes are useful objects to hide behind as you can fire over them without exposing yourself to danger. The missiles will fly straight at you, but they are difficult to hit, so do not shoot at them until they are quite close. The saucers are much easier to hit, but do not follow them as you will be open to attack from enemy tanks.
60. This passage is an / a ______ about a game.
A. instruction    B. liberation        C. tradition     D. construction
61. If you hide behind the cubes during an attack, which of the following may not happen?
A. Avoiding being exposed to danger     B. Destroying a missile
C. Firing over missiles or flying saucers   D. Being hit by a missile
62. If you can destroy a supertank, missile or flying saucer, you will get_____.
A. many more points        B. a machine to play with
C. an ordinary tank         D. nothing
63. From the last sentence we can see that you are likely to be attacked by tanks if you_____.
A. hit a flying saucer            B. run after a flying saucer
C. fire straight at a missile        D. shoot at enemy tanks

China has now mapped out plans for its next four launches in the Shenzhou program on the next flight. But one conclusion seems to have escaped most reports in the aerospace media. The flight of Shenzhou 7 could be timed to coincide with the Beijing Olympics. Plans for the 2008 Summer Olympics call for the events to be held between the 8th and 24th of August. It's reasonable to expect that China will use the event to promote its achievements before the world, and human spaceflight is China's most significant recent breakthrough.
Shenzhou 7, China's next manned space mission, was originally advertised for 2007. This fit into the pattern of staging a two-year gap between crewed Shenzhou missions, which have previously launched in 2003 and 2005. But Chinese media statements have recently amended this to 2008. Chinese media have reported that while the overall program is going well, more time is needed to work on the spacesuit that will be used on this flight to stage China's first spacewalk. It's possible that Chinese engineers want to make best preparations for this complex mission.
China could intend to carry out the mission of Shenzhou 7 just as media attention is focused on the lead-up to the Olympics. The crew of the flight, and possibly China's other flown astronauts, could then take part in the opening ceremony. China has previously feted her space travellers in great celebrations, such as the Hong Kong event that saw Yang Liwei singing with actor Jacky Chan.
China has also suggested that the activity will be carried out by a single astronaut, and has indicated that half an hour is a rough estimate of the planned time for the spacewalk. China is apparently following suit, probably for the same reasons of conservative mission planning and safety.
41. From the first paragraph we can infer that ________.
A. China hasn’t made its plan for the Beijing Olympics
B. The new Shenzhou program are known to all the reporters
C. China has planned to send up Shenzhou 7 in 2008

A. make the Beijing Olympics more interesting
B. show its great achievements to the world
C. prove that China is a developed country
D. introduce its science and technology to the world
43. Which one of the following is WRONG according to this passage?
A. China sent its first manned spacecraft in October of 2003.
B. Chinese engineers want to make more preparations for Shenzhou 7.
C. The spacesuit for the flight of Shenzhou 7 hasn’t been prepared well.
D. Two Chinese astronauts walked in space in 2003.
44. The underlined word “amended” in the passage has a similar meaning to ______.
A. improve            B. change                     C. expect               D. decide
45. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. The Beijing Olympics.                        B. The Shenzhou Olympics.
C. China’s Shenzhou Program.                 D. Spacewalk in 2008.

A light emitting diode (發(fā)光二極管), or L.E.D., is a device that shines when electricity passes through it.But it works differently than traditional kinds of light bulbs.Light emitting diodes use less energy and last much longer than bulbs with a filament (燈絲) inside.L.E.                               D.’s are also cooler to the touch, and shine a lot brighter than they used to.
Red L.E.D.’s have long been used as signal lights on electronic equipment. But now light emitting diodes also come in blue and other colors.Colored L.E.D.’s are used to show images on everything from wireless phones to huge video signs. And white L.E.D.’s are being used increasingly to replace traditional lighting systems.
But all these require electricity. In poor countries, people often burn fuel to produce light. But the smoke can make people sick.So an electrical engineering professor from Canada started a project to produce L.E.       D.lighting systems for the developing world. These lights are powered by batteries that can be recharged with energy from the sun.The batteries can also be charged through other ways, such as wind power and water power.
Professor David Irvine-Halliday tells the story of how he got the idea.In 1997, while climbing in the Annapurna mountains in Nepal, he saw a small school. All the children were outside. He looked through a window and saw that inside the school was dark. The school had a sign that read: "We have no teachers. If you want to stay and teach for a few days, we would be very pleased." Professor Irvine-Halliday says that experience had a big effect on him.Back at the University of Calgary, he was on the Internet one day.He saw a company in Japan selling bright white L.E.                           D.’s.So he built a light with some. This is how he began the Light Up the World Foundation.
48.Compared with traditional kinds of light bulbs, L.E.D.’S________.
A.waste a lot of energy                    B.need shorter time to make
C.shine much brighter                 D.a(chǎn)re warmer to touch
49.According to the passage, we know that L.E.D.’s________.
A.will replace all the lights            B.will be more and more popular
C.will be only colored ones               D.will be only used in developing countries
50.According to the passage, we can infer that the purpose of the Light Up the World Foundation is to________.
A.develop L.E.D.lighting system for the developing world
B.sell bright white L.E.D.’s
C.collect money for developing countries
D.earn money by selling L.E.D.’s

The quality of drinking water in Shanghai will meet European Union standard by 2010 and, a decade later, citizens in Shanghai will drink the best water in the world.
These were the goals set out by the Shanghai Water Authority. With the city’s population expected to increase only slightly and the economy to boom by 2020, Chen Yin, and official with the water authority, said Shanghai’s water consumption will not increase from its present amount.
Zhang Yue, director of the Urban Construction Division under the Ministry of Construction, said, “Shanghai is the first city in the country to publicize these ambitions. They will not be easy to achieve.”
He said water saving will help keep the sustainable development of China’s economy.
Saving one cubic meter of water means saving the city’s infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施)costs by 10,000 Yuan. Last year, Shanghai saved 300 million cubic meters of water either from readjustment of industrial structure or the employment of new technology.
“The aim is to arouse public awareness of the seriousness of water shortages,” Chen said. “The abundant surface water and amount of rain of the city are so misleading that they result in improper use of water.”
Shanghai lacks drinkable water. The Huangpu River, which supplies 80 percent of the city’s drinkable water, is nearing exhaustion.
The city, therefore, has been exploring new sources from the Yangtze River and growing forests along it to conserve quality water.
Besides penning regulations, the authority is popularizing technology among the public to efficiently cut the amount of water used.
At present, the city has 600,000 family toilets, each using 13 liters of water per flush. These are to be renovated(整修)to use only 9 liters of water per flush.
The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households – at a cost of 40 Yuan each.
In three years, all the toilets will be renovated, which saves the city nearly 15 million Yuan every year in water conservation.
Another task the city is engaged in is the treatment of sewage(污水)to improve the water environment.
At present the city can only treat 44 percent of its daily 5.04 million tons of waste water. To meet the total demand, 27 more sewage treatment factories are to be established with an estimated investment of 18 billion Yuan.
41.People in Shanghai get their daily water mainly from _______now.

C.the Yangtze River                         D.the Huangpu River
42.According to the passage, some people have the wrong opinion of using water
because      .
A.the renovating of family toilets will save plenty of water
B.a(chǎn)bout half of waste water has been treated already
C.a(chǎn)dvanced technology makes people use water as much as possible
D.there is plenty surface water and large amount of rain at present
43.The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households to          .
A.make people’s living more convenient
B.improve people’s living standards
C.ease employment pressure
D.meet the total demand of water
44.Which group of measures are all mentioned in the passage to save water?
a.improve drinking water quality
b.change some industrial structure
c.introduce or use some new technology
d.speed the economic development of Shanghai

Beyond two or three days, the world’s best weather forecasts are doubtful, and beyond six or seven they are worthless.
The Butterfly Effect is the reason. For small pieces of weather—to a global forecaster, small can mean thunder—storms and blizzards(暴風(fēng)雪)—any prediction becomes worse rapidly. Errors and uncertainties increase, from dust devils and storms up to continent-size eddies(旋渦)that only satellites can see.
The modern weather models work with net-like points sixty miles apart, and even so,some starting data have to be guessed, since ground stations and satellites cannot see everywhere. But suppose the earth could be covered with sensors placed one foot apart, rising at one-foot intervals all the way to the top of the atmosphere. Suppose every sensor gives perfectly accurate readings of temperature, pressure, humidity(溫度), and any other data a weatherman would want. Exactly at noon a powerful computer takes all the data and calculates what will happen at each point at 12.01, then 12.02,then 12.03…the computer will still be unable to predict whether Princeton will have sun or rain one month away. At noon the spaces between the sensors will hide fluctuations(波動(dòng))that the computer will not know about. By 12.01,those fluctuations will already have created small errors one foot away. Soon the errors will have added to the ten-foot scale, and so on up to the size of the globe.
63.A weather forecast ____________ in the world.
A.is reliable within one or two days
B.is doubtful beyond 24 hours
C.becomes useless beyond two or three days
D.is still worthwhile in seven days
64.Usually there is a weather sub-station____________.
A.in every city B.every 60 miles
C.between two cities D.every one foot
65.Which of the following statements is true?
A.People have not placed sensors one foot apart in the atmosphere.
B.Scientists have already put sensors one foot apart in the world.
C.Every sensor gives perfectly accurate data a weatherman wants.
D.Ground weather stations and satellites can see every place on earth.
66.Our computer will not be able to know about fluctuations because ____________.
A.the sensors are not good enough
B.they are hidden by the spaces between the sensors
C.they are too far away
D.they move very fast

Last week Jay McCarroll and The HSUS(The Humane Society of the United States)  made a bold fur-free statement on the runway, marking a new chapter for the fashion industry and animal protection. The encouraging response to McCarroll’s show confirmed that change is happening in fashion.
McCarroll has good reasons for rejecting fur. Each year, tens of millions of animals, including dogs and cats, needlessly suffer and die to fuel the fur industry. But what did Jay McCarroll use in place of fur? “I have patchwork pieces that contain all sorts of combinations of fabrics. The rest is cotton, nylon, polyester . . . you name it. I even have some stuff made out of bamboo/cotton blend. Anything but fur and leather, ”he told Fashion Wire Daily.
“So many people want to protect animals and live their lives without causing unnecessary cruelty. More than two thirds of Americans have pets, and we share a bond with animals every day. Saying no to fur can help millions of animals, and we want to show our respect to leading designers like Jay who embrace compassion as the fashion, ”said Michael Markarian, executive vice president of The HSUS. “It is great to see leaders in the fashion industry recognizing that the animals need their fur more than we do.”

Food sometimes gets poisoned with harmful things. A person who eats such food can get an illness called food poisoning. Food poisoning is usually not serious, but some types are deadly. The symptoms of food poisoning usually begin within hours of eating the poisoned food. Fever is one of the most common symptoms.
Certain microorganisms(微生物)cause most types of food poisoning. Bacteria and other microorganisms can poison eggs, meat, vegetables, and many other foods. After entering the body, these tiny living things release(釋放)poisons that make people sick.
Some chemicals can also cause food poisoning. They are often added to food while it is being grown, processed, or prepared. For example, many farmers spray chemicals on crops to kill weeds and insects. Some people may have a bad reaction to those chemicals when they eat the crops.
Some plants and animals contain natural poisons that are harmful to people. These include certain kinds of seafood, grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and mushrooms.
When people handle food properly, the risk of food poisoning is very small. Microorganisms multiply rapidly in dirty places and in warm temperatures. This means that people should never touch food with dirty hands or put food on unwashed surfaces. Food should be kept in a refrigerator to stop microorganisms from growing. Meat needs to be cooked thoroughly to kill any dangerous microorganisms. People should also wash food covered with chemicals before eating it. Finally, people should not eat wild mushrooms or other foods that grow in the wild. Some of these foods may contain natural materials that are poisonous to humans. In addition, some types of fish can be poisonous.
Most people recover from food poisoning after a few days of resting and drinking extra water. If people eat natural poisons, they must go to the hospital right away to have their stomachs emptied.
67. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Food when poisoned can make people sick.
B. Food poisoning means death.
C. Food poisoning comes in varieties.
D. Food poisoning can be serious.
68. Food poisoning can be caused by all the following EXCEPT ________.
A. some chemicals            B. low temperatures
C. some tiny living things      D. certain natural materials
69. From Paragraph 5,we can learn that ______________.
A. mushrooms should not be eaten
B. vegetables are safer than meat and seafood
  C. natural poisons are more dangerous than chemicals
  D. different types of food should be handled differently
70. It can be inferred from the passage that____________ .
  A. natural materials are safe in food processing
  B. chemicals are needed in food processing
  C. food poisoning can be kept under control
  D. food poisoning is out of control

A robot is a computer-controlled machine that is programmed to move and handle objects. Robots are able to perform repetitive tasks more quickly, cheaply, and accurately (精確的) than humans. In 1995, about 700,000 robots were used-including over 500,000 in Japan, about 120,000 in Western Europe, and about 60,000 in the United States-all in the industrialized world. Many robots applications are designed for tasks that are either dangerous or unpleasant for human beings. Now, robotic technology can be used in more and more fields. Experts say in the future robots will be able to make new highways, constructsteel frameworks of buildings, clean sewage (污水系統(tǒng)), and such physical work. Besides, another possibility is the development of robotic technology in medical surgery operations.
Perhaps the greatest changes in future robots will improve from their increasing ability to reason. The field of artificial intelligence is moving rapidly from university labs to practical application in industry, and machines of a new kind of robots are being developed, which can perform something involved in the process of understanding and planning, such as the management of a battlefield. Even the control of a large factory will be performed by intelligent computers. And there might be a possibility that these computers can design and make robots of their own.
Is there anything dangerous involved in this artificial intelligence progress then? Robot technology has been making people nervous ever since it was invented. Is it unreasonable to worry that robots will someday become too clever? Is it impossible that these human-like robots will start to think and plan for themselves? Will robots take over the world and force humans to give them energy to survive?
