Shopping is not as simple as you may think! There are all sorts of tricks at play each time we reach out for that particular brand of product on the shelf.
Colouring, for example, varies according to what the producers are trying to sell. Health foods are packaged in greens, yellows or browns because we think of these as healthy colours. Ice cream packets are often blue and expensive goods, like chocolates, are gold or silver.
When some kind of pain killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colours turned the customers off because they made the product look weak and ineffective. Eventually, it came on the market in a dark blue and white package—blue because we think of it as safe, and white as calm.
The size of a product can attract a shopper. But quite often a bottle doesn’t contain as much as it appears to.
It is believed that the better-known companies spend, on average, 70 percent of the total cost of the product itself on packaging!
The most successful producers know that it’s not enough to have a good product. The founder of Pears soap, who for 25 years has used pretty little girls to promote (推銷(xiāo)) their goods, came to the conclusion: “Any fool can make soap, but it takes a genius to sell it.”

What weighs 3500 pounds(1600kg)and lived 60 million years ago?Are you thinking of
dinosaurs?Guess again! You don,t have to go to a museum to see these creatures. They are alive
and swimming in the warm coastal waters of Florida.
Manatees(海牛)have lived a peaceful existence in the warm waters of Florida for 60
million years. However, they are now an endangered species. This means that if humans don,t do
something to save them, they will soon go the way of dinosaurs.
Humans have made life very difficult for manatees. One big danger that humans have
introduced is the speedboat.Because manatees are mammals.they need to come to the surface to breathe about every 5 to 6 minutes. This means that they are in constant danger of being caught in the propellers(螺旋槳)of speedboats. And boating aceidents are the greatest cause of death for them.
Manatees are in extra danger when they are in their sleeping or“torpor”state. They still
have to come to the surface for the air,but sometimes they are too sleepy to avoid the danger of approaching boats.
Another danger for manatees is the pollution that humans produce.Due to human pollution,
a deadly plant called red tide had increased greatly in the Gulf of Mexico. The plant,or algae,
t11riVes(繁茂)on pollution. It wiped out nearly 20 percent of the total manatee population on
earth.
Humans can help to save manatees。The government has established boating speed limits to
give the manatees.a(chǎn) chance to escape approaching speedlsoats.Everyone can help by cutting
down on waste and pollution to protect the waters for the manatees.
One famous singer,Jimmy Buffet, has helped save the manatees. He co-founded the Save the Manatee Club(SMC).SMC had begun an adoption(收養(yǎng))program for the manatees. For a fee, sponsors(資助者)can name a manatee.Donations are used to help protect the manatees and their habitat.
45.The manatee is the kind of animal that___________.
A.1ikes living in the cold waters of Florida B.will die out if not protected in time
C.call dive in the deep sea for hours D.is the biggest living animal on earth
46.Why is it dangerous for manatees to be in a torpor state?
A.Because they come to the snlface to breathe, and that is when they are hunted.
B.Because they eat deadly algae, and this makes them too sick to avoid danger.
C.Because they live in groups and therefore they are easily hurt by passing boats.
D.Because they are sleepy when they surface,so they can,t avoid approaching boats.
47.The death of the manatees is largely due to__________.
A.human hunting B.human pollution
C.speedboat accidents D.deadly plants
48.To help protect manatees,people should_________.
A.never go speed boating in their living habitat
B.keep the waters of Florida free from pollution
C.have manatess named by sponsors without a fee
D.wake manatees up from their torpor state

Hawking has left much for Chinese to think about.
British physicist Stephen hawking, possible the world’s most famous scientist after Albert Einstein, gave lectures in Zhejiang and Beijing in August.
An illness left him unable to move any part of his body except for three fingers. But his continuing efforts in the field of science have made many young people take him as their idol(偶像).
His books, such as A Brief History of Time, become bestsellers in Chinese bookstores. “Hawking helps people enlarge their horizons and become interested in science,” said Pan Yunhe, president of Zhejiang University.
Indeed, experts don’t think it likely that Hawking’ s lectures and profound(深?yuàn)W的) ideas will be easily understood by the average person. But he has certainly sowed the seeds of science among many young people.
And the “Hawking fever” caused by his visit has made people ask: How can China produce more top scientists like Hawking?
“Nurturing(培養(yǎng))top scientists will take as much work to change society as to educate the scientists themselves,” said Zhang Fan. Zhang has studied in the UK since 1999 and will be a second – year student at Trinity College in October.
In Britain, Zhang said, teachers inspire students to have a general understanding of the subjects they are interested in. And they encourage students to develop new ideas, which helps them to nurture their creativity.
In China, the Department of Education has encouraged schools to provide quality education to develop students’ potential(潛力).
“I hope teachers will pay more attention to helping us use our imaginations and solve problems on our own,” said Lu Jie, a Junior Three student in Sanfan Middle School in Beijing.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
55. Which of the following is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?

57. What do you know from the passage?
A. Not all the children respect their parents.
B. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.
C. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.
D. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.
58. On Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, _________.
A. people usually have family parties

There is probably no field of human activity in which our values and lifestyles are shown more clearly and strongly than they are in the clothes that we choose to wear. The dress of an individual is a kind of "sign language" that communicates a set of information and is usually the basis on which immediate impressions are formed. Traditionally, a concern for clothes was considered to be an affair of females, while men took pride in the fact they were completely lacking in clothes consciousness(意識(shí)).
This type of American culture is by degrees changing as man dress takes on greater variety and color. Even as early as 1995, a researcher in Michigan said that men attached rather high importance to the value of clothing in daily life. White-collar workers in particular viewed dress as a symbol of ability, which could be used to impress or influence others, especially in the work situation. The white-collar worker was described as extremely concerned about the impression his clothes made on his superiors(上司). Although blue-collar workers were less aware that they might be judged on the basis of their clothing, they recognized that any difference from the accepted pattern of dress would be made fun of by fellow workers.
Since that time, of course, the patterns have changed; the typical office worker may now be wearing the blue shirt, and the laborer a white shirt, but the importance of dress has not become less. Other researchers in recent years have helped to prove its importance in the lives of individuals at various levels and in different social and economic status groups(階層).
68.From the passage we know that______.
A.the Americans' values and lifestyles can't be shown clearly in their activity
B.the Americans' values and lifestyles are from the sign language
C.the clothes the Americans choose to wear have something to do with their values and lifestyles
D.the clothes the Americans choose to wear depend on a set of information

A.men should care much for clothes
B.women should concern greatly about what they wore but men shouldn't
C.both men and women must pay great attention to their clothes
D.neither men nor women didn't have to show interest in clothes
70.Blue-collar workers pay attention to their clothes because______.
A.they extremely concern about the impression their clothes make on their superiors
B.they know clearly that people will judge them on the basis of their clothing
C.they want to impress and influence others
D.they don't want to be laughed at
71.The passage mainly suggests that______.
A.the Americans pay great attention to the importance of clothes
B.now men in America have made more progress in clothes consciousness
C.now men in America care about clothes more than women do
D.the American culture is greatly changing

Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia they had to find a way past South America. The man who finally found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan (麥哲倫). Magellan sailed from Seville in August, 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the cold winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan Strait(海峽). In November, 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America. They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines (菲律賓), men were dying of starvation (饑餓). Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates,as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional,or psychological, and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can,for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware,at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents’ and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find flaws(缺陷)in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters’ performances. Positive reinforcement(正面強(qiáng)化)should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
72.An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is ____________.
A.to make sports less competitive
B.to make sports more challenging
C.to reduce their mental stress
D.to increase their sense of success
73.According to the passage sport is positive for young people in that____________.
A.it can help them learn more about society
B.it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves
C.it enables them to find flaws in themselves
D.it can provide them with valuable experience
74.Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes ________.
A.without realizing criticism may destroy their self-confidence
B.in order to make them remember life lessons
C.believing that criticism is beneficial for their early development
D.so as to put more pressure on them
75.The author’s purpose in writing the passage is ____________.
A.to persuade athletes not to worry about criticism
B.to emphasize the importance of positive reinforcement to young athletes
C.to discuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragement
D.to teach young athletes how to avoid burnout

The next great land area that man hopes to control is the moon. In size it is nearly equal to the area of North and South America. However, it presents a hostile (不友好的) environment. Temperatures range +120 to -150 degrees Centigrade (攝氏). There is no air, and no water.
Today there is considerable scientific speculation (思索) about living on the moon. When man will begin life on the moon surface is still not determined. But experts believe that settlement will take place in three steps. First, there will be increasing periods of exploration with temporary shelters (臨時(shí)住所). These periods will be followed by longer stays with housing under the surface of the moon and daily necessities brought by the settlers themselves from the earth. Finally, settlements that are self-supporting will be founded.
The main job of the early settlers will be to stay alive. They will have to plant crops under huge domes (圓頂屋) to produce food and oxygen and find water sources. After this is done, the settlers will have time to explore the possibilities of commercial (商業(yè)的) development and to make discoveries important to science. The characteristics of the moon that make it bad for human staying alive may make it ideal for certain kinds of manufacturing (制造業(yè)). Operations requiring a vacuum (真空) or extreme cold are examples. Therefore, industrial diamonds might be produced on the moon.
64. The area of the moon is _________.
A. about the same as that of North and South America
B. larger than that of North and South America
C. hardly equal to that of North and South America
D. far smaller than that of North and South America
65. According to this passage, the settlement of the moon ________.
A.will soon be realized
B.can be done under the moon surface
C.is being experimented by many scientists
D. sounds entirely impossible
66. To stay alive on the moon, the early settlers must first of all be able to ________.
A. develop commerce
B. get enough food, oxygen and water
C. make discoveries important
D. explore the possibilities of industrial development
67. Though the environment on the moon is bad for human staying alive, it is very good for ________.
A. making such things as industrial diamonds
B. all kinds of manufactured goods
C. medical operations
D. commercial development

To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no teachers, only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day… they will lose all taste of learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will find children talking, reading, painting, cooking, working on computers, studying French, playing the piano, climbing trees, or just running around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!
The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget (預(yù)算,經(jīng)費(fèi)), and even which staff they want and do not want anymore.
When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.
56. What is the main idea of the article?
A. An unusual school. B. Children’s hobbies.
C. A school without teachers D. Education in the US.
57. What does the school believe?
A. Teachers cannot teach children well.
B. Children learn best when they do what they want to do.
C. Learning is for adults—children should only play.
D. Children should only learn about one thing at a time.
58 What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds?
A. They love learning.
B. They are very naughty.
C. They want to be outside all the time.
D. They are too young to learn anything.
59. Who has the most power in the school meeting?
A. The older children have more power than the younger children.
B.A child has more power than an adult.
C. The younger children have more power than the older children.
D. Everybody has equal power.
