In the United States, teaching is very important. If teachers do not teach well, students complain. If many students do not understand, people think that the teacher does not do a good job. The teacher has big responsibility to make sure students understand. In a sense, students are consumers and the teacher is offering services.
Students have the right to evaluate their teachers, and they usually do so at the end of each course. That evaluation includes lots of aspects of teaching, such as explanation, preparation, using good examples, answering questions, and organization of classes.
Students are supposed to read required textbooks and recommended books before classes. Without reading them, they will find it very difficult to understand the class. Basic courses on doing research and writing papers are taught at the beginning of the program. They teach things very concretely(具體地) and clearly. Students are expected to apply what they have learned to their studies.
Classes are usually divided into lectures and seminars. There are some lecture classes, where the teacher just gives a lecture, and students ask questions at the end. Most graduate level classes are lectures and discussions. Participating in discussions is very important. Higher level classes involve very little lecturing. They emphasize discussion and presentation by the students.
1According to the passage, good teachers should ___________.
A.try to please their students
B.treat their students as consumers
C.understand their students well
D.made sure their students understand
2What are students expected to do before attending a class?
A.Go over the lessons thoroughly.
B.Understand the textbooks well.
C.Do the reading assignments.

A.learn how to do research and write papers.
B.have some learning experience
C.learn about the course concretely and clearly
D.know how to participate in discussions.
4Higher level classes are taught mainly through ________
A.giving a lot of lectures to students
B.involving students in discussions
C.a(chǎn)sking students questions in class
D.a(chǎn)nswering students’ questions in class

第三部分閱讀理解(共15小題;每小題2分,共30分)
(A)
It is easier to start to learn a new language than to become good at it. I’ve started to learn many new languages, such as French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Afrikaans (南非荷蘭語), and so on. I can’t speak them yet, but I’ve started picking up a few words and phrases that help me when I’m visiting. Most importantly, I’ve had fun doing this.
I’ve started to learn Italian, but I haven’t learned any Italian grammar, and when I visit Italy I’m not able to speak Italian correctly. My aim is just to communicate at a very basic level when I visit a country, to make an effort, and to show appreciation of the language and culture. I’m not trying to talk about politics or explain my views on life. I pick key or useful words and phrases that I want to learn. For example, as a visitor to another country, the key words in a foreign language are the words which will be of the most use to you and which you will use most often. These key words and phrases will vary from visitor to visitor, depending on the purpose of their trip.
It is worth remembering that it is easier to start a task than to finish it, and the same goes for learning a new language. The better you are at it, the slower your rate of progress will be, as you have to learn grammar, words and so on. If you are only trying to learn a few foreign words and phrases, you will make faster progress, have more fun, and won’t have to spend too much time on any given language.
61. From the second paragraph, we can infer that ______.
A. the writer is good at Italian, although it is rather difficult
B. the writer doesn’t like learning Italian because it is no fun
C. discussing politics or explaining one’s view requires an advanced language level
D. it is great fun to communicate with the local people in another country
62. Which of the following does the writer prefer to learn?
A. Sentence structure.        B. Important words and phrases.
C. Complicated sentences.        D. Grammar.
63. You can make faster progress ______.
A. if your language level is advanced  B. if you only try to learn some basic words
C. once you speak the language well
D. once you have mastered several other languages
64. Which of the following would be the best title of this passage?
A. Starting Learning a New Language Is Easier than Becoming Good at It
B. How to Visit a Foreign Country
C. The Importance of Learning a Foreign Language
D. Why You Should Learn Several Foreign Languages

A vegetarian(素食者)diet may help to protect people against cancer, a UK study suggests. Analysis of data from 52,700 man and women shows that those who did not eat meat had significantly fewer cancers than those who did.
Published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the findings were worth looking into .Although it is widely recommended that people eat some fruits and vegetables every day to reduce their risk of cancer and other diseases, there is very little evidence showing that a vegetarian diet can surely reduce cancers .
But surprisingly, the researchers also found a higher rate of colorectal(直腸的)cancer – a disease connected with eating red meat – among the vegetarians.
Study leader Professor Tim Key, a researcher at the University of Oxford, said no previous study had looked at the diet in this way and that there had been a lot of confusion about the issue.
“It’s interesting – it suggests there might be some reduction in cancers in vegetarians, but we need to look carefully at that”, said the professor.
More work is needed to show the connections between diet and cancer but such studies are very hard to do. Dr Joanne Lunn, a senior nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, said the findings highlighted the fact that cancer is a complex disease and many different lifestyle factors play a part in determining a person’s risk.
73. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Reasons for getting cancers.
B. Vegetarians get fewer cancers.
C. Tips on avoiding cancers.
D. A surprising discovery on colorectal cancer.
74. Why are the findings worth looking into?
A. They can encourage healthy eating.
B. They show that cancer is a complex disease.
C. they show a brand new discovery.
D. They have been published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
75. We can learn from the passage that _________.
A. people eating red meat are unlikely to get colorectal cancer
B. the diet is one of the many factors that determine a person’s health
C. the connections between a vegetarian diet and cancer are clear through the research
D. scientists will soon figure out the relationship between the diet and cancer

Many Chinese high school students are tired of their parents’ nagging(嘮叨). They think their parents’ high expectations are burdens (負(fù)擔(dān)). But a recent survey found that they are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US, who also find their parents annoying . The parents of foreign teens have even higher expectations of their children than Chinese parents. 62% of Chinese fathers and 66%of Chinese mothers have high expectations of their children at high school age. They rank third and fourth among fathers and mothers of four countries. Japanese mothers top the list with 76% having high expectations, while 70% of Korean fathers expect too much of their children. Japanese teens are the most deeply troubled by their parents constantly (總是) comparing them with other kids.
The survey also found that Chinese students are the most satisfied with their parents. They blame them less, and also receive less criticism than those from the other three countries . However ,satisfaction doesn’t mean they are happy. Of the four countries, Chinese children are not the happiest at home. They get the least praise from their parents and they don’t feel able to express their unhappiness to them,
“Results from the survey show that in spite of different cultural backgrounds, generation gaps (代溝)exist in many countries other than China. It’s even bigger elsewhere,” said Sun Yunsxiao, from the China Yonth and Children Research Centre. He said that Chinese parents are used to burying their feelings deep in their hearts, which makes their children not want to talk openly with them. “ This survey shows that both parents and teenagers in China need to work on communicating and understanding each other. ”
Besides their family life, students were also questioned about their opinions on themselves and others in the world. US students showed more “individuality,” with 88% agreeing that “people should follow their own interests instead of those of others”. Koreans were the next most independent, followed by the Chinese and Japanese.

The United States covers a large part of the North American continent. Its neighbors are Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. Although the United States is a big country, it is not the largest in the world. In 1964, its population was over 185,000,000.
When this land first became a nation, after winning its independence (獨(dú)立) from England, it had thirteen states. Each of the states was represented(代表) on the American flag by a star. All these states were in the eastern part of the continent. As the nation grew toward the west, new states were added and new stars appeared on the flag. For a long time, there were 48 stars. In 1959, however, two more stars were added to the flag, representing the new states of Alaska and Hawaii.
Indians were the first people of the land which is now the United States. There are still
many thousands of Indians now living in all parts of the country. Sometimes it is said that the Indians are "the only real Americans". Most Americans come from all over the world. Those who came first in greatest numbers to make their homes on the eastern coast of North America were mostly from England. It is for that reason that the language of the United States is English and that its culture and customs are more like those of England than those of any other country in the world.

Messages can be sent across the land by means of the electric telegraph; but you cannot put up a line of telegraph posts across the sea. Messages can be sent across the
ocean by radio or by cable(電纜). The cable lies on the sea bottom and it has to have very good insulation. If any part of it is weak, the water will get through and stop all signals .
The first cable under the sea was between England and France. It was laid(放置) in 1851. In 1851 engineers tried to lay a cable across the Atlantic Ocean, but they met a
lot of difficulties. Halfway across the Atlantic the cable broke, and the ship that was laying it had to return.
Kelvin advised that another cable ought to be laid. It was made ready, and put on board a big ship. Kelvin and his friends traveled with it and after many days of hard work, they reached America without breaking the cable. Kelvin himself sent the first
message by cable from America to Britain. Unfortunately only 732 messages were sent through this cable before it broke.
The next cable was laid in 1866, and this time there were no problems. The ship
that laid it was the Great Eastern, one of the strongest ships that have ever been built.
It was driven by powerful engines and also by sails .

The Romans built great "aqueducts" to carry fresh water from the mountains to the cities. Many of these aqueducts are still standing today. The Romans also built great pipes under the ground to carry away the sewage. In Rome, one of these sewage pipes (sewers) is still used today; it is 2,000 years old. The Roman Emperors even set up a government health service. They built the first great public hospitals in Europe, and they paid doctors to look after poor people.
Then the Roman Empire fell to pieces, these civilized methods of treatment disappeared from most of Europe, for more than a thousand years. People went back to the old ways. But the work of the Greek and Roman doctors was not lost. Over a thousand years
ago, they Arabs moved into many of the Mediterranean countries. They took big parts of the old Roman lands. They translated the Greek and Roman medical books into Arabic. Arab doctors themselves make many new discoveries.
