It is easier to start to learn a new language than to become good at it. I’ve started to learn many new languages, such as French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Afrikaans (南非荷蘭語), and so on. If you are only trying to learn a few foreign words and phrases, you will make faster progress, have more fun, and won’t have to spend too much time on any given language.

  A vegetarian（素食者）diet may help to protect people against cancer, a UK study suggests. Analysis of data from 52,700 man and women shows that those who did not eat meat had significantly fewer cancers than those who did.
Published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the findings were worth looking into .Although it is widely recommended that people eat some fruits and vegetables every day to reduce their risk of cancer and other diseases, there is very little evidence showing that a vegetarian diet can surely reduce cancers .
But surprisingly, the researchers also found a higher rate of colorectal（直腸的）cancer – a disease connected with eating red meat – among the vegetarians.
Study leader Professor Tim Key, a researcher at the University of Oxford, said no previous study had looked at the diet in this way and that there had been a lot of confusion about the issue.
“It’s interesting – it suggests there might be some reduction in cancers in vegetarians, but we need to look carefully at that”, said the professor.
More work is needed to show the connections between diet and cancer but such studies are very hard to do. Dr Joanne Lunn, a senior nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, said the findings highlighted the fact that cancer is a complex disease and many different lifestyle factors play a part in determining a person’s risk.

Many Chinese high school students are tired of their parents’ nagging（嘮叨）. They think their parents’ high expectations are burdens (負(fù)擔(dān)). But a recent survey found that they are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US, who also find their parents annoying . The parents of foreign teens have even higher expectations of their children than Chinese parents. 62% of Chinese fathers and 66%of Chinese mothers have high expectations of their children at high school age. They rank third and fourth among fathers and mothers of four countries. Japanese mothers top the list with 76% having high expectations, while 70% of Korean fathers expect too much of their children. Japanese teens are the most deeply troubled by their parents constantly (總是) comparing them with other kids.
The survey also found that Chinese students are the most satisfied with their parents. They blame them less, and also receive less criticism than those from the other three countries . However ,satisfaction doesn’t mean they are happy. Of the four countries, Chinese children are not the happiest at home. The United States covers a large part of the North American continent. Its neighbors are Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. Although the United States is a big country, it is not the largest in the world. In 1964, its population was over 185,000,000.

Messages can be sent across the land by means of the electric telegraph; but you cannot put up a line of telegraph posts across the sea. Messages can be sent across the
ocean by radio or by cable(電纜). The cable lies on the sea bottom and it has to have very good insulation. If any part of it is weak, the water will get through and stop all signals .
The first cable under the sea was between England and France. It was laid（放置） in 1851. In 1851 engineers tried to lay a cable across the Atlantic Ocean, but they met a

The Romans built great "aqueducts" to carry fresh water from the mountains to the cities. Many of these aqueducts are still standing today. The Romans also built great pipes under the ground to carry away the sewage. In Rome, one of these sewage pipes (sewers) is still used today; it is 2,000 years old. The Roman Emperors even set up a government health service. They built the first great public hospitals in Europe, and they paid doctors to look after poor people.                    
Then the Roman Empire fell to pieces, these civilized methods of treatment disappeared from most of Europe, for more than a thousand years. People went back to the old ways. They lived in dirty conditions which helped to cause diseases（疾病）; and they asked God to cure the disease. They shut mentally sick people in prisons.
