The birthrate in Europe has been in a steady decrease since the 1960s. European countries, realizing crisis is at hand, are providing great encouragement for parents to create more babies in the 2lst century.
Affairs Ministry concluded last year that, 1 cash encouragement, some women just don’t want to be 2 holding the baby. “What we know is that it’s good for the 3 if men and women share the burden of having children, says Soren Kindlund, family policy adviser at the Swedish ministry. 4 Swedish parents can take their paid leave as they wish, men use a mere 12% of it; 60% of fathers do not take even a(n)5 day off work.
Experts fear that the tendency for women to use most of the parental leave could make employers6 to give young women the permanent jobs they need to qualify for paid maternity leave(產(chǎn)假). In January, Sweden decided to allow new fathers two months paid leave, with a warning: use it or7 it.
Kindlund admits that men are under 8 to stay at work, even though parental pay comes out of the public purse. “It’s not popular among bosses and perhaps with other men in the workplace,. “But it’s good for the father and for the child if they can 9 a relationship. ”
In Norway, a(n)10 policy has worked wonders. 70% of dads in Norway now take parental leave, and the birthrate of 1. 85 children per woman is one of the highest in Europe.

Don’t Take the Fun Out of Youth Sports
When I joined a private football league a few years ago, the sport meant everything to me. My coach(教練) said that I had lots of potential(潛力), and I became captain of my 1. That was before all the fun was taken out of 2.
At first, everyone on the team got 3 playing time. Then the team moved up to the top division after winning all its games, and the 4 started. Some parents, who had paid the coach extra so their daughters could have 5one-on-one training, got angry when she didn’t give them more playing time in our 6. The coach was replaced.
The new coach, however, took all the fun out of the game. All we did during practice was 7. I always wished to God that it would rain so we would not have the 8. Of course, all teams run drills; they are 9. But we ran so much that, afterwards, we had trouble 10. Younger people shouldn’t be doing exercises 11 for 18-year-olds.
I was very thin 12 I started football, but as a member of this team I wouldn’t eat much, because I was afraid of being too 13 to run. I feared making mistakes, and the added pressure caused me to make more than my usual 14.
Is all this pressure necessary? I 15 up leaving the football team. Four other girls did the same, and two of them stopped playing football completely. That’s 16, because they had so much potential. They were just burned-out with all the pressure they 17 from the coach or their parents.
I continued playing football at school and 18 my love for it. I joined a private team coached by my school coach. When I started playing 19 him, he told me I needed to relax because I looked nervous. After I 20 down, I played better. When you enjoy something, it’s a lot easier to do it well.

About two years ago while working downtown at our company’s headquarters I met a man. I’11 call him “Martin”. Martin was a short, middle-aged man with a glandular(內(nèi)分泌) problem. He was fat, using a walking stick to help, and was painfully shy. Almost every morning I saw Martin on the elevator. We were usually the only people there, so I made 1conversation as we 2 to the 15th floor. I chatted with him about sometimes weather and sometimes about each other’s weekend.
About six months 3our daily elevator chats, Martin came to my office and asked if I had a minute to chat. Though we worked on the same floor, I’m sure he had to 4to find me. I invited him to sit down. He said, “I wanted to come and say 5. The company has let me go. Today will be my last day.”
I didn’t know what to say. 6I was too familiar with saying goodbye to co-workers, it was never 7. Honestly, I usually avoid talking about the event because I felt 8and at a loss for words. I told him I was 9and asked if there was anything I could do. He said, “No, I’11 be fine, I just wanted to take the time to thank you.” I was now 10. He explained that our daily talks had 11a lot to him.
He thanked me not only for 12with him in the mornings, but for speaking directly to him and others on the elevator, and for telling him a quick joke in the crowded cafeteria. It seemed that 13had ever been his friend before—or if so they were 14to him in public.
He said he didn’t want to 15much of my time, as he knew I was busy and he needed to 16his personal things. He had tears in his eyes as he shook my hand and left.
I’ve never seen him since, but I imagine he’s doing well. Meeting him 17my life. Now when I’m in a hurry, or have a bad day, I try extra hard to speak 18to those around me. I remind myself that it’s just as easy to say something nice as to say something 19, and I’m awed (敬畏) at how 20our daily actions are.
