I went to India for a 2-week vacation to visit my relatives. We stopped on a red light, and as always, there were a lot of activities outside the cars near the      . People walked in, between the cars       newspaper, water and a number of kids looked for a bit of charity from the car owners. It’s a familiar      in most poor developing countries.
While we were     for the red light to turn green, I noticed a man outside a couple of      in front of ours trying to sell bottles of water. It’s       unusual at first. He was a man in his 40s with relatively      clothes. But he walked around in a strange way. He kind of      his way around the spaces. He was blind.
Carrying a couple of water bottles on one hand, he     got to the outside of our car. Out of       , my mum decided to buy one water bottle. As she gave the man the money, the light turned green. The car behind sounded loudly and     , trying to get ahead of traffic. Seeing this, my mum kindly told the man to      the change. However, with his       sense of touch, he quickly went through his shirt pocket and threw the money at my mum’s       . It was the exact change. The cars behind us were really getting out of control,     we decided to go on our way.
I broke down and even      when I got home. Here’s a blind man, born in       , trying to sell water bottles on the streets to make ends meet. He        our sympathy. Life hasn’t been       to him, yet he’s giving it his best shot. I think that is what        is all about facing life bravely.

Another person’s enthusiasm was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my stepmother.
I was nine years old when she entered our home in rural Virginia. My father  36  me to her with these words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is  37  for being the worst boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no  38  than tomorrow morning.”
My stepmother walked over to me,  39  my head slightly upward, and looked me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied, “ You are  40  . This is not the worst boy at all,    41  the smartest one who hasn’t yet found an outlet for his enthusiasm.”
That statement began a (n)  42  between us. No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbors had built me up in my  43  as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that.
She changed many things. She  44  my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the country seat, where my father’s career could be more  45  and my brothers and I could be better  46  .
When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand  47  and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, I  48  it, and I saw how it had already improved our lives. I accepted her  49  and began to write for local newspapers. I was doing the same kind of  50  that great day I went to interview Andrew Carnegie and received the task which became my life’s work later. I wasn’t the  51  beneficiary(受益者). My father became the  52  man in town. My brothers and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.
What power  53  has! When that power is released to support the certainty of one’s purpose and is  54  strengthened by faith, it becomes an irresistible force which poverty and temporary defeat can never  55  .
You can communicate that power to anyone who needs it. This is probably the greatest work you can do with your enthusiasm.

Historically, the term “fair trade” has meant many things. The Fair Trade League was  36   in Britain in 1881 to restrict  37  from foreign countries. In the United States, businesses and labor unions 38  “fair trade” laws to construct構(gòu)建what economist Joseph Stiglitz calls “barriers to imports.” These so called “anti-dumping(反傾銷)” laws allow a company that  39  a foreign one of selling a product below cost to request that the government charge收費(fèi)special taxes to protect it from “unfair”  40  .
Such dark protectionist thoughts are far from the  41  of the organizers of the United Kingdom’s annual “Fairtrade Fortnight”. Their  42   aim is to raise the price paid to developing-country farmers for their 43  by cutting out the inflated profits虛抬利潤of the middlemen on whom they  44  for getting their goods to distant markets. Fair-trade products  45  cocoa, coffee, tea, and bananas do not compete with domestic European production, and  46  do not have a protectionist motive(動機(jī)).
This is how it works: In  47  for being paid a guaranteed price and meeting “agreed labor and environmental standards” (minimum wages, no farm chemicals ), poor-country farming cooperatives(合作社) receive a FAIRTRADE mark for their products, given  48  by the FAIRTRADE Labeling Organization. This mark 49  supermarkets and other businesses to sell the products at a higher than  50   price . Third-world farmers get their income increased,  51  first-world consumers get to feel virtuous: a marriage made in heaven.
The fair-trade movement,  52  in the 1980’s, has been growing rapidly. In a significant breakthrough in 1997, the British House of Commons   53   to serve only fair-trade coffee. By the end of 2007, more than 600 producers’ organizations,   54  1.4 million farmers in 58 countries, were selling fair-trade products. Today, a quarter of all bananas in UK supermarkets are sold under a FAIRTRADE mark. But FAIRTRADE-labeled products still represent a very  55  share—typically less than 1%—of global sales of cocoa, tea, coffee, etc.
