The other day I was talking to a stranger on the bus; he told me that he had a good     in Chicago and he wondered if, by any chance, I    to know him. For a moment, I thought he might be   , but I could tell from the expression on his face that he was not. He was     . I felt that it was ridiculous (可笑的) to      that I could possibly have ever met with his friend out of millions of people in Chicago. But,     , I just smiled and reminded(提醒) him that Chicago was a very      city. He nodded, and I thought he was going to be glad to drop the topic and talk about something else. But I was wrong. He was silent for a few minutes, and then he       to tell me all about his friend.
His friend’s main       in life seemed to be tennis. He was an excellent tennis player, and he      had his own tennis court(網(wǎng)球場(chǎng)). There were a lot of people with swimming     , yet there were only two people with private (私人的)tennis court; his friend in Chicago was one of them. He       that maybe there were more private courts in the country than he     but he did not know of any others. Then he asked me    my brother lived in California. When I said Sacramento, he said that was a coincidence (巧合)    _ his Chicago friend also spent the summer in Sacramento last year and he lived next door to a      who had a tennis court in his backyard. I said I felt that really was a coincidence because my next-door neighbour had gone to Sacramento last summer and had     __ the house next to my brother’s house. For a moment, we stared at each other, but we did not say anything.
“Would your friend’s name happen to be Roland Kirkwood?” I asked finally. He      and said, “Yes. Would your brother’s name happen to be Dr Rey Hunter?” It was my       to laugh. “Yes,” I replied.

Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease(疾病) called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.
At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (細(xì)菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate — refined white rice (精煉米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (維生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.
Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills.

Galaxy saw a man and a woman who communicated with the sign language at the train station when she was on the way home one evening. She noticed that the woman asked the man for the direction. He told her that he did not know. Galaxy decided to help them. She had learned the sign language when she served as a volunteer in the deaf and mute (聾啞) school. Then she showed the woman the direction and left her email address to them in case they needed her help later.
She received an email from that man the next day. Kazrim was his name. Galaxy replied his mail sincerely. They both started chatting online soon after and began seeing each other. Although they only communicated with the sign language, it never bothered her.

On the first day of college our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know.
I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi, handsome! My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you can!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.
“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.”
“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. “I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We instantly became friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk non-stop.
I was always mesmerized(催眠) listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon(偶像) and she easily made friends wherever she went.
