US First Lady Michelle Obama, along with her mother and two daughters, made their first trip to China from March 20-26. They went to Beijing, Xi’an and Chengdu.
In a speech at Peking University, Mrs. Obama encouraged students to study abroad.
“It’s not enough to get good grades in school,” she said in the speech. “It is better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books. The experiences in other countries help make our life successful. By learning each other’s languages and by showing such curiosity (好奇) and respect for each other’s cultures, you are building bridges of understanding and bonds of friendship,” she said. The US is the top destination for Chinese students. More than 200,000 Chinese students are now studying in the US. In 2009, US President Barack Obama announced (宣布) his goal of sending 100,000 students to China. Since then, more than 68,000 US students have come to China. What’s more, many kids in the US are now studying Chinese. “Learning Chinese is a cool thing in school. The following are some tips for becoming a successful businessman by Michael Bloomberg. They are based on his experience of building a company from the ground up, leading New York City as mayor(市長), and so on.
Take Risks
Life is too short to spend your time avoiding failure.
In 1981, at the age of 39, I lost my job. The next day I took a big risk and began my own company. In 2001, when I was debating whether to run for mayor, most people advised me not to do it. But one person said, “If you can imagine yourself giving a concession(敗選)speech, then why not go for it?” That was the best advice I received, and I followed it.
In order to succeed, you must first be willing to fail, and you must have the courage to go for it anyway.
Make your own luck
Luck plays a part in success. The harder you work, the luckier you get.
Whatever you choose to do, even if it’s not the job of your dreams, always work hard at it. Be the first person at work in the morning and the last to leave at night. Hard work creates chances.
Never stop learning
The most powerful word in English language is “why”. There is nothing so powerful as an open, inquiring mind(探究精神). Whatever field you choose for starting a business - be a lifelong student.
Give back
You are responsible for your success and failure, but you only succeed if you share the reward with others.
My first donation was a $ 5 check to my alma mater(母校) . And while the checks(支票) may be bigger today, they come with the same spirit.
You don’t have to be wealthy to give back. You can give back by giving your time and talents.

Do you mind sharing your test scores with others?
On May 16, Guo Ruiting, 14, from Shenzhen Foreign Language School, had a big debate (辯論) with her classmates on this topic.
Guo believed that making the scores public would make students study harder. At first, she explained many theories (理論) that she had collected on the Internet. But they were too difficult to understand. So she was easily beaten by her opponent (對方) Du Xiaoshe.
“Publishing the results of our tests is bad for us,” said Du. He came to this conclusion (結(jié)論) after he failed his history exam one month ago. He thought it was just an accident. But he felt so hurt when his parents got a list of his marks. It also showed the marks of other students in his class.
His experience seemed to have won over many students. But Guo’s team didn’t give up.
“Don’t you forget the time when we all worked harder after knowing the average mark of Class 2?” asked Guo. “We’d have never been so good if we didn’t know how far we were behind. So it’s good to know others’ marks,” said Guo.
These words encouraged Du. He partly agreed with Guo’s team. He thought it was good to show the average mark of each class but not individual (個人的) marks. This is the perfect way to respect their privacy and make them work hard as well.
Such a conclusion won most of the students’ minds.
“Sometimes we need to compromise (折中), both in a debate and in our life,” added Du.
( ) 61. In the report, students debated _______. .
