英語20分鐘專題突破:閱讀理解1

A

Today, I read an interesting article about television viewing. In one experiment, families were paid to stop watching TV for either a week or a month. Many could not complete the task and some families even fought, verbally or physically. It was quite interesting and now I will say something about TV.

After TV became a product most families could afford, people bought and started to watch their new TVs. Both adults and children became less creative in problem so1ving,less able to  persevere(堅(jiān)持)at tasks, and less tolerant of unstructured time.

In my family, we grew up with the TV on. Every weekend, we watched Gun Smoke and Bonanza together as a fami1y. TV provides us with a comfortable background when we want to learn a foreign language at home, and it entertains us cheaply with live action sports, incomparable  performing arts and important events of the world. In addition,it educates us about everything     from the cells in our body to the galaxies in the universe.

Perhaps it’s not even practical to live without television unless our views change abruptly as we get older. I don’t think that TV damages us so much as it robs us of time that could be  spent doing other things such as 1earning new skills, getting some exercise or doing vo1unteer work.

I was lucky to have a family that watched TV together.Today there seems to be a TV in every room of the house and there's no need to agree on a program to watch. To watch TV or not to watch TV is more of a question for adults than for us, and even though we all say we want to cut down the time we spend in front of the tube,we never really do. TV has us hypnotized!

The very last topic any parent wants to discuss is cancer. In fact, wouldn't it be wonderful if the topic never had to be broached? Unfortunately, few among us haven't been touched,in  some way, by the disease.

One teacher at Howell’s,Land O’Pines School decided last year to make a learning experience out of cancer awareness, and with the help of his fellow teachers, has succeeded in taking a  terrible subject and turning it into something that allows the children to make a difference while helping others.

The Hats On Day project began a decade ago in Missouri when a fifth―grade class wanted  to raise money to help a fellow classmate battling cancer. The children wanted to raise awareness about the effects of chemotherapy(化療)and decided to wear hats to show their support for people who lose their hair while undergoing treatment for cancer.

During the 10 years since the first Hats On Day, the project has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for children with cancer. Raymond Gredder, a fifth―grade teacher at Land O’Pilies, heads up the program locally. As part of the project,Land O’Pines students are asked to bring in monetary donations this week that will be contributed to the Foundation for Children with Cancer.

This is the second year Land O’Pines is participating in the Hats On Day project. Last year the Student Council. organized the weeklong collection and raised more than $2,000. This year Gredder is running the program through the fifth grade health curriculum. He believes it is extremely important for children to be involved in events such as Hats On Day that promote an awareness and understanding of people in need.
