The journey two divers made some time ago to the deepest point on the earth makes us realize how much of the world still remains to be studied. The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small steel ball to find out if there are any ocean currents(水流) or signs of life.
It was necessary to set out early, so that the ball would come to the surface in daylight, and be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The divers began preparations early in the morning and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water.
The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layers (層) of water. In time the temperature dropped to the freezing point. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone telling how they felt. Then, at a depth of 3,000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hours later at 30,000 feet, the men were frightened by a loud, cracking noise. Even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily, though, it was only one of the outer windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of "dust" made up of small dead sea creatures. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the great water pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long, as the heat from them made the water boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint but clear voices of the divers were heard on the mother ship seven miles away. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up, arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none was worse for their experience.

67. As the divers went down to the ocean floor, the telephone .
A. kept working all the time
B. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again after they reached the bottom
C. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again at 30,000 feet
D. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again when they returned to the same depth

A. there was no life but some small dead sea creatures
B. fish were swimming as freely as they do near the surface
C. fish were not swimming freely in the dark water
D. fish were not swimming freely under the high water pressure
We bought a pair of geese one spring when they were both two weeks old. One was a female Chinese goose I named Su and her mate was a white goose I named Goose. They would follow us all around the yard talking to us whenever we came outside. At night, they stayed in a box in our kitchen until they were too big and then they stayed at night outside. They loved the river and soon began staying out all night on the river. Whenever I wanted to know where they were, I would make a honking noise (雁叫聲) , and they would answer me and come into the yard for their corn.
One night, I was woken up by loud noise. We ran out to see what was wrong. A raccoon(浣熊) had decided that some goose eggs would taste good and had come too close to the setting. When we found Su, the raccoon had caught her by her neck and was biting it.We drove it away and took Su to the garage, washed her wound and wrapped it up in a bandage.Goose knew she was there and wanted to be with her, so we opened the small garage door and he hurried in.After two days and nights, I released them back outside.
For the first three nights at dusk, we would get her and carry her into the garage for the night and Goose would come running behind us to join her there. We were touched by his devotion to her.We took off her bandage and she was fine so that next night, we had not planned to take her to the garage any longer. We were amazed, however, that when dusk fell that night, she climbed the back steps to our garage door waiting for us to come and get her in! They do not speak our language, but they know when people care about them and love them and they respond in kind.

Earthquake Safety Tips
On May 12, 2008, a big earthquake hit Wenchuan, Sichuan Province. Thousands of people died and many more were injured. Why are there earthquakes?
Earthquakes may happen anywhere on the earth. The surface of the earth has many plate pieces(板塊). These plates are always moving. When two plates move past each other, there is an earthquake. Many earthquakes begin under the sea. They often happen near the mountains, too.
Scientist are working hard to find out more about earthquakes. They try to predict (預測) them, but it’s very hard.
Do you know how to get ready for an earthquake? Do you know what to do during an earthquake? Here are some tips you should follow.
What to do before an earthquake
Keep a supply of food, water and some things for first aid. You should make sure you have two bottles of water, a packet of biscuits (餅干), a clean towel (毛巾), a few band-aids (創(chuàng)口貼), a radio and a flashlight (電筒) at home.
What to do during an earthquake
If you are inside:
★ Stay where you are. Quickly move under a strong desk, or along a wall. This will protect you from falling things.
★ Don’t stand near windows.
★ Turn off your gas, lights and water.
★ Don’t get into a lift during an earthquake. If your are in a lift, get out as quickly as possible.
If you are outside:
★ Don’t stand near buildings. Things may fall on you.
★ Lie on the ground until the shaking stops.
★ If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place. Stay in the car until the shaking stops.
48. The reason why an earthquake happens is that ________.

49. During an earthquake, you should do the following except _________.
A. turn off the lights and gas
B. hide under a strong desk
C. make sure you have some food and water.
D. get into a lift
50. You must protect yourself in an earthquake by ________.
A. keeping yourself away from falling things
B. lying on the floor of the room until the shaking stops.

After too long on the Net,even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend‘s Liverpudlian accent suddenly becomes too difficult to understand after his clear words on screen; a secretary‘s tone seems more rejecting than I’d imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid- hours becomes minutes, and alternately seconds stretch into days. Weekends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.
For the last three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose,I have done much of my work as a telecommuter. I submit (提交) articles and edit them by E-mail and communicate with colleagues on Internet mailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England, so much of our relationship is computer-mediated.
If I desired,I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything. I can order food, and manage my money, love and work. In fact,at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out only to get mail and buy newspapers and groceries. I watched most of the blizzard of 96 on TV.
But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal. I start to feel as though I’ve merged (融合) with my machines, taking data in spitting them back out, just another node (波節(jié))on the Net. Others on line report the same symptoms. We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It’s like attending an A. A. meeting in a bar with everyone holding a half-sipped drink. We have become the Net opponents’ worst nightmare.
What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, and clothes and face, has become an avoidance,a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human contact with cyber-interaction,coming back out of the cave can be quite difficult.
At times, I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I'd never done previously. The voices of the programs soothe (安慰) me, but then I'm jarred (使感不快) by the commercials. I find myself sucked in by soap operas, or compulsively (強制性能地) needing to keep up with the latest news and the weather. "Dateline," "Frontline," "Nightline," CNN, every possible angle of every story over and over and over, even when they are of no possible use to me. Work moves from foreground to background.
1.Compared to the clear words of her boyfriend on screen, his accent becomes____
A.unreal B.unbearable C.misleading D.not understandable
2.What does the last paragraph mean
A.Having worked on the computer for too long, she became a bit strange.
B.She is so interested in TV programs that she often forgets her work
C.She watches TV a lot in order to keep up with the latest news and the weather.
D.She turns on TV now and then in order to get some comfort from TV program.
3.What is the author’s attitude to the computer?
A.She has become bored with it.
B.She dislikes it because TV is more attractive.
C.She dislikes it because it cuts off her relation with the outside world.
D.She likes it because it is very convenient.
4.The underlined phrase “coming back out of the cave ”probably means_______.
A.going back to the dreaming world B.coming back home from the outside world
C.restoring direct human contact D.getting away from living a strange life
