     Running, as most of you already know, is a sport that all sorts of people love. Running a marathon is also
something that many long-distance runners have as a goal. Now if you decide you want to train for a marathon,
how do you go about getting yourself into excellent shape for the race of your life? 
     Most marathon training schedules last around 20 weeks and are designed for runners who can run 4-5 days
per week. The secret of a successful training schedule lies in avoiding injury that can happen through pushing
yourself too fast or too hard. So, the idea is to increase your mileage gradually from, let's say,20 miles per week
up to runs of 50 miles per week at some point before the actual marathon. Alternate (交替) hard days with easy
days: an easy day could be a day off altogether or something else like a three-mile run which, although it might
not seem to be really worth the effort to some of you, actually is a joy to do.
     Be careful how you warm up and slow down, because these are the times when injuries could happen. When
you set off for a run, take the first mile slowly and when you break into a sweat, stop and do some stretching
exercises for a couple of minutes. Always take the last mile slowly too-if you stop suddenly after a hard run,
then those of you who might have heart attacks are putting yourselves at greater risk at the point. One word of
warning: don't start a training schedule without some guidance from a properly qualified trainer. He or she will
be able to tell you what you're doing right or wrong! Remember that under normal circumstances, health
benefits from regular running are an increased sense of energy and well being, together with fitness.

Ways to Burn More Calories
Run through water
Running in water is one of the toughest activities you can perform because the wet stuff is about 12 to 15 times as resistant (具有阻力的) as air. Try your hardest to run and you can burn about 17 calories per minute.
Start fast

Women nowadays do not just want to work to help meet the rising costs of living and education for their children. They also want a career that will enable them to bring out their skills and use their potentials so that they can experience a sense of fulfillment and pride that come from achievements and success. Women need help to cope with and manage the typical stereotyping of women workers and managers. Those who look for jobs advertised in the classified sections of the newspaper often discover that many corporate positions are closed to women. And most often than not, many give preference to men by indicating in their ads phrases such as “male preferred” or “male applicants only”. Even in some family run or owned corporations, seldom can you see women managers and presidents.

Surveys show that although a man and a woman have the same level or handle the same position in an organization, the man would get a higher or bigger compensation package(薪酬) compared to women.? Because of this, many women are just contented,to be in subordinate positions in finance, human resources, sales, manufacturing and other supportive roles.

There are still other barriers that prevent women from reaching their full potentials in the world of employment. Our culture does not encourage women to excel in government and in business?related jobs. Women who are able to make it on top and handle leadership roles are sometimes regarded merely as tokens. The abilities and skills of women are normally questioned by their own peers, and sadly even by other women.

Once upon a time, on an isolated island in the Java sea, lived short people who dominated(支配, 占優(yōu)勢(shì)) the food chain. Standing no more than three and a half feet tall, these human ancestors hunted giant rats, lumbering lizards(笨拙的蜥蜴), and miniature elephants.  

   It sounds a bit like a fairy tale, but it's true. Unearthed relics on the island uncovered the remains of a race of tiny human ancestors. Homo floresiensis, as the newly discovered species has been named, apparently could date back to 13,000 years ago. This means they have a lot in common with modern humans.

  So how and why did these people get so small? Scientists suspect that it's due to the fact that this race lived on an isolated island with limited resources. Take the miniature elephants for example. When elephants first came to the island either by swimming or by some kind of natural land raft, they were probably close to full size. But since there wasn't much to eat, over time smaller elephants lived longer and better. The smaller the elephant was, the less it had to eat to stay strong and healthy.

  Scientists call this the "island role", and it can apply to humans as well as animals. Given the island's sparse(稀少) food supply, it makes sense that the early humans living there would have evolved (進(jìn)化) a body size requiring less food to survive. So bigger isn't always better.
