LG Electronics, the world’s fourth largest cell phone producer, has added another feature to the mobile phone-reading books for the visually impaired(弱視). The company started marketing the model, the LF1300 on Sep.18.No other people but the blind and visually-impaired with a certificate(證書(shū)) can buy the talking phone at sales shops of LG Electronics.
“The LF1300 is the world’s first mobile phone that is capable of reading books for the print-disabled, who otherwise could not enjoy them. This is not about making money but about continuing to put froth efforts to reduce the digital difference for the disabled,” LG Vice President said.
Its users can download about 300 audio books from the Internet site of LG Sangam Library to their phones for free in two ways. One is to access the digital library’s Website on a computer designed for the blind to get the audio books and transfer them to cell phones. The other is to download the digital books directly with cell phones through the wireless net work by touching a hot key on the LF1300 phone.
On top of its unique feature of reading books, the LF1300 is no worse than the pupular top-line phones in both outlooks and frnctionalities(功能性). The phone is armed with an MP3 player and a Bluetooth headset, enabling users to listen to the music or talk without a cord. The user interface(界面) of the LF1300 is also designed for the blind, enabling phone users to control it through a voice guidance system.
However, because the phone’s internal mimory of 17MB is small even for a single audio book file, which takes up 80MB on average, a high-volume external memory is a must for the talking book services.

“Old wives tales” are beliefs passed down from one generation to another, For example, most of us remember our parents’ telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time
Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic(蒜)is good for you, too. It can kill the type of virus that causes colds.
Unfortunately, not all of Mom’s advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems? Well, yes and no. Sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.
Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don’t hold water, there is still a lot of truth in the old wives’ tales , After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated (積累) from thousands of years of experience in family health care. We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear scientific support to prove it true or false.

C. to be admirable D. to be suitable
76. What is the author’s attitude toward “ old wives’ tale” in the text?
A. Subjective(主觀的) B. Objective(客觀的) C. Dissatisfied D. Curious
本文介紹了美國(guó)著名的生物學(xué)家Edward Wilson 的著作The Future of Life中的一些有關(guān)如何開(kāi)發(fā)、利用和保護(hù)自然資源的情況。
Edward Wilson is America’s, if not the world’s, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world’s natural resources(資源). How are they used? What has been lost? What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity(生物多樣性)of our earth.
Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment (環(huán)境) protection, Henry David Thoreau. He compares today’s Walden Pond with that of Thoreau’s day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clear: man has done great damage to his home over the years. Van the earth, with human help, be made to return to biodiversity levels that will be able to support us in the future?
Biodiversity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A mere hundred species(物種) are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load. Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas.
At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may well read and act on the ideas in this book.

Technology is making life easier for some dairy farmers. They use robotic systems to milk their cows.Cows are trained to follow a series of paths that lead to milking stations.Only one cow at a time can enter a station.
Once inside, the cow is rewarded with food.As the cow eats,a robotic arm cleans and connects the animal to the milking machine.A few minutes later, milking is complete. The gate is opened, the cow is released and the next cow enters.
The robotic systems are designed to operate 24 hours a day.The cows get to decide when they want to be milked.Cows are milked an average of about three times a day. Some are milked four to six times a day.
The cows wear collars around their necks that identify them to the system.A computer keeps records on their eating and milking.A cow is released from the station if the computer decides it should not be milked.
The automated system also measures the temperature and color of freshly produced milk.Milk is thrown away if it does not pass the tests.
Professor Plaut believes the systems will appeal(吸引) especially to the next generation of farmers. She means young people who are more interested in technology and less interested in working all the time on the farm.Still, she says the price of robotic milking systems will continue to limit their use.
Doug and Tina Suhr have more than 100 cows on their family farm.Last year it became the fourth farm in southeast Minnesota to get a robotic milking system.A recent story in a local agricultural newspaper said the first robot cost 175 000 dollars. The second cost 150 000.
Doug told AgriNews that wages that would have been paid for one employee in five years will pay for one robot. He says the increase in milk production reaches a high of more than six kilograms per cow per day.

Teens who become addicted to their cell phones may be placing their health at risk by harming their ability to sleep well,a new Swedish study suggests.
"The message is that teenagers who use their cell phones excessively are much more stressed, much more restless, much more tired, and have a great tendency to develop sleep deprivation(剝奪) as a result of their calling habits, " said the study author Dr. Gaby Bader.
He focused on the experiences of 21 healthy Swedish boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 20. The teens kept what the authors described as "regular working/studying hours" and were not previously diagnosed with any particular sleep irregularity.
He observed that the above-15 call group kept more irregular sleeping hours than the lower-use group, had more difficulty falling asleep, more difficulty waking up,and experienced more sleep disruptions(擾亂).
Bader said that among young people,a relatively recent technological invention like the cell phone has quickly become existed nearly everywhere, giving rise to considerable pressure to keep in touch. And this pressure can develop into an addiction, with serious negative results for teenager health.
"We see more and more people--especially the young generation-- who grew up with these kinds of items and gadgets in their hands," Bader said. "And they become dependent on the technology. So,we have to teach young people to be structured. To know when to have the cell phone on,and when to switch it off. To avoid becoming the slave of technology, instead of the master. "
Dr. Mary Carskadon expressed little surprise with the finding. " Interpersonal(人際的)contact is one of the things that's best at keeping us awake," she observed. "And so,a young person receiving cell phone texts or phone calls is going to have more deep disturbances. And they are going to be tired and restless, and probably,as a result, going to use more stimulants(興奮劑).And judgment is not always the best in our teenage years. So, that's where I think parental attention to this issue may be useful. "
72. Teens who become addicted to their cell phones will become .
A. too anxious to relax. B. unable to stay still.
C. unable to have real rest. D. excited to forget sleep.
73. What we can learn from the sixth paragraph is that .
A. more teens know how to make technology serve them
B. teens used to be taught how to use technology
C. we should make use of technology rather than be in the control of it
D. the young generation depends less on the technology to grow up
74. According to Dr. Mary Carskadon, how to deal with the problem?
A. Teenagers should judge how to use their phones.
B. Teenagers should reduce their interpersonal contact.
C. Teenagers should switch their phones off.
D. Parents should give more attention to children's use of phones.
75.What's the passage mainly about?
A. Too much phone time has a bad effect on teens' sleep.
B. Too many cell phone calls have cost teens too much.
C. Few cell phone calls will damage teens' friendships.
D. Too little cell phone time improves teens' attention at class.
