One of Britain's leading fee-paying schools, Wellington College, is to offer classes on happiness to fight against the negative influences in society caused by materialism (功利主義) and celebrity obsession (名譽(yù)崇拜), its headteacher announced.

Wellington school was founded in 1853 and currently has 750 boys aged 13 to 18 and 50 girls aged 16 plus. Fees range from 6,132 pounds per term for day pupils to 7,665 pounds per term for boarders.

"We are introducing classes on happiness," said Anthony Seldon, master of Wellington College. "We have been focusing too much on academics (學(xué)術(shù)) and missing something far more important."

A psychologist will oversee a pilot project teaching "happiness lessons" from the start of the next academic year. Pupils aged 14 to 16 will be given one lesson a week, learning skills such as how to manage relationships, physical and mental health, negative emotions and how to achieve one's ambitions.

The college's religious education staff will teach the course as a complement to, rather than a substitute for, usual religious education classes, said Seldon, who is also a political critic and author.

"To me, the most important job of any school is to turn out young men and women who are happy and secure (可靠的)." explained Seldon. "Celebrity, money and possessions are too often the touchstones for teenagers and yet these are not where happiness lies. Our children need to know that as societies become richer, they don't become happier -- a fact regularly shown by social science research."

Orphans (孤兒) whose parents died of AIDS in Henan Province have been given new hope. Last week the provincial government answered the children’s cries by promising 60 million yuan to improve schools, orphanages (孤兒院) and living conditions. But without the efforts of Dr. Gao Yaojie, these cries may never have been heard.

“I’m a doctor and it’s my duty to cure diseases and save live,” said the 77-year- old grandmother. Gao was named one of the 2003 People of Year on February 20 by CCTV after millions of people took part in an online poll. But in 1996, when she started to promote AIDS awareness, using money from her own pocket, her actions were widely misunderstood.

“Although some of the children were born with HIV, 90 percent of them were not infected (被感染),” Gao said. “But people still reject them. Many orphans change their names after finding a foster family (領(lǐng)養(yǎng)家庭).”

The horror of Henan’s AIDS problem became known in 1996. Frequent and unsafe bloodselling by poor farmers in the late 1980s and early1990s had caused HIV to spread through dirty needles and infected blood use. As a doctor, Gao believed she should help: over the last eight years she has visited over 1 000 AIDS and HIV patients and published thousands of pamphlets on AIDS awareness. With her help, hundreds of orphans have returned to school or found foster families.

“It’s a disaster for the whole nation, not only for those innocent (無(wú)辜的) patients and their families,” she explained. Gao is delighted that so many childless families offer to foster orphans. But there is still much that can be done to support these children. “I hope that warm-hearted high school students will also reach out and offer a helping hand,” she said.

The passage mainly talks about _______.

    the dangers of AIDS

how the government help those orphans

how Gao Yaojie helped the orphans

the serious AIDS problem in Henan

Gao Yaojie was named one of the 2003 People of Year because ________.

the government would not answer the children’s cry without her

she used her own money to start to promote AIDS

    she is a doctor

she visited over 1 000 AIDS and HIV patients

The government promised 60 million yuan _______.

    to reward Gao Yaojie

to help to treat HIV and AIDS patients

to help the children whose parents died of AIDS

    to build new hospitals

A wallet that looks like a piece of newspaper, an atlas, or an express parcel receipt? Or a business card that looks like a notepad? No kidding.

Bai Minghui, a Beijing-based designer, creates his artwork using Tyvek, a synthetic paper material which is difficult to tear, waterproof and, more importantly, totally recyclable.

Born to a worker family in 1983 in Tangshan, Hebei Province, Bai worked as a graphic designer at a financial magazine in Beijing after graduating from Minzu University of China.

In the spring of 2008, Bai visited an exhibition about Tyvek in Beijing's 798 art zone, and then worked with the material, trying to bring his designs to life. The first thing that came into his mind was the paper wallet, a must-try handicraft assignment(手工作業(yè))that most Chinese students do in elementary school.

"A paper wallet is definitely more useful than a paper crane or frog," Bai told Beijing Review, smiling. "At first, many people have no idea what it is, because it looks like a piece of newspaper or an express parcel receipt, and feels like real paper. But it's hard to tear.

"The completed, folded wallet is seamless, which creates so much fun for a designer. To be honest, I didn't think about profits at all," he said.

After months of research and development on printing and designing, the first generation of his paper wallet made a stunning debut(上市) in May 2008. The second generation, which offers a greater range of pattern options, was put on the market at the beginning of 2009.

"You can have graffiti(涂鴉) or write down phone numbers on it, or paint whatever you like. I would like people to be able to use it easily," he said. "I don't want to do things without creative ideas. Now my focus is on how to create better design rather than the wallet itself."

In which order did Bai do the following things?

    a. create the paper wallet             b. study in Minzu University

    c. work as a graphic designer          d. visit an exhibition about Tyvek in Beijing

    A. cbad                B. bcda                 C. cbda                 D. bcad

Which of the following words can best describe the designer?

Tyvek, a synthetic paper material, has the following characters EXCEPT ____.

What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Most of the Chinese students have tried to make some kind of paper work.

    B. Many Chinese are fond of painting different things on their wallets.

    C. Most of the wallets that people use nowadays can be recycled.

    D. Most of the designers based in Beijing have tried Tyvek to create their own work of art.

A woman renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk’s office was asked to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

“What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a …”

“Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I’m a mother.”

“We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation… ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder.

One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title.“What is your occupation?” she asked.

The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.”

The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair.

I repeated the title slowly, and then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “Just what you do in this field?”

Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn’t), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.”

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up (依托) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants---ages 13, 7, and 3.

Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.

I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.”

Motherhood…What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

What can we infer from the conversation between the woman and the recorder at the beginning of the passage?

           A. The woman felt ashamed to admit what her job was.

           B. The recorder was impatient and rude.

           C. The author was upset about the situation that mothers faced.

           D. Motherhood was not recognized and respected as a job by society.

How did the female clerk feel at first when the author told her occupation?

           A. curious        B. indifferent       C. puzzled       D. interested

How did the author feel when describing her job to the clerk?

       A. calm     B. panic-stricken      C. confident      D. cool

Why did the woman clerk show more respect for the author?

    A. Because the author cared little about rewards.

    B. Because she admired the author’s research work in the lab.

    C. Because she thought the author did admirable work.

    D. Because the writer did something she had little knowledge of.

What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

    A. To show how you describe your job affects your feelings toward it.

    B. To argue that motherhood is a worthy career and deserves respect.

    C. To show that the author had a grander job than Emily.

    D. To show that being a mother is hard and boring work.
