After the First Word War，a French soldier named Francois retuned to his hometown with his sick wife.  Because he had been disabled in the war，F(xiàn)rancois could hardly do anything Before long he became terribly poor.

    Every year the former soldiers in the town would hold a reunion party. This year the party was held in Grandin’s house Since he had become a rich man he provided them with lots of good wine and tasty food   

    Grandin was so glad that he took out his treasure -----a big gold coin to show them.  Pleased with himself，he told them the story of his coin

    The coin was passed round Everybody looked at it in turn with interest They talked and laughed Later most of them got drunk and the room was very noisy The gold coin was soon forgotten.

   When Grandin wanted to put the gold coin away，he found it was missing. Everybody helped to look for the coin in the room but they failed.

    Someone suggested every’ one should be searched. to which all agreed except Francois. “I am not a thief . Why should I be searched?” he shouted. Being looked at with suspicious(懷疑的)stares of his old friends. he went out of Grandin’s house.

    Since then Francois had been looked down upon. People kept away from him  Even when his wife died，no one offered condolences(吊唁)   

    Some years later，Grandin repaired his house.  One day he happened to find the coin in a creak of the floor. He hurried to François’ shabby house to tell him about it and apologized for having suspected him for such a long time.

    Grandin then asked Francois，”Why didn’t you allow a body search at that time?” Francois.  now an old sick man. answered. "Because my pockets were then full of food that I had take from your table and would carry home for my hungry wife and children. "
