6、A "blogger" is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a "blog". The word "blog" is a short way of saying Web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.

There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas in many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write about their ideas and react to the ideas of others.

A research company called Perscus has studied more than 300 Web logs . It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.

However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs . And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.

At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service "weblogs. com". He says the site became too costly to continue . He started the blog four years ago. And thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closing.

One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca' s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the Web-site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called "The Weblog Handbook". It has been translated into four languages so far.

Ms. Blood says Rebecea's Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything--politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on -line bank accounts.

Paula Radcliffe, chasing (角逐) a third London marathon title(冠軍), says she has became a stronger person after her terrible experience at the 2004 Athens Games.

Radcliffe, who failed to complete the Olympic marathon and the 10,000m last August, said: "Athens made me a stronger person and it made me care less about criticism (批評(píng))"

"In the past I wanted to please everyone, but now I am going to listen even more to the people around me."

She didn't care about criticism made at the weekend by Liz McColgan, who felt Radcliffe should have rested and let her body recover after her failure in Athens.

"Liz is someone I look up to but she hasn't spoken to me since last year and if she really cared for me, I'm sure she would have contacted (聯(lián)系) me."

Instead Radcliffe won the New York City marathon just 11 weeks after Athens.

"In New York I wasn't in my best state but I did know I was good enough to win the race. "

Radcliffe insisted her only goal in Sunday's race would be winning a third title and not chasing world records.

However, Radcliffe has not ruled out(排除) in the future chasing her "final" world record time and questioned sayings that marathon runners have the ability in their career to produce only four or five world-class times.

"I don't think that -- although I can't put a number on it," said. Radcliffe. "That changes from person to person."

Radcliffe is sure she can better her winning London 2003 performance at some point in the future. Following a successful three-month training period in the United States, the 31-year-old will chase a third title on Sunday after her first victory in 2002 and again 12 months later.

Radcliffe clocked a time of 2:18:56 in her first 42.2-kilometre race three years ago.

Afterwards she set a "mixed course" mark of 2:17:18 five months later in Chicago before lowering that to a time of 2:15:25 in the 2003 London event.

63. Radcliffe's failure in Athens made her ________.

   A. develop respect for Liz     B. love people around her more

   C. rest for five months         D. face criticism calmly

64. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

   A. Radcliffe broke the world record in the New York City marathon.

   B. Radcliffe didn't fully recover before the New York City marathon.

   C. Radcliffe won her first marathon title in the New York City marathon.

   D. Radcliffe had a 3-month training before the New York City marathon.

65. By saying "I can't put a number on it," Radcliffe means she's not sure _____ .

   A. if she has the ability to set a new world record

   B. if she can win another race though she has won many times

   C. how many times a marathon runner can set the world record

   D. if she has the ability to produce four or five world-class times

66. According to the text, Radcliffe has won ____ London marathon title(s).

   A. four     B. three     C. two     D. one

67. What can we learn from Radcliffe's story?

   A. Practice makes perfect.                 B. Well begun is half done.

   C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.    D. Where there is a will there is a way.

One day Walt Disney had a vision. It was a vision of a place where children and parents could have fun together. The more Walt dreamed of a "magical park," the more imaginative and elaborate it became.

The original plans for the park were on 8 acres next to the Burbank studios where his employees and families could go to relax. Although, World War II put those plans on hold. During the war, Disney had time to come up with new ideas, and creations for his magical park. It was soon clear that 8 acres wouldn't be enough.

Finally in 1953, he had the Stanford Research Institute conduct a survey for a 100-acre site, outside of Los Angeles. He needed space to build rivers, waterfalls, and mountains; he would have flying elephants and giant teacups; a fairy-tale castle, moon rockets, and a scenic railway; all inside a magic kingdom he called "Disneyland."

The search for the best venue for the park ended in the rural Anaheim, California with a purchase of a 160-acre orange grove near the junction of the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) and Harbor Boulevard.

Construction for Disneyland began on July 21, 1954, 12 months before the park was scheduled to open.

Some 160-acres of citrus trees had been cleared and 15 houses moved to make room for the park. However, when the real designing came around, Disney met with inevitable questions. How do you make believable wild animals, that aren't real? How do you make a Mississippi paddle ship? How do you go about building a huge castle in the middle of Anaheim, California? Disney asked his movie studio staff for answers. The design of Disneyland was something never done before.   There would be four uniquely different theme parts: Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland Tomorrow land. Bit by bit, Disneyland got ready for Opening Day. The staff worked around the clock to get ready.

But opening day was a terrible disaster. Beside the terrible opening day conditions, the park did eventually pick up. By 1965, ten years after opening day, 50 Million visitors had come through the gates.

I needed to get some money so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham's for the first fortnight of the January sale.I can't say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I'll never forget.

I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales, where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock (貨物) and the stock that people buy all the year round;  some of these things are slightly reduced.Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them.Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale.Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds”(clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.

When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous.

When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in.I couldn't believe my eyes; this wasn't shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn't keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.

Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colours and styles they wanted.Quarrels broke out.Mothers were using their small children to crawl through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn't get near themselves.

Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose; each wanting to be the first served.Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper81 was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why twice a year, Graham's were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.

In the sale fever; people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.You won't believe this. But as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

What kind of clothes is likely to be s0ld 5% cheaper?

A.Last summer's clothes,

B.Clothes not in perfect condition.

C.Clothes bought in specially for the sales.

D.Clothes for winter.

Which of the following statements is true?

A.The customers gave up the queuing, for which the English are famous.

B.The customers kept their temper while looking for clothes they wanted.

C.Small children enjoyed crawling though people's legs.

D.The security guards were fearless of the crowd.

A.There were too many clothes and they wanted to clear them in the sales.

B.They were eager to show that they were clever at doing business.

C.They could take the chance to raise the prices of all their clothes.

D.They wanted to make more money by having sales.

In the early days of the internet, many people worried that as people in the rich world embraced new computing and communications technologies, people in the poor world would be left stranded on the wrong side of a "digital divide." Yet the debate over the digital divide is founded on a myth that plugging poor countries into the internet will help them to become rich rapidly.

This is highly unlikely, because the digital divide is not a problem in itself, but a symptom of deeper, more important divides: of income, development and literacy(識(shí)字). Fewer people in poor countries than in rich ones own computers and have access to the internet simply because they are too poor, are illiterate, or have other more immediate concerns, such as food, health care and security. So even if it were possible to wave a magic wand(棒) and cause a computer to appear in every household on earth, it would not achieve very much: a computer is not useful if you have no food or electricity and cannot read. Yet such Wand-waving - through the construction of specific local infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施) projects such as rural tele-centers--is just the sort of thing for which the UN's new fund is intended.

This sort of thing is the wrong way to go about addressing the inequality in access to digital technologies: it is treating the symptoms, rather than the underlying(下面) causes. The benefits of building rural computing centers, for example, are unclear. Rather than trying to close the divide for the sake of it, the more sensible goal is to determine how best to use technology to promote bottom-up development. And the answer to that question turns out to be remarkably clear: by promoting the spread not of PCs and the Internet, but of mobile phones.

1. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Plugging poor countries into the Internet will help them to become rich rapidly.

B. Poor countries should be given more basic devices other than advanced ones.

C. Rich countries should help poor ones become rich.

D. People in poor countries cannot afford devices such as computer.

2. What did the author mean by referring "digital divide." (Line 3, Para. 1)?

A. Digital technology will make the gap between rich world and poor world wider.

B. Digital technology will divide people into rich and poor world.

C. People can be divided digitally.

D. To divide people in digital world is wrong.

3. We can infer from the 2nd paragraph that_______.

A. people in poor countries cannot use computer because of illiteracy.

B. poor people cannot use computers.

C. there would be no magic to cause a computer to appear in every household on earth.

D. people in poor countries need more basic living conditions than computers.

4. Considering the following sentences, which one would the author most agree?

A. Digital technology is useless.

B. Digital divide will help poor countries become rich.

C. Poor people need more immediate concerns, such as food, health care and security.

D. Mobile phones should be promoted firstly.

5. The following passage will probably be:

A. How to promote using of mobile phones.

B. How to use technology to promote bottom-up development.

C. The benefits of building rural computing centers.

D. How to meet the need of food, health and security in poor countries.
