Don’t go to Kauai. Go to any of the other Hawaiian Islands—Maui, Lanai, the Big Island—but leave Kauai for us. The weather on Kauai is so unpredictable that sometimes it rains all day—in fact, it’s the second –wettest spot on the earth. Yes, there are giant double rainbows all the time, and the sunlight through the clouds is magical. But if you are not interested in these, go somewhere else. You just can’t control the nature on Kauai, and who wants to surrender to the nature when you could be at a fine hotel, lying in a comfortable chair next to a swimming pool, with food served upon request?

So what if Kauai produces surf champions the way Texas produces cowboys? Most of its 300 white-sand beaches are unmarked. Unless you connect with the local people, the hidden spots are hard to find. While Hanalei is the most beautiful town you’ve ever dreamed of, you can forget about discos and clubs. Worse, it doesn’t have one single four-star restaurant. What it does have is the original drive- through places where you pass by a rambutan tree (紅毛丹樹(shù)),and pick a piece of fruit.

Shopping in Kauai? Forget it—unless you are interested in shell necklaces and beautifully carved wood bowls. Kauai is not about pampering. It’s about going natural and finding the nature within you. It’s a do-it-yourself place that offers walking along the coast, driving and swimming in the Pacific Ocean, and lying on the beach.

Don’t go to Kauai unless you have a lot of time, because there’s only one road, which can be slightly dull. It winds through the beautiful scenery of waterfalls, rivers flowing into the ocean, and taro(芋頭)fields. You have no choice but to look at everything, because the speed limit is 35 m.p.h.

If you’re not interested in color, don’t bother with Kauai, because that’s what you get—red roads, blue oceans, and a hundred different shades of green. It’s like diving on land. Many people on Kauai believe that this is Lemuria—a lost island in the Atlantic. Can you imagine? Those Hawaiians, surfers, New Agers, and people who love nature and beauty and want a different quality of life—what do they know, anyway? Forget about it—you’re not going to like it. Go somewhere else. Leave Kauai for us.

And then there was Matthew.

After school Matthew would come into my classroom to dust erasers or empty the wastepaper basket.

“Why do you come in to visit me?” I asked him one night.

“Because at home no one listens to me,” was his reply.Later I found out that there were eleven children in his family, with Matthew near the middle.

One time when he came to see me,he said,“Miss Ausmus, the kids are saying that you and Mr D.like each other.”

“Matthew,Mr D.is a nice man and we both teach some of the same students. He is not my boyfriend, and it’s not something the children should be talking about anyway.”

Another time,he said,“Will you wait for me so I can marry you when I grow up?”

“Sorry,Matthew, but that won’t work,” I answered in a gentle way.

After my second year of teaching,I said “goodbye” to Matthew and his family.

It’s no secret that we’re into computers. And why not? On the Internet, we can catch up on news, plan vacations, pay bills and make friends. But for some, once they type their way onto the Internet, they just can’t stop.Internet addiction(沉溺)can happen to anyone who’s lonely, and that includes two surprising groups:college students and homemakers.Away from their families, homesick and overwhelmed, many college students seek connections.Their brightest freshmen were failing to maintain good grades, they realized half were using the Internet excessively(過(guò)度地)!They couldn’t forbid it, because students needed it for schoolwork. So they provided counseling(咨詢)to help students adjust to college-and a year later, the number of web junkie flunkers(不及格的學(xué)生)dropped by half. And homemakers are prone to(有……的傾向)addiction too, if they’re shy.But the more on-line connection vulnerable(易受傷害的)people make, the more they may neglect the connections they hold in real life.In recent study,51 percent of men and 42 percent of women named the Internet as one of the reasons they were not getting enough sleep! And 68 percent of Internet addicts surveyed(被調(diào)查的)said their on-line usage was destroying their relationships. The person will retire to the computers at night instead of the bedroom and to cyberspace(網(wǎng)絡(luò)空間)relationships with strangers instead of communication with families. There are steps to take to make sure your family doesn’t get hooked(上癮,入迷),such as:Putting the computer in a common area like a living room where you can’t spend hours on-line; using a timer to limit on-line time; joining a club or taking up a hobby.Anyone with balance and face-to-face contact with others isn’t likely to get hooked.Your family member or friend could be a cyberholic(電腦狂)if:They’re lying about how much time they spend on-line.They’re spending more and more time on-line and less and less time with you. They get anxious when they try to cut back on on-line time. They’re losing sleep to go on-line.

You know how wonderful you are, and you know that others know how wonderful you are, but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When it happens, there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is.Don't let jealousy spoil your relationships.Deal with it at once and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.

It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you'll have to do just that.Don't approach them and ask why they are jealous of you, just take some time alone with them and let them know that you've been feeling like there's been something coming between you.If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling.Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.

When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what(s)he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example,(s)he says that(s)he feels like(s)he doesn't want to spend any time with you because you are always with your new friends from swim team then maybe you could invite him or her along the next time, just the two of you.Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise.Don't limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy.Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.

Even the best of friendships can be ruined by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can't, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won't.

Attitude is an internal(內(nèi)在的)state that influences the choices of personal action made by the

Individual. Some researchers consider that attitudes come from differences between beliefs and ideas:others believe that attitudes come from emotional states. Here, we focus on the effects of attitudes upon behavior, that is, upon the choices of action made by the individual.

The kinds of actions taken by human beings are obviously influenced greatly by attitudes.Whether one listens to classical music or rock, whether one obeys the speed limit while driving, whether one encourages one's husband or wife to express his or her own ideas-all are influenced by attitudes. These internal states are acquired throughout life from situations one is faced with in the home, in the streets, and in the school.

Of course, the course of action chosen by an individual in any situation will be largely determined by the particulars of that situation. An individual who has a strong attitude of obeying laws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in sight.A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may steal a penny when she thinks no one will notice. But the internal state which remains unchanged over a period of time, and which makes the individual behave regularly in a variety of situations, is what is meant by an attitude.

Attitudes are learned in a variety of ways. They can result from single incidents, as when an attitude toward snakes is acquired by an experience in childhood at the sudden movement of a snake. They can result from the individual's experiences of success and pleasure, as when someone acquires a positive attitude toward doing crossword puzzles by being able to complete some of them, and frequently, they are learned by copying other people's behavior, as when a child learns how to behave toward foreigners by observing the actions of his parents.Regardless of these differences, there is something in common in the learning and modification(修正)of attitudes.

(1)

According to the passage, attitudes ________.

[ ]

A.

come from different situations in one's life

B.

are largely affected by one's behavior

C.

remain unchanged in one's daily life

D.

could be chosen according to one's will

(2)

The author uses the examples in Paragraph 3 to show ________.

[ ]

A.

people often make mistakes when they are not noticed

B.

people with good attitudes may sometimes do bad deeds

C.

particulars of a situation may influence an individual's action

D.

an individual may change his or her attitude fairly easily

(3)

Which of the following is TURE about the learning of attitudes?

[ ]

A.

Attitudes are only learned through one's success.

B.

Attitudes learned in danger will last longer.

C.

Copying others behavior is not a good idea.

D.

Attitudes can be learned from one's parents.

(4)

What would be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.

B.

Nature of Attitude.

C.

Choices of Attitudes.

D.
