I had been rather proud of myself when my friends and family got the ticket, whether it was for speeding, parking or stop sign violations(違反). It was something that happened to others. But last Friday I joined the club.
I was asked to do a new project last week. On Friday morning on my way to work, I suddenly remembered that I had spent the past six weeks without considering that I had a week’s vacation planned during that time. I was very disappointed with myself for not remembering it.
The truth is that I was not paying enough attention to my driving and I did not come to a complete stop at the stop sign in front of a school. I was so distracted(思想不集中的) that I didn’t even notice I had a policeman on my tail with his lights flashing. Finally I looked in my mirror and caught on.
The policeman was rude and took my papers. Luckily, I had everything up to date and since I had never had a ticket before, there was nothing for him to do but write me a ticket. While I was sitting there in the seat of “shame”, I felt bad. If I had been that distracted and a child had run onto the road, perhaps I would have not reacted as well as I could have. It was a wake-up call.
People at work asked me if I tried to talk my way out of it. Frankly, it never occurred to me. I felt guilty(有罪的). Now I no longer have a clean driving record. Please be careful out there, as a moment’s distraction can lead to tragedy(悲。.

I would like to talk to you about one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I was born and raised there and now I visit it from time to time. My family moved to the city, so I only go back to see friends or to camp and fish.
I grew up in a small town called Antonito Co. It is surrounded by mountains. So camping is a big source of happiness in the valley. There are so many beautiful places to hike.
The town itself is very small. It is said that if you blink when you’re going through it, you’ll miss it. This has some truth in it considering the size of the town. We have one grocery store, a tiny post office, and a tiny bank. There are also a few gas stations, bars, some excellent restaurants, a small hospital and of course several schools. However, for clothing and shoes, you have to drive thirty miles to Alamosa to shop there.
Everyone in the town is nice and we all know each other. The crime rate is zero unless you count some weekend fights that break out because some people drink too much. The classes in school are small, so you get a lot of attention from the teacher.
You’re probably wondering why I don’t live there. Well, I can’t get a job there. A lot of the businesses are family-owned. And they never fire their employees. So the employees work there usually until they retire. Most people have to go to other places to get a job .

Good Housekeeping has discovered that even if a child wear a helmet when she bikes, or skates, it may not protect her from a serious head injury.
Every year, 390,000 children under age 15 go to hospital emergency rooms with bike-related injuries. Of that number, about one third children suffer head injuries and an estimated 200 die. By wearing a helmet, a child can reduce her risk of injury by as much as 85 percent. But remember —— a bicycle helmet must fit properly to be safe. Here are five steps to making sure your child's helmet fits properly.
1) If you haven't bought your child's helmet already, you might want to consider one with a rear stabilizer(穩(wěn)定桿). A rear stabilizer holds the back of the head gently and helps the helmet stay correctly positioned.
2) The helmet should fit closely and shouldn't slide from side to side or front to back. If your child can put two fingers on both temples inside the helmet, it's too big. Try a smaller size. But if the next size down is too small, use the fit pads(護(hù)墊). Fit pads come in different sizes and attach to the helmet with Velcro.
3) Tell your child to open her mouth widely and ask if she can feel the helmet push down onto the top of her head. If she can't, you need to readjust her helmet.
4) To prevent strap slippage, wind a rubber band around the strap where it meets the fastener.
5) Recheck the fit regularly.
You should replace the bicycle helmet:
If she has been in an accident with it.
If the buckle(金屬扣) breaks or if a piece breaks off.
If it doesn't have a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, American Society for Testing and Materials, or Snell Memorial Foundation sticker.
If it doesn't fit correctly. Even if the helmet fit perfectly two years ago, it might be too small now.
1.Who is this passage mainly written for?
A. Children. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. helmet producers.
2.What does the author mainly want to stress in the second paragraph?
A. The bike-related injury is a serious threat to the children.
B. The bicycle helmets must fit properly while the children are biking.
C. It’s necessary for the children to wear helmets while biking.
D. Many students suffer bike-related injuries every year.
3.If a girl finds a helmet a little bit big for her head, what should she do?
A. She must buy a smaller size.
B. She can use some fit pads.
C. She can put fingers on both temples inside the helmet.
D. She must make helmet slide from side to side.
4.Phil White, a father, found the buckle of his girl’s helmet broken, he can_______
A. buy a new bicycle helmet for her
B. mend the bicycle helmet himself
C. continue to use the bicycle helmet
D. throw away the broken buckle

Malnutrition (營(yíng)養(yǎng)失調(diào))remains a serious problem for India. But a new study shows that India’s leading causes of death now also include diseases related to obesity (肥胖)such as heart disease.
India’s National Family Health Survey shows that more than twenty percent of Indians living in cities are overweight or obese. And in the northwestern state of Punjab, that is true for almost forty percent of women.
Aradhna Tripathi is a business professional in New Delhi. She said, “ Eating is the most important thing in any Indian household and how you show your love and gratitude(感激) for a person is through the kind of food you serve him. And the kind of lifestyle we are leading is one of the reasons why we have the number of obese people increasing every day.
But Aradhna Tripathi says she has decided to lose weight. Her mother and grandmother are also diabetic(患糖尿病的). In fact, the International Diabetes Federation says India is now the diabetes capital of the world. Researchers say Indians store more body fat per kilogram than Europeans. That means obese Indians are even more at the risk of diabetes than other people.
Doctor Anoop Misra at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi says the risk of diabetes is crossing social and economic lines. Five years ago, he says, obesity and diabetes were limited to India’s richest people, but now things have changed.
But Doctor Misra is hopeful that the spread (蔓延,傳播)of obesity can be slowed. And he says it must start in schools by giving all Indian children the same instruction on physical activity and diet.
The World Health Organization says China is also moving up in obesity rates. The estimate (估計(jì)) has reached about five percent countryside and as high as twenty percent in some cities.
1.What is this passage mainly about?
A.Obesity has become a big killer in India. |
B.Heart disease is troubling people in India. |
C.People in India live a very unhealthy life. |
D.Malnutrition remains a serious problem in India. |
2.According to Aradhna Tripathi , one of the causes of the obesity problems is_________.
A..the development of economy |
B.the change of Indians’ lifestyle |
C.Indians’ attitude (態(tài)度)towards eating |
D.Indians’ attitude towards obesity. |
3. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5?
A.Most wealthy people in India are overweight. |
B.Five years ago, few people in India were overweight |
C.Few poor people are diabetic for economic reasons. |
D.Now even the poor in India suffer from obesity. |
