3、SEOUL: South Korean scientist have cloned cats that glow red when exposed to the dark, an achievement that could help develop cures for human genetic diseases, the science and Technology Ministry has said.
Three Turkish Angora cats were born in January and February through cloning with a gene that produces a red florescent(熒光的) protein that makes them glow in the dark. One died at birth, but the two others survived, the ministry said.
The ministry claimed it was first time cats with modified genes have been cloned. Scientists from Gyeongsang National University took skin cells from a cat and inserted the florescent gene into them before transplanting the genetically modified cells into eggs.
The development means other genes can also be inserted in the course cloning, leading to the way for producing lab cats with genetic diseases, including those of humans, to help develop new treatments, the ministry said.
“Cats have similar genes to those of humans,” veterinary professor Kong Ⅱ-keun of Gyeongsang National University said.
“We can make genetically modified cats that can be used to develop new cures for genetic diseases.”
Keitaro Kato, a geneticist at Kinki University in western Japan who has cloned fish, said the research could be significant if it eventually helps treat people with genetic disease.
“People with genetic disorders usually have to receive treatment throughout their lives that is very hard on them,” Kato said.
“If these results can help to make their lives easier, then I think it’s a wonderful thing.”
1.The cloned cat can glow in the dark due to __________.
A.its gene which has special protein B.its skin which was transplanted
C.its gene which was replaced D.its skin which was put colours in
2.According to the writer, the new science record’s importance is that _________.
A.it may show the human’s intelligence
B.it may display South Korean scientists talent
C.it may help to develop a new treatment for man
D.it may help South Korean scientists earn more money
3.What does “the research” refer to in Keitaro Kato’s opinion?
A.Keitaro Kato’s research-cloned fish.
B.South Korean’s research-cloned cats.
C.Both Japanese and South Korean’s researches.
D.Neither of Japanese and South Korean’s research.

A.show the importance of the scientific work
B.tell the different opinions about the research
C.a(chǎn)ccept the fact of the work done in South Korean
