  To explain why he liked his art teacher the best, 16-year-old Dainzin Tanam could not write more words than a simple sentence"Because he teaches me painting.”

  In the eyes of his teachers at the Lhasa Special Education School, the deaf boy was a little painter.Five years ago, however, all Tanam could do was to stay in bed until noon, and then stare at the sky through the window, waiting for his parents'return.

  His mother Yangzom said she had no other choice but to lock him in the house every day as she and her husband had to work and they did not want to allow the boy to roam(閑逛) the streets.

  “Every day when I came back home and saw my lonely poor son, I felt my heart hurt.But now I can finally feel a bit relieved,"the mother said.She said it was the school that changed his son.“Without the school, I dared not imagine how my son would be now.”

  With a governmental fund of 4.5 million yuan, the special education school was founded in 2000.The only government-run school for handicapped children in Tibet, it now has 28 teachers and 120 school children in nine classes of 5 grades.Eight classes in the school are for deaf kids and the other one is for blind kids.

  Students can enjoy free food, boarding, clothing and medical services in the school, which is open to deaf and blind children from all over the autonomous region.

  Tibetan sign language and Tibetan braille are basic courses here.Children also have Tibetan, Chinese, mathematics, science, painting, dancing and sports lessons.

  A"black and white"textbook seemed appealing among the colorful books in Tanam’s schoolbag.The text was handwritten.

  It was the Tibetan language textbook compiled and written by teachers themselves.

  “As textbooks for students in ordinary schools sometimes are too abstract and hard for our kids to understand, two other Tibetan language teachers and I compiled the textbook to make things easier for them,"said teacher Dawa.

  Those books with the love of all the teachers, though not spoke out, will surely help children enjoy their life by supporting themselves after leaving the school.

When I was about 12, I had an “enemy”, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings.      Last year in my high school child-development class,each student had to take the “Think-It-Over” baby home for a night to get a taste of parenthood.

It was a Friday night when my turn came to take the 10-pound plastic doll home. The doll really did look like a live baby from a distance. It even had a pleasant baby powder smell. I took the baby home and named him Tyler.

Others just smiled at me pathetically(同情地) and felt sorry for me because I was only a child with a child. In our meal,my friends and I received strange looks from the others in the restaurant. S so glad to finally go home.

I learned a lot through my experience with the “Think-It-Over” baby. The dollly strengthened my thinking I was not ready to be a parent, but it also made me e aware of the larger picture. It opened my eyes to the judgments people make about rs. People do not realize that some things are not the way they seem. I was only  ying it around for a class project. The people in the restaurant were so quick to judge because they thought I was a teenage mom. I sometimes catch myself judging people I not know, just because of the first impression they give. In  reality, I have no idea about real stories. We should all be slower to judge others,and realize that some things are as they seem.

Once again, I had run away and really did not know why. I walked out of the gate to go to school and then kept walking, and walking, and walking. I was 11years old. “Reach out and take the letter from my hand,” she insisted. Slowly I reached out, acting as though I was taking something from her hand. “Now hold the paper tightly and take it to any store owner,” she instructed.

I closed my thumb and finger as though I were grasping the letter and began walking toward Five Points. Several blocks down the road, I came to a store with a woman sitting behind a counter. I opened the door, walked in, and stopped directly in front of her. Very slowly I held out my hand toward her. I watched her face to see if she might think I was crazy or something.

She reached out and as her hand touched mine, I opened my tightly closed fingers and stood there waiting. She pulled back, smiled, and looked down at her hands.

She immediately turned and walked to the back of the store. After a while, the woman returned holding a paper plate.

“Here is something for you to eat.” She smiled and signaled to me to eat. Within two or three minutes, I downed the entire plate of food and several Coca Colas.

Before I left, she held out her hand and asked me to take the letter. Again seeing nothing, I held out my hand and closed my thumb and finger as though I were taking something from her. Tightly grasping nothing more than air, I walked out into the street and headed back to the park. The old woman was still there.

“It is really magic. Can I have the letter so I can be magic too?” I asked her.

She reached out, took my hand, and opened my tightly closed fingers. Whatever was being held between my fingers, she took and placed into her apron pocket. “Would you help someone if they were hungry?” she asked me.

“Yes Ma’am.”

“Would you help someone if they were hurt, cold or scared?”

“Yes Ma’am. I would be their friend.”        

“You are a very lucky little boy. You will never need the magic letter,” she responded.
