20、Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree, In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses,  each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; a student will probably attend four or five courses during each term while attending a university. Normally a student may expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. Of course, they can work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.

Every course that the student takes will be given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective (未來(lái)的)employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work on students. But in spite of this some students still spare their time to take part in the student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating, has to appear before a student court. with the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does include a certain number of activities. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.

68. Normally a student would at least attend ______ classes each week.

A. 36       B. 16       C. 30        D. 12

A. to live at home and drive to class

B. to live in a different university

19、 we all know that eveyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men’s minds decline more than women’s, according to the results of a worldwide survey.

General differences seem to be inherent in male and female brains: men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images ( useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial (空間的)skills), while women tend to excel (擅長(zhǎng)) at recalling information from their brain’s files. Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed. Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline. Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men testd are the survivors, “ so they’re the ones that may not have shown such cognitive (認(rèn)知的)decline,” said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in English.

People surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated (旋轉(zhuǎn)的) form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time, e.g. “ object usually colored gray”, and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men usually excel; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and woen performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.

64.The underlined word “ inherent” in the second paragraph means ________.

A. natural     B. great      C. exact        D. absolute

65. According to the passage, which of the following can Not be typed into the same category?

A. Cloud     B. Sheep   C. Tree      D. Goose

66. Which of the following statements is Ture according to the passage?

A. Men do better than women when it comes to learning English.

B. Women stand out at remembering people’s names.

C. Men excell at typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time.

D. Women excel at dealing mathematic problem.

67. One important factor that affects the correctness of the results is that _______.

A. the old men tested may not have shown such cognitive decline.

B. people surveyed are all old.

C. people taking part in this test came from all over the world.

D. women live longer than men.

18、It was Friday, the day of the field trip on which Miss Joan would take her class to pick apples.

Miss Joan enjoyed picking apples with her students. She smiled as she led her students to the bus that would take them to the Greenly Apple Orchard(果園).

The bus ride was bumpy(顛簸的) and the kids were a little noisy, but still Miss Joan was smiling.

The bus stopped in front of the Greenly Apple Orchard and the class got off quickly and quietly. Miss Joan made sure everyone was there. “What a glorious, sunny, apple picking day,” Miss Joan announced with her grandest smile.

Mr. Greenly was there to greet them. “Let’s see, there are eighteen children and two adults at three dollars each. That will be sixty dollars, please.”

Miss Joan held up the brochure in her hand. “It says that the price is two dollars each,” she pointed out. “That’s what I collected from everyone.”

“We’ve had to raise the price,” Mr. Greenly stated.

“You sent me this brochure after we made our reservation,” Miss Joan complained, “and it says two dollars!”

“Miss Joan, if you look at the bottom of this brochure,” Mr. Greenly said, “you’ll notice very important statement.”

Sure enough, in very tiny letters, it said, “Prices are subject to change without notice.”

Miss Joan was determined to keep her good mood. She took a twenty dollars bill out of her own purse and handed it to Mr. Greenly with the forty dollars she had in an envelope.

“Now children, do you all have your baskets?” Miss Joan called out. “Remember, each of you can pick as many apples as possible.”

Mr. Greenly said, “You can’t pick as many apples as possible.”

“I beg your pardon!” Miss Joan was not smiling now. “The brochure says, ‘ALL YOU CAN PICK’!”

Mr. Greenly pointed to the tiniest letters Miss Joan had ever almost seen. It also says, “Terms(條款) and conditions of group reservations are subject to change without notice.”

17、                             A

In Washington D.C., 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a very special address. It is the address of the White House, the home of the president of the United States.

Originally the White House was gray and was called the presidential Palace. It was built from 1792 to 1800. At this time, the city of Washington itself was being built. It was to be the nation’s new capital city. George Washington, the first president, and Pierre Charles L'Enfant, a French engineer, chose the place for the new city. L'Enfant then planned the city. The president's home was an important part of the plan.

A contest was held to pick a design for the president's home. An architect named James Hoban won. He designed a large three-story house of gray stone.

President Washington never lived in the Presidential Palace. The first president to live there was John Adams, the second president of the United States, and his wife Mrs.Adams did not really like her new house. In her letters, she often complained about the cold. Fifty fireplaces were not enough to keep the house warm.

In 1812 the United States and Britain went to war. In 1814 the British invaded Washington. They burned many buildings, including the Presidential Palace.

After the war James Hoban, the original architect, partially rebuilt the president’s home. To cover the marks of the fire, the building was painted white. Before long it became known as the White House.

The White House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. Every year more than 1.5 million visitors go through the five rooms that are open to the public.
