5、America’s No.1 health problem? A report published by the American Institute of Stress claims the biggest threat to health today is neither cancer nor AIDS. The report says: “It has been estimated that 75―90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems.”

It is no exaggeration to say that people today are being attacked by stress. According to the National Consumers League, “Work is the top source of stress for adults who have problems and stress in their lives (39%), followed by family (30%). Other sources include health (10%), concern about the economy (9%) and concern about international conflict and terrorism (4%).”

However, stress is hardly unique to the United States. A British survey in 2005 estimated that “over half a million individuals in Britain believed in 2004 that they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill.” As a result of “work-related stress, depression or anxiety,” there are “an estimated thirteen and a half million reported lost working days per year in Britain.”

The picture is no less bleak(荒涼的) in mainland Europe. According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, “work-related stress has been shown to affect millions of European workers across all types of employment sectors.” One survey revealed that there are “about 41 million workers affected by work-related stress each year.”

What about Asia? A report issued by a conference held in Tokyo concluded: “Job stress is a common concern among many countries in the world, both developing and industrialized countries.” The report observed that “several countries in East Asia, including China and Korea, have rapidly industrialized and economically grown. These countries now have a lot of concerns on job stress and its harmful effects on workers’ health.”

4、Ladji Doucoure of France beat Olympic champion Liu Xiang of China in the final meters to claim the title of the men's 110 meters hurdles at the 10th world championships in Helsinki on Friday.

Doucoure, who led the world this season with 12.97 seconds, overtook the Chinese to win the race in 13.07 seconds. Liu was second in 13.08. Four-time world champion Allen Johnson of the United States took the third in 13.10.

The 22-year-old Doucoure said after the race, “I can not tell you just how long I have been dreaming of this. This victory is the result of a lot of hard work, and also a lot of support from people who have believed in me. I had a bad start, touched a few hurdles, but after the 4th hurdle I picked up my race and went straight to the finish line.”

Liu, who won the Olympic gold with a world record-tying time of 12.91 seconds, said: “I'm very satisfied with the second place. The result could have been worse. I felt quite well and did my best. I'm not tired, I had some clearance problems at the start, so I should practice that some more.

Finally, I didn't lose by much, only by a little bit, but I did think I could win it.”

Liu's coach Sun Haiping said on Friday he was content with Liu's performance.

“Liu Xiang was quite good during his reaction period, but he was a little bit slow in the middle and he finally caught up during the last two hurdles,” Sun told Xinhua.

Although satisfied with the silver medal and the clocking of 13.08 seconds, Sun said Liu might have added the world title to the Olympic championship if Liu had run the track neighboring his major rivals (對(duì)手) of Doucoure Ladji or Allen Johnson.

“If he had run next to Ladji Doucoure or Allen Johnson, Liu could have kept pace with them and then sprinted (疾跑) at the last stage. In this case, he could grab the gold,” said Sun, who has become a household name for coaching China's first men's Olympic champion in the track.

3、YOU CAN HELP!

Everyone was born with his own built-in burglar(竊賊) alarm. It’s called the sense of sight and sound. Unfortunately, many of us go around with the alarm switched off.

We don’t see the stranger wandering outside the house next door.

We don’t notice the sounds from the flat upstairs.

(Weren’t they supposed to be on holiday?)

The police can only do so much to prevent crime. There never can be enough of them to guard every home in every town. So they need your help in fighting with the burglars, and the car thieves.

Not, of course, by setting out to have a go every time you see something suspicious(可疑的). It’ll always be the job of the police to arrest criminals. But by acting as a line of communication between them and your community. For example, you probably know far more about your immediate neighborhoods than the police ever could. A stranger in someone’s garden would probably be far more obvious to you than it would to even the local police, if, of course, you were on the look-out.

That’s the whole idea behind the Neighborhood Watch schemes, springing up around the country to create a spirit of watchfulness within a community, anything suspicious being reported to the police.

It’s early days yet, but results so far are very encouraging. The crime figures are already dropping in many of the areas running the scheme. And all due to people like you.

60. The underlined word “them” refers to ______.

A. criminals         B. the police         C. neighbours        D. strangers

61. The advertisement points out that many people ______.

A. are not ready to help the police

B. are not as watchful as they could be

C. don’t look after their gardens well

D. don’t tell their neighbors about their holidays

62. One of the ways we could help prevent crime is to ______.

A. turn on the alarm system in our home

B. try to stop criminals from escaping

C. look out for people behaving suspiciously

D. inform the police if we hear noises upstairs

63. The purpose of the advertisement is to _______ in their neighborhood.

A. ask people to join the police force

B. advise people how to protect their homes

C. warn people about the increasing risk of crime

D. encourage people to be on watch for possible crime

2、We’ve all heard the phrase “l(fā)ove is patient”, but one couple in Michigan, took this phrase to a whole new level. On Monday, February 13, Willard Mason sat down to talk about his relationship with the love he lost more than 60 years ago. Good fortune and fate recently helped the couple reunite.
