6、I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would better like to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. Weren’t it for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village. But how realistic is the dream?
Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in huge tower blocks, noisy, dirty, cold and unfeeling . The sense of belonging to a community tends(傾向)to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats. Strangely enough, whereas in the past the inhabitants(居民)of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other.
Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated(隔離)existence because a sense of community generally ties the inhabitants of small villages together. But country life has disadvantages too. It is true that you are cut off from the exciting and important events that take place in cities. There’s little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on and expedition to the nearest large town. The city-people who leave for the country are often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quietness.
What, then, of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring “morning” to the locals as they pass by? I’m eager for the idea, but you see there’s my cat, Toby. I’m not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass. I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty males down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric fire any evening.

5、Nothing lives forever. Is that right ?Wrong. It seems hard to believe that there are some animals that do not die. They are very simple creatures , too small to be seen without the help of a microscope. While most animals, including human beings, have billions of cells in their bodies , these little death defiers have only one. Each cell lives for a certain length of time, and then it splits to form two new animals. The adult animal turn itself into two babies .All of the new cells finally divide, but none die unless they are killed by accident or disease.
There are other cells that avoid being old. Cells from old mice have been moved into young mice over and over again, each time the body they are in wears out . In their new bodies the old cells seem to begin life over again. They divide and grow just like young cells.
Is there any way to discover the secret of these cells’ youth and apply it to human being? Not yet. But scientists are still searching, and they may be closer than ever to finding an answer. Of course , some ways to increase our chance of living longer. Like good food and exercise, have been known for years. Progress against killer disease has already raised the human life to more than seventy years, compared with less than fifty years a century ago. Now scientists are studying other ways to fight against death. They will never give up their efforts until they win their final success.

A. find out how these tiny animals fight against diseases
B. discover the relations between human bodies and these animals
C. learn how these cells can split into new cells

71. What is the writer’s attitude towards the possibility for human beings to live longer?
A. Confident B. Doubtful C. Uncertain D. Respectful

3、Lipstick plays an important role in attraction and can even protect the lips from drying out in harsh weather. No wonder it’s the most important thing in a women’s cosmetics(化妝品)bag.
Colouring the lips is certainly not a new idea. It was practiced as early as 3500 BC.
In the past , a natural dye was used to paint lips. It was not until the 17th century that lipstick manufacturing really took off. The lipstick was made of mixtures that included pig fat and red sandalwood . It was kept in tiny pots and applied with a colouring stick.
Lipstick was invented and first presented by Parisian perfumeries(香料商)in Amsterdam. But these “l(fā)ittle red sausages”were less than practical. They were wrapped in silk paper and the ends had to be broken off before each use. They also did not come cheap.
Over the years the sticks became less expensive and new colours were developed. But it was not until 1950 that lipstick accidentally was reinvented―this time by the Americans.
Today there are so many types of lipsticks and shades that it is hard to keep track of them. Faced with many choices in the cosmetic departments, it is easy to forget that there is a whole science to manufacturing them.
The basic materials are colours, oils and waxes. But they can contain up to 30 different materials. Lipstick manufactures have to achieve a careful balance.“You need a thicker oil to make the lipstick last longer, but a thinner one to make it easy to apply,”says Cornelia Riedel, product developer at Nivea Beaute in Hamburg.
Different oils also provide protection for lips, preventing them from drying up. The waxes used in lipsticks must strike the right balance between strength and elasticity(彈性).And up to nine different colouring matters could be needed to find the right shade.
No one today need fear dangerous materials in lipsticks. A study by a leading German Consumer Organization found dangerous materials such as lead or cadmium, are hardly a problem any more―even in the cheapest products.
Today, the question is whether to choose between a conventional lipstick or a newer, long-lasting variety.
