6、In the U.S, the public has tended to believe that all motorcycles are ridden by wild, irresponsible lawless young men.
There are several things about motorcycling that the average citizen dislikes.A cyclist’s appearance has something to do with this dislike.Motorcyclists frequently look dirty ; in fact, they are dirty. On the road there is little to protect them from mud, crushed insects and bird droppings.
For practical reasons there are often dressed in old clothing which looks much less respectable than the clothing of people who ride in cars. For the same reason motorcyclists usually wear dark colors.Perhaps this helps to explain why they are sometimes suspected of having evil natures. In old plays of long ago, evil characters usually wore black. In cowboy movies the “bad guys” usually wear black hats while the “good guys” wear lighter colors.Something else about their appearance makes an unfavorable impression. In their practical, protective clothing they are very much like the men on military motorcycles in the movies of World War II ----- cruel enemies who roared into peaceful villages filling people’s heats with fear.
Probably the machine itself also produces anger and fear.Motorcycles are noisy ,though some big trucks are even nosier. But trucks are big and carry heavy loads; they are accepted (if not really welcomed)because they perform a needed service, making America move.Motorcycles, on the other hand, make all unpleasant noise just to give their riders pleasure. That is what is commonly thought. In the woods motorcycles frighten animals.Roaring along quiet streets , they wake sleeping families and make babies cry.
Of course the danger of motorcycling also helps account for many people’s love opinion of the sport. Its defenders, however, claim that careful cyclists are in less danger than commonly belived.
A cyclist must drive as if everybody around him wanted to kill him.He must pay careful attention to his driving. From that point of view, a man on a motorcycle is safer than a man in a car.

5、No more batteries, no more characters and no more wires. This is the future promised by “wireless power”, a means of broadcasting electricity through the air to laptops, Pods and other gadgets(小器具)without the need for cables and sockets(插座).
Wireless lighting, audio speakers and digital picture frames are expected to be among the first commercial products exhibited in Las Vegas this week at the International Constumer Electronics Show, the world’s biggest tradeshow.
Experts believe this is just the beginning and eventually wireless electricity could do for battery life what WiFi (局域網(wǎng))did for the Internet. In a world without wires, laptop users in cafes and airport terminals(終點(diǎn)站)would be inside an “electricity hotspot” and no longer have to_delve an awkward located socket.
“You’d be able to buy a desk that charged any gadget placed on it, or power any PC you put on top,” said James Holland , editor of gadgets website Electric pig.co.uk “If each room had wireless power, you’d know that once you walked through the front door your mobile would start charging up---- even while still in your bag or pocket. You’d never need to hunt for the right charger again.”
Among the companies showcasing the ambitious technology at CES is Power Beam. Its system turns electricity an invisible laser, then beams (傳播)it, as heat, across the room to a solar cell that converts it back into electricity.
David Graham ,the co-founder of Power Beam, said: “We’re going to delete the word ‘recharge’ from the English dictionary. If your cell phone is recharging on your desk all day, you won’t be thinking about it.” The Silicon Valley company can currently use a laser to generate about 1.5 watts power to a solar cell 10 meters away. This would be enough to power an electronic speaker or small LED(二極管) lights, but not enough to operate a laptop, which requires about 30 to 50 watts. However, Graham said that the technology could comfortably be scaled up (提高).
Power Beam insists its laser does not lead to a risk to users’ health because it is simply moving heat from one place to another.Graham said that, if someone walked throe the beam, it would shut down within a thousandth of second, then restart once the path is clear. The technology also promises because it would only power products when needed.

A.how the system works
B.how the electricity be converted into heat
C.the function of the ambitious technology
D.the electricity is converted through heat

4、Night after night, she came to tuck me in, even long after childhood years.Following her longstanding custom, she’d lean down and push my long hair out of the way ,then kiss my forehead.
I don’t remember when it first started annoying me--- her hands pushing my hair that way.
But it did annoy me, for they felt work-worn and against my young skin. Finally, one night, I shouted out at her, “Don’t do that anymore---- your hands are too rough!” She didn’t say anything in reply. But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar expression of her love.
Time after time, with the passing years, my thoughts returned to that night. By then I missed my mother’s hands, missed her goodnight kiss on my forehead.Sometimes the incident seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always it lurked(潛藏), in the back of my mind.
Well, the years have passed, and I’m not a little girl anymore.Mom is in her mid-seventies, and those hands I once thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family. She’s been our doctor , reaching into a medicine cabinet (醫(yī)藥箱) for the remedy (藥物)to calm a young girl’s stomach or soothe (安慰) the boy’s scraped (擦傷的)knee. She cooks the best fried chicken in the world…gets stains out of blue jeans like I never could…
Now, my own children are grown and gone. Mom no longer has Dad, and on special occasions, I find myself drawn next door to spend the night with her.So it was late on Thanksgiving Eve, as I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a familiar hand hesitantly run across my face to brush the hair from my forehead. Then a kiss, ever so gently, touched my brow.(額頭)
In my memory, for the thousandth time, I recalled the night my young voice complained, “Don’t do that anymore---your hands are too rough!” Catching Mom’s hand in hand ,I blurted (沖口說出)out how sorry I was for that night.I thought she’d remember, as I did.But Mom didn’t know what I was talking about. She had forgotten ---and forgiven----long ago.

3、I was dirty, smelly, hungry and somewhere beneath all that, suntanned(皮膚曬黑).It was the end of an Inter-Rail holiday. My body couldn’t take any more punishment. My mind couldn’t deal with any more foreign timetables, currencies or languages.
“Never again,” I said, as I stepped onto home ground.I said exactly the same thing the following year. And the next, all I had to do was buy one train ticket and, because I was under twenty-five years old, I could spend a whole month going anywhere I wanted in Europe.Ordinary beds are never the same once you’ve learnt to sleep in the passage of a train, the rhythm rocking you into a deep sleep.
Carrying all your possessions on your back in a rucksack(背包)makes you have a very basic approach to travel, and encourages incredible wastefulness that can lead to burning socks that have become too anti-social (不合群的),and getting rid of books when finished. On the other hand, this way of looking at life is entirely in the spirit of Inter-Rail, for common sense and reasoning can be thrown out of the window along with the paperback book and the socks. All it takes to achieve this carefree attitude is one of those tickets in your hand.
Any system that enables young people to travel through countries at a rate of more than one a day must be pretty social. On that first trip, my friends and I were at first unware of the possibilities of this type of train ticket, thinking it was just an inexpensive way of getting to and from our chosen camp-site in southern France. But the idea of non-stop travel proved too attractive, for there was always just one more country over the border, always that little bit further to go.And what did the extra miles cost us? Nothing.
We were not completely uninterested in culture. But this was a first holiday without parents, as it was for most other Inter-Railers, and in organizing our own timetable we left out everything except the most viable sights. This was the chance to escape the guided tour, an opportunity to do something different.I took great pride in the fact that, in many places, all I could be bothered to see was the view from the station. We were just there to get by, and to have good time doing so.In this we were not different from most of the other Inter-Railers with whom we shared passage floors, food and water, money and music.
The excitement of travel comes from the sudden reality of somewhere that was previously just a name.It is as if the city in which you arrive never actually existed until the train pulsing at the station and you are able to see __it__ with your own tried eyes for the first time.
1.At the end of his first trip , the writer said “ Never again” because_____
A.he fell ill.
B.he disliked trains
C.he was tired from the journey
D.he had lost money
2.What does the writer mean by “ this way of looking at life” in Paragraph3?
A.Worrying about your clothes
B.Throwing unwanted things away.
C.Behaving in an anti-social way
D.Looking after your possessions
3.Why did the writer originally buy an Inter-Rail ticket?
A.To get to one place cheaply.
B.To meet other young people.
C.To see a lot of famous places
D.To go on a tour of Europe.
4.What the writer liked about traveling without his parents was that______.
A. he could see more interesting places
B.he could spend more time sightseeing
C.he could stay away from home longer
D.he could make his own decisions
5.What does the underlined word “it” in the last sentence of Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.A name B.The city C.The train D.The station

39、Every person leaves a footprint. That’s what I learnt when I started to work as a private investigator 10 years ago. People pay restaurant bills with their bank card, check into hotels or travel around. In every case, they leave a trace. And because of this, I’m able to track them down even when they don’t want to be found.
The first thing I do when I want to find out where someone is staying is to go to the neighbourhood where he used to live. It’s human nature to tell stories — which is why neighbours will tell me all they know when I ring at their houses. Sometimes, someone even talks about his friend’s dishonesty. Then I produce a pattern of my subject’s life: if he likes to have a holiday in Spain or in Italy, if he prefers two or three-star hotels and where he might hide his assets (資產(chǎn)). When I’ve got this life pattern, I start my research.
Nine times out of 10, I find the people I’m looking for. I once investigated a lorry supplier who owed ?500,000 to a subcontractor (分包商). The subcontractor wanted to find out if it was worth bringing charges against the supplier. I found out the supplier had moved assets to his son, who founded a new company offering the same product. It was all done within the law. There was no money to be got from that operation.
However, I asked the son if I could speak to his father and he told me that his parent was on a long holiday in Spain and wouldn’t be back for a while. It didn’t take me long to find out that the father wasn’t in Spain.
I went back to the son and this time he told me that his father might in Bulgaria, and I found him doing winter sports in a beautiful mountain area. He was living in a big house on a large piece of land he had bought for ,000. This was exactly the kind of asset my customer was looking for.
1.We learn from the text that a private investigator is one who .
A.follows people and reports on what they do
B.helps people start businesses
C.gives advice to people about the law
D.settles arguments between companies
2.Why does the author visit the place where his subject used to stay?
A.To find out his hidden assets. B.To gather information about him.
C.To discover why he is dishonest. D.To find out where he spends his holiday.
3.The lorry supplier moved his assets to his son in order to ________
A.pass on his debt to his son
B.double the business of his company
C.let his son take over his lorry business
D.prevent paying back the money he owed
4.We may infer from the text that the subcontractor might _________
A.bring charges against the lorry supplier’s son
B.give up hope of settling the debt
C.sell the big house in Bulgaria
D.get his money back
