By Thanksgiving, she had collected only $49. I said, “You 2 have your pick from my bicycle 3 .” “Thanks, Daddy. But your bikes are so old.” She was right. All my girls’ bikes were 1950s models, not the kind a kid today would 4 choose.

6、With its budget of $80 million , John Woo as director, and an all-star cast, Red Cliff is the most expensive and ambitious Asian-financed film ever. Last week I saw the release of the second part, and boy oh boy does it shows.

But watching the film as a foreigner I felt I was missing out on something. Not knowing my Cao Cao's from my Zhou Yu's, I was not even sure whom I wanted to win. Certainly after the opening scene, in which Cao Cao is seen watching a game of Cuju, an ancient Chinese variation of football, I knew who had my support. After all, any man who enjoys his football is someone after my own heart. But after Cao Cao resorted to some evilness strategies against his enemies in the south, I wasn't so sure he was the man I should be rooting for.

And there is a lot more to Red Cliff 2 than just extravagant battle scenes. The film does not take itself too seriously. Conversations between leaders are littered with one-liners, many of which had the audience in laughter. There is even enough to keep fans of more romantic entertainment happy too. This includes a charming relationship between a southern spy and an innocent northern soldier. The characters' interaction provides some genuinely heart-warming moments in the middle of the battle.

Clocking in at around two hours, the film certainly does justice to the history story. When I walked out the cinema, I felt as drained as Cao Cao's soldiers must have 1,800 years ago.

1.By expressing “boy oh boy” in the first paragraph, the author seems to show that _______.

A.the film characters are like boys who are childish.

5、People in China, as in other parts of the world, are waiting to see how U.S. President-elect Barack Obama will deal with global problems such as the current economic slowdown once he takes office. As Sam Beattie reports from Beijing, there is widespread hope for closer U.S.-Chinese cooperation.

For many students in Beijing, Mr. Obama symbolizes all that is possible in the United States. He's a popular winner here, seen as a self-made man who has made it to the top.

"I think he is very charming, and a president who can create a new era," said Zhang Wei, a university student. "I like him very much and most of my friends do too." Ni Weibo, another university student, agrees. "Sino-U.S. relations still need more cooperation," she said. "I think he will help take it to a new era."

China's President Hu Jintao congratulated Mr. Obama within hours of his victory, saying he hoped bilateral ties could be made stronger.

Political analysts here say China will be looking for the incoming president to avoid contentious issues such as Taiwan's independence, human rights and Tibet.

Instead, they say Beijing would like Mr. Obama to focus on solving the global economic crisis, and to help China's slowing economy by opening up U.S. markets.

But trade relations might be a sticking point, says Renmin University's Professor of International Studies, Shi Yinhong.

He warns, "There is a possibility that President Obama will take some protectionist measures which China will not accept, then trade disputes could develop to a degree that we have not seen ever before."

Despite making the headlines, Mr. Obama faces some tough challenges in managing the U.S. relationship with China. China is now a stronger and more confident country than the China his predecessors dealt with. And in this time of economic uncertainty, analysts say it's a country with which Mr. Obama will want to maintain a good relationship.

4、“Can I see my baby?” asked the happy new mother. The bundle (嬰兒包) was placed in her arms and when she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped—the baby had been born without ears. Time, however, proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect except his appearance.

One day when he rushed home from school and threw himself into his mother’s arms, he cried out bitterly, “A boy, a big boy … called me—a freak.” She sighed, knowing that his life was to be endless of heartbreaks.

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift for literature and music.

The boy’s father had a talk with the family doctor. Could nothing be done? “I believe we could graft(移植) on a pair of outer ears, if they could be donated,” the doctor decided. So the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man. Two years went by. Then, “You’re going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret.” said the father.

The operation was a brilliant success. His talents blossomed into genius. School and college became a series of successes. Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. “But I must know!” he urged his father. “Who gave so much for me? I could never do enough for him.”

“I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know not yet.” The years kept the secret, but the day did come … one of the darkest days that ever pass through a son.      A.slow-acting person                            B.ugly-looking child

3、The regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana(大麻).That is the claim of psychologists have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking them for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to ten points off the user’s IQ.

This rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have labeled (把……稱為)the fleeting phenomenon of enhanced stupidity as “infomania”.

The noticeable drop in IQ is believed to be the result of the constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the tasks in hand.

The brain also finds it hard to deal with keeping lots of tasks in motion at once, reducing its overall effectiveness. While modern technology can have huge benefits, excessive(過度的)use can be damaging not only to a person’s mind, but to his or her social life.

Eighty volunteers took part in clinical trials on IQ damage and 1,100 adults were interviewed.

More than six in ten people polled admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so that they examined work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. Half said that they always responded immediately to an e-mail and one in five would interrupt a meeting to do so.

Furthermore, infomania is having a negative effect on work colleagues, increasing stress and disagreeing feelings. Nine out of ten polled thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude. Yet one in three Britons believed that it was not only acceptable, but actually diligent and efficient to do so.

1.What does the underlined part mean?

A.A person’s IQ drops ten points if he or she always checks electronic messages.

B.The person who has a higher IQ enjoys checking electronic messages.

C.The person who has a lower IQ enjoys checking electronic messages.

D.A person’s IQ is ten points higher if he or she always checks electronic messages.

2.What happens to people with infomania?

A.People with infomania can only concentrate on their tasks in hand.

B.People with infomania are addicted to smoking marijuana.

C.People with infomania can’t respond to technology immediately.

D.People with infomania can’t concentrate on their tasks in hand.

3.From the passage, we can learn that

A.a(chǎn)bout 670 interviewees responded to an e-mail immediately

B.a(chǎn)bout 550 interviewees responded to an e-mail immediately

C.a(chǎn)bout 40 taking part in clinical trials on IQ were addicted to checking e-mails

D.a(chǎn)bout 16 taking part in clinical trials on IQ refused to answer e-mails immediately

4.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.The regular use of text messages and e-mails can be compared to smoking marijuana.

                                       B.Modern technology can damage a person’s mind.

C.The regular use of text messages and e-mails can harm your IQ.

39、Every person leaves a footprint. That’s what I learnt when I started to work as a private investigator 10 years ago. People pay restaurant bills with their bank card, check into hotels                or travel around. In every case, they leave a trace. And because of this, I’m able to track them down even when they don’t want to be found.

The first thing I do when I want to find out where someone is staying is to go to the neighbourhood where he used to live. It’s human nature to tell stories — which is why neighbours will tell me all they know when I ring at their houses. Sometimes, someone even talks about his friend’s dishonesty. Then I produce a pattern of my subject’s life: if he likes to have a holiday in Spain or in Italy, if he prefers two or three-star hotels and where he might hide his assets (資產(chǎn)). When I’ve got this life pattern, I start my research.

Nine times out of 10, I find the people I’m looking for. I once investigated a lorry supplier who owed ?500,000 to a subcontractor (分包商). The subcontractor wanted to find out if it was worth bringing charges against the supplier. I found out the supplier had moved assets to his son, who founded a new company offering the same product. It was all done within the law. There was no money to be got from that operation.

However, I asked the son if I could speak to his father and he told me that his parent was on a long holiday in Spain and wouldn’t be back for a while. It didn’t take me long to find out that the father wasn’t in Spain.

I went back to the son and this time he told me that his father might in Bulgaria, and I found him doing winter sports in a beautiful mountain area. He was living in a big house on a large piece of land he had bought for ,000. This was exactly the kind of asset my customer was looking for.

1.We learn from the text that a private investigator is one who         .

A.follows people and reports on what they do

  B.helps people start businesses

C.gives advice to people about the law

  D.settles arguments between companies

2.Why does the author visit the place where his subject used to stay?

A.To find out his hidden assets.          B.To gather information about him.

C.To discover why he is dishonest.       D.To find out where he spends his holiday.

3.The lorry supplier moved his assets to his son in order to ________

A.pass on his debt to his son

B.double the business of his company

C.let his son take over his lorry business

D.prevent paying back the money he owed

4.We may infer from the text that the subcontractor might _________

A.bring charges against the lorry supplier’s son

B.give up hope of settling the debt

C.sell the big house in Bulgaria

  D.get his money back
