【題目】Dear Dr. Manners,

My close friend seldom(很少)says “please”. She will say “Can you get me that bag? ”or “Move it over here! ”I have told her a lot of times that it is polite to use “please” and “thank you”, but she hardly remembers. I feel that she is ordering(命令)me around without “please”, and I always get annoyed.

We have been close friends for over 10 years, this has always been there. It seems that I can’t stand it any more. What should I do? Can you help me?

Sincerely,

Linda

Dear Linda,

When your friend does not use polite words, it seems that she is ordering you to do something. So you have every right(權(quán)利)to hate her behaviors.

Ask her why she doesn’t use “please” and “thank you”. Explain to her that it makes you uncomfortable. Also, you don’t want to do anything for her because she doesn’t seem kind or pleasant when she asks you to.

Your friend was probably never taught how to use “please” and “thank you” in normal conversation. So you can try to teach her that. Remember that it is difficult to find another close friend if you lose one.

Yours,

Dr. Manners

The Cost of Thinking

Though humans have many differences, they share several typical characteristics(特征),such as large brains and the ability to walk upright on two legs.

The first human characteristic is humans' large brains. Mammals(哺乳動物)weighing sixty kilos have an average(平均)brain size of 200 cm'. Modern man has a brain averaging 1,200~1,400 cm3. The larger, the betterUnluckily, that is not the case.

The bigger our brain isthe more energy is needed. It's not easy to carry around, especially when boxed inside a large skull(顱骨). It's even harder to provide energy. In modern manthe brain is about 2-3% of total body weight but it needs 25%of the body's energy when the body is at rest. But the brains of apes(類人猿)require only 8% of rest-time energy. How did early humans pay for their large brains?Firstly, they spent more time in search of food. Secondly, their muscles(肌肉)grew smaller and weaker.

Another human characteristic is that we walk upright. Standing up,it's easier to find food or enemies. In addition, their arms that are unnecessary for moving around are freed for other purposes, like throwing stones or showing body languages. As a result, humans can perform very different tasks with their hands.

Yet walking upright has its downsides. The bones(骨頭)have to support a large skull. That causes backaches and painful necks. A large brain makes many advantages. It seems that these have made humans the most powerful animal on earth. But humans enjoyed all of these advantages for a full 2 million years during which they were weak, small and not important.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,按照句子結(jié)構(gòu)的語法性和上下文連貫的要求,在空格處填入一個適當(dāng)?shù)脑~或用括號中詞語的正確形式填空。將答案寫在答卷上

When holiday is coming to an end, how many of you have burned the midnight oil to finish your homework for several days? 1 the school year, when you get home from school, do you start working on your homework right away?

It is hard to be this responsible. A lot of people tend to put off difficult or 2 (challenge) tasks until they must be done. They are called procrastinators(拖延癥患者).

Procrastination is a common problem for 3 (million) of people, in fact, sometimes it just feels easier to wait till the last minute to do certain things. 4, this is usually not a good thing, as you have to work harder and faster. This means your work will 5 (probable) be of less quality.

I myself am a bit of a procrastinator. But most of the time, I try to finish my work earlier rather 6 later. It just makes more sense – if I finish my work now, I 7 (have) more time to relax or work on other projects later. Sometimes, it can be hard to promise 8get) started immediately. But once I do, the work will get done quickly and successfully.

It’s a 9(nature) thing for everyone to procrastinate from time to time. You’d better not beat 10 (you) up over it. After all, we still need time to relax and take a break from our busy lives. Just make sure you still get your homework done on time!
