根據(jù)前文“He was cycling a little slower than me and I decided to catch up with him”,我”決定追趕他,可知下文是開始越騎越快。

根據(jù)前文“I was cycling one day and noticed a person in front of me,about 250 meters ahead”和“I was only about 100 meters behind him”,剛開始相差250米,現(xiàn)在相差100米,可推測(cè)作者是用了幾分鐘時(shí)間縮短了差距。 故選A。

根據(jù)前文“so I really picked up the pace”,可知是逼迫我自己提速超越他,固定搭配push oneself,表示逼迫自己,所以用反身代詞myself。

根據(jù)上文“Finally,I caught up with him and passed him by”,最后作者超越了他,可知作者是贏了,所以用win。

passed 超過(guò),succeeded 成功,found 發(fā)現(xiàn),encouraged 鼓勵(lì)。根據(jù)前文“Finally,I caught up with him and passed him by”,可知此時(shí),作者已經(jīng)超過(guò)他了,所以在超過(guò)他之后。 故選A。

根據(jù)前文“I realized that …I had missed my turn”,可知,作者為了超越他而忽略了自己的目的地。

like 像;about關(guān)于;for 為了;from。根據(jù)前文講述作者的一段經(jīng)歷,和下文“We spend some time and energy chasing after them and we miss out on our own paths in life”而引出這種經(jīng)歷跟生活很相似,像一樣,用介詞like。故選A。

根據(jù)前文“We often focus on competing with others”,我們專注于跟其他人競(jìng)爭(zhēng),是為了證明我們比別人更好。

根據(jù)上文“We often focus on competing with others”,一直在表述的是太專注于和別人的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)的事情引發(fā)的一系列思考?

so所以,引導(dǎo)因果關(guān)系狀語(yǔ)從句; though 盡管,引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句;if如果,引導(dǎo)條件狀語(yǔ)從句, because因?yàn),引?dǎo)原因狀語(yǔ)從句。根據(jù)空格處前文“There will always be somebody ahead of us”和下文“stay focused and live a healthy life”,上下是因果關(guān)系,因?yàn)榭倳?huì)有人在我們的前面,所以我們只需集中精力過(guò)自己的健康生活,用引導(dǎo)因果關(guān)系的連詞so。故選A。

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(自然資源). Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people.

Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississipi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in Southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil(巴西). It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.

Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam(大壩) across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits(利益) of this natural resource.

Could you imagine a library where you borrow tools, appliances and sports gear(用具)? As a student, Sabrina could see the simple solution to a problem — in order to reduce waste and create a good effect on our environment, perhaps we should try sharing the things we have.

When she arrived in Brisbane four years ago, Sabrina had nothing with her but a suitcase full of clothes and a laptop. To start settling in, she asked friends if she could borrow the things she needed. Over time, as she started to have things of her own, she would _______ them to her friends in return.

She then came to the conclusion that we don’t need to own every single tool for every single_______, we just need to have them; we need a place where we can borrow what we need —in other words, a library. Sabrina decided to put her idea into action and so the Brisbane Tool Library was born.

Within two years the tool library has grown to over 225 members and today is run by a team of volunteers, mostly women, from 13 different nationalities. For a small membership fee, the library offers _______ from hand and power tools to sporting and camping gear, and kitchen equipment.

The library now has over 500 items in its storeroom with another 500 waiting to come. These are items that would otherwise have gone into landfill when their owners are _________ them sitting on the shelf — most are still new. “It doesn’t need to be like this,” says Sabrina. “It’s not just about reducing waste when things are at the _______ of their life cycle. And recycling is not enough. We need to rethink purchasing from the very beginning. We need some change.”

It’s a part of the rise of the share economy, where phone apps allow _______ to share rarely-used goods with people who need them. Libraries have been around for centuries offering public use of shared resources.

Why Alice is still wonderful

Have you ever read the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland? When British writer Lewis Carroll dropped Alice down the rabbit hole in 1865, he had no way of knowing what it would lead to (how popular it would be). The girl and her friends in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland have become well-known around the world. More than 100 versions of the book have been published. More than two dozen adaptations of the story have been made into movies. Millions of people are fascinated by the story and the characters in it.

Why have Alice and her friends kept us fascinated with them for so long? Why is the story so attractive?

One reason is that many people think the 7-year-old girl is our inner child. She is the child that we ever dreamed to be. Alice is the center of the book. She's brave, curious and always wants to move ahead to the next adventure. When she meets problems or even is attacked, she never once thinks of asking her parents for help. Instead, she tries to solve the problem in her own way. Maybe this can explain why the story is so welcomed by kids and teenagers. Because nowadays, they have been over protected by their parents and can't live in a world of their own. Alice is the child they really want to be.

Besides, the attractive setting in the book is another reason. The story is set in an imaginative world. Many things that don't exist in the real world can be found in the story. In the book, Alice can be 3 inches (7.6cm) tall and stand up on her tiptoes. She even finds a blue caterpillar smoking on a mushroom. Kids and teenagers are really attracted by the strange and imaginative world in the story.

The wonderland world makes us connect Alice's adventures with our own childhood. No matter how old you are, there is always a child living in your heart.

1Who is the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by?

2How many versions of the story have been published?

3Why is the story so attractive?

4Does the story make us think of our own childhood or adulthood?

5What's the passage mainly about?
