Idioms(成語) are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word you see or hear, you may not understand the idiom because you don't understand the culture behind it.

For example, if an American boy asks his mother what's for dinner tomorrow, she may say “I'll play it by ear”, that means she doesn't have plans for dinner and she will decide later. “Play by ear” used to mean playing music using the sheet music(活頁樂譜), but now people often use it when they're not talking about music.

There're many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be more vivid and colorful. English idioms are more common in spoken English. They can be difficult to remember sometimes. Next time when you hear somebody saying to you, “Give me a hand”, you don't necessarily reach out your hand to him/her, but you do need to be helpful. And when the situation is out of hand, you usually can do very little to manage all that. What about a green hand? It's not about the color of your hand! You're a green hand when you are very new at your work and don't have much experience. If you and your partner always work together hand in glove, you two certainly work together very well.

科目:初中英語 來源:2016屆廣東深圳文匯中學(xué)九年級上學(xué)期期中英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

One day a man found a cocoon(蠶) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly, a small opening appeared and the butterfly made its great effort(努力) to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.(那個(gè)蛹好象忘記了它該怎樣做, 也好象停止了掙扎).

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly would come out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.

The man was in his kindness, but he didn’t understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid(液體) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle(拼搏) to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been, we could never fly.

2.The man cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon in order to __________.

A. take the butterfly home

B. help the butterfly come out easily

C. kill the butterfly

D. stop the butterfly growing bigger

3.What do you think of the man?

A. Patient but cruel B. Careful and wise

C. Kind but unwise D. Brave and funny

4.What does the last paragraph (段落) tell us?

C. Every good deed will come back with good result.

D. The greatest happiness in the world is to help others.

5. What is the best title of the story?
