Aunt Linda's advice page

Peter

I vuent out with a group of friends yesterday. We saw a lady lying in the street. She looked very sick. My friends made jokes about her and Laughed. Though I wanted to help her , my friends told me not to. It was avufuL of them to Laugh at her , and I regret not saying anything. I feel ashamed of myself. What should I do in this situation?

Dear Peter,I believe you ve learnt an important lesson you 11 regret it if you don5t do the right thing at the right moment. Next time in the same situation, you should make up your own mind. You shouldn't listen to your friend. It was awful of them to laugh at a sick lady.

Julie

I have to share a room with my seven-year-old sister ,  and she's driving me mad!She Likes playing the piano when I'm  studying^, and she always takes my things without telling me. I try to keep the room tidy ^ but she always makes a mess. I love my sister, but sometimes she's so annoying! What should 1 do?

Dear Julie,You should talk to your sister more. Ask her to play the piano only when you’re not studying. Let her borrow your things only if she asks you first. Perhaps she just wants more attention from you. Try spending some time with her every day and you’ll both learn how to live happily with each other.

            D

Is your mobile phone directory (電話(huà)簿) full of phone numbers of people you don't really want to talk to? Do you go out with people from work or school more often than with your real friends? Do you say “yes” to invitations because you think you should, not because you want to? If you say yes to at least two of these questions, then perhaps you need to “edit your friends”.

Nowadays people like to spend a lot of time with people at work or classmates at school. The result is that we don't have enough time to see our real, close friends. As our lives get busier,it becomes more important to spend the little free time we have with people we really want to see, people we love and who really love us.

Who are the friends you need to edit? A few years ago,I read a book about how to get rid of unnecessary possessions (物品) .It said you should ask yourself about each thing you have: Is it useful? Do I like it? Do I feel better every time I look at it? If the answer is no to any of those questions, you should throw it away. Maybe we should ask similar questions about our friends. What kind of friends will you probably need to edit? Sometimes it's an old friend. Somebody who you used to have a lot in common with, but who, when you meet now,you have very little or nothing to say to. Or it might be a new friend who you get on quite well with, but who is taking up too much of your time. Next time one of these people calls you and suggests a meeting, think ”Do I really want to see this person?^ and if the answer is no,say no. In that way you^l have more time to spend with your real friends.

() 37. When do people need to edit their friends?

   A. They have moved to a different area.

   B. They have no time with their real friends.

   C. Some of their friends don't talk very much.

   D. Their friends are people from work or school.

() 38. What does the word “edit” in the passage mean?

   A. Examine and choose.    B. Believe and help.

   C. Miss and see.        D. Call and meet.

() 39. What does the writer want to tell us in paragraph 3 ?

   A. We should often throw some possessions.

   B. Most of our friends are not necessary at all.

   C. We shouldn't treat our friends as possessions.

   D. We should ask ourselves who our real friends are.

() 40. Where can you probably find this article?

   A. In a newspaper.        B. In a sports magazine.

   C. In a science fiction.    D. In a story book.
