【題目】 Have you ever read Charlotte's Web, a classic novel written by E. B. White? It is a story about a spider. He made friends with a pig and helped him.
Wilbur was an ill-fated(倒霉的)pig. When he was born, he was so small that the farmer Mr. Arable decided to end the pig's life. Fortunately, Wilbur met the lovely and kind-hearted farmer's daughter Fern, she stopped him from killing Wilbur and asked his father to give her the cute pig as her personal pet to feed in a barnyard(谷倉(cāng)場(chǎng)院).
Fern loved Wilbur more than anything. She loved to touch him gently, to feed him, to put him to bed. Wilbur grew day by day and made many friends in the barnyard. They are geese, cattle, sheep, a spider and so on. Of all these friends Wilbur's favourite is Charlotte, a beautiful grey spider.
As the days went by, Wilbur grew and grew. He ate three big meals a day. He spent long hours lying on his side, half asleep, dreaming pleasant dreams. He enjoyed good health and he gained a lot of weight. One day, the old sheep Samuel in the barnyard told Wilbur that he would be served as Christmas dinner this year. Wilbur turned to Charlotte for help. Day after day the spider waited, head-down, for an idea to come to her. Hour by hour she sat motionless, deep in thought Having promised Wilbur that she would save his life, she was decided to keep her promise. She had the idea of writing words extolling Wilbur's excellence, such as "a famous terrific pig" in her web. She makes the farmer believe that Wilbur is some kind of supernatural(神奇的)animal, too important to kill.
Thanks to Charlotte's efforts, Wilbur not only lived but also won a special prize at the fair. With the help of Charlotte, Wilbur became the only one pig to see the spring.
Unusually the author made a spider the heroine of the book. Many people are afraid of spiders. Charlotte did everything in her power to keep Wilbur alive, but Charlotte was so tired that she finally died. The novel showed how a strong friendship could last through the worst possible times.

【題目】閱讀短文,并按要求完成下列小題。
The aims of the students who come to school is to study. But to study requires a right way, or you waste either time or the money. The following are the ways of studying.
The best time for reading is morning. Because in the morning, the air is fresh and our minds are clear. For that reason, we can get good results.
In studying we must be patient. If we don't understand a text well, we must read it again. We should not read the next one till we have learned the first one well.
When we are studying, we must put our hearts into the book. We can not read absent-mindedly ( 心不在焉地 ) , or we can get nothing from the book while we are reading.
We must always ask “whys”. If it is not well understood, write it down and ask our teachers or parents, brothers or friends, in any possible way. We must know it completely and then our knowledge can be used well.
Though there are many ways for studying, however, the above mentioned will be quite enough if we can keep them in heart and do so.

【題目】 It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their ancestors had lived in the same way for centuries.
Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.
This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was to catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn't last long.
The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.
The villagers decided that they couldn't just wait to see the crops failing and the children have to use the money earned to buy pesticides (殺蟲(chóng)劑) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.
Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't been useless. They had been doing an important job-eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were destroying the crops and spreading diseases.
Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

【3】What might be the cause of the children's sickness?
A.The crops didn't do well.B.There were too many insects.
C.The visitors brought in diseases.D.The pesticides were overused.
【4】What can we infer from the last sentence of the passage?
A.Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country.
B.Health is more important than money.
C.The balance between man and nature is important.
D.Good old days will never be forgotten.

【題目】 Have you ever gone to a fast-food restaurant to eat and gotten a kid's meal that came with a toy? Sometimes those meals have different toys for boys and girls —maybe a truck for the boys and a toy bear for the girls. Who decides that boys like to play with trucks and girls like to play with stuffed animals? I know many boys who like stuffed animals and lots of girls who play with trucks. When we decide what someone will like or how they will act just because they are boys or girls, we are stereotyping(形成模式化觀念).
A stereotype is a group that we put people into. Our human brains do this all the time; it's one of the ways that our brain has learned to deal with the world. We see someone and put that person into a group—for example, the old or the young, a boy or a girl. Is that a bad thing? No, it's not.
One advantage of a stereotype is that it enables us to deal with situations rapidly because we may have had a similar experience before. The use of stereotypes is a major way in which we simplify our social world; since they cut down the amount of processing(i.e. thinking)we have to do when we meet a new person.
Although grouping itself isn't bad, it can be harmful sometimes. It makes us ignore differences between each single person, that is, we usually think all the people in one group are the same but that might not be true.
When we stereotype, we think of a group and give everyone in that group certain characteristics. For example, the fast food restaurant believed that all boys like to play with vehicles and all girls prefer toy animals. They did that based only on whether they were boys or girls.
Stereotypes are problems when beliefs that people have about groups are not necessarily true. Have you ever heard anyone say that "Men are better drivers than women"? Statements like this take a group of people and give all of them the same behaviors or characteristics. I know men who are good drivers, and I know women who are good drivers. It's not fair to judge all people in a group by a stereotype. We need to remember that everyone in the group is an individual who has different abilities, interests, strengths and behaviors.
【1】The example of different toys for boys and girls is mentioned to show that_________.
A.boys and girls prefer different toys
B.boys and girls are treated unfairly
C.people sometimes mix children's likes
D.people have fixed ideas on things
【2】Which of the following stereotypes is useful?
A.Making friends by his appearance.
B.Boys do better in science than girls.
C.Youth easily do unreasonable things.
D.Red signs on the road warn us of danger.
【3】The underlined word “ignore” in Paragraph 4 probably means _________.
A.fail to noticeB.fail to trustC.fail to searchD.fail to face
【4】What does the writer want to tell us about stereotyping?
A.Stereotyping is like a coin which has two sides.
B.It helps our brain learn to deal with similar situations.
C.Judging people by stereotyping them makes things hard.
D.Trying to learn about and form some kinds of them stereotypes.
