Our environment is getting worse and worse with the increase of the world population, which affects the environment in two ways. Firstly, the limited energy resources will be used up much faster. Secondly, the increasing population creates more pollution, another severe problem that needs to be solved. Both problems are long-term ones because actions taken now show their result slowly over many years. They are also urgent because delays in action can lead to great suffering and social problems. The question seems to be difficult to handle for most people. However ? a person can be a protector of environment in everyday life if he takes actions to save the environment right now. With the development of technology, cars make transportation easier and quicker than before ? but we can ’t ignore the disadvantages brought to us by more and more cars in use. For example,we are consuming gasoline, which is a non-renewable resource, and will soon be gone. Moreover, the exhausted gas from cars pollutes our air,and our health is therefore threatened by air pollution, which has a big potential effect on our daily life. So we can consider walking, taking buses, carpooling (合用汽車) ,instead of driving cars alone. This seems to be a very slow process that can ’ t be so effective if a single person takes it. But,when more and more people become aware of the importance and positively take it as their personal responsibilities ? the condition of the air will be improved to a great extent.

   A. complain about people’s slow actions to protect the environment

   B. advise people to take actions to protect the environment

   C. show himself to be an active environmental protector

   D. point out the bad effects of technologies in protecting the environment

() 4. Because of the serious pollution, people can consider .

Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the country and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a country ? it will tell you the potential (潛力) of that country. Today in America,if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choices would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock (搖滾樂) stars—the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are involved with drugs (毒品) and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However ? one should look for more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes. The second type of heroes for the American young people is the sports stars. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area—sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports stars is a bit of a mess. Drugs and drinking are usually a part of life of the sports stars. The third type of heroes is the TV or movie stars. These persons may have lots of acting talent and be quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad,and they should not be held up as a model for young people. Today? the rock stars, the sports stars, and the actors all have become the models of the young people in America. Really,do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor,a teacher,or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However ? they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone. What is really sad is that the young try to learn from their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited ( P艮定) only to the rock stars, the sports stars and the actors, the future does not look too bright.

() 1. From the passage ? we know that the American young people will not admire
