Nowadays, we can know time very easily. Even a little child may know the time. We always ask "What time is it?".

Then people can tell us the exact time. But before the invention of clocks, knowing the time was very difficult. One way that people told the time was by using sundials, but it was impossible to tell the time on cloudy days or at night.

The first mechanical(機械的) clock was invented in China by Su Sung in 1088. The first clock in Europe was invented at the end of the 13th century.

The first watch was invented in Italy in 1462. Early watches were different from today's in two main ways. First, they only had an hour hand. Second, you could not wear them on your wrist(手腕). You had to keep them in your pocket. That s why they were called "pocket clocks".

The first wrist watch came from Switzerland 328 years later after the first pocket clock came out. But nobody bought them. They did not become popular for a hundred years.

Digital clocks and watches came from the United States and they are the most popular inventions in timekeeping. Shops all over the world started to sell them in 1971.

分析第二段中“One way that people told the time was by using sundials, but it was impossible to tell the time on cloudy days or at night.”

根據(jù)第三段中“The first mechanical(機械的) clock was invented in China by Su Sung in 1088.” 故選A。

根據(jù)第三段中“The first mechanical clock was invented in China by Su Sung in 1088.”和第四段中“The first watch was invented in Italy in 1462.”

根據(jù)第五段中“The first wrist watch came from Switzerland 328 years later after the first pocket clock came out.”

American and British people both speak English of courseBut sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.

1 Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know”. Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.

Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings tooSome American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America.2 Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.

3In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England, you might say “Cheerio!.” In America, you might say “See you later”.

There are also some differences in grammarFor example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often leave out the helping verb.4

All these differences can be confusing if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different waysThis is what has happened to English.5Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.

A.It can also happen to other languages, such as French.

B.For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different.

C.They say “Have you a storybook?”

D.First of all, they sound very different.

E.Many expressions are also different in the two countries.

Many American schools are closed during the summer. Most children in the United States have a summer holiday for almost three months. This traditional school schedule was designed long ago when many Americans lived on farms. Children were needed at home during the summer to help their families with harvesting crops and feeding animals. Schools later continued the tradition, mostly because it was difficult to hold classes in the hot summer weather.

American schools began to do an experiment by changing this system in the early 1900s. One idea was for children to attend school all year round. But the idea didn't become popular until about twenty-five years ago. Studies done at the time showed that American students were not performing as well as students in other countries.

Students who attend year-round schools in the United States do not go to class every day. They spend the same number of days in class as other students do. But the time is organized differently. For example, some students attend school five days a week for nine weeks. Then they have three weeks off before going back to school for another nine weeks. In summer, they have a five-week holiday.

Supporters of year round schooling say it improves students’ learning. They say students in the traditional system often forget what they have learnt after a long summer holiday. They think that schools can offer special classes during short holidays for students who need extra help. They also think that it saves money, because the school buildings are used throughout the year.

People who oppose year-round schooling say the research has not showed that it can improve students’ learning. Families report problems in organizing activities and travel when their children in different schools have different holidays. Some parents want their children to have a long summer away from the pressures of school. People who start summer camps for children don’t agree with the idea. So do businessmen that employ teenagers in summer.
