【題目】 Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events—love, sadness, good times, and bad times. It tells reallife stories and sounds the way people really talk, as life becomes more complicated(復雜的)it is good to hear music about ordinary people.
Country music, sometimes called country western, comes from two lands of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the West. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars.
At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South. But during World War II, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps in the South. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.
Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada—in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1,200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty four hours a day. English stars sing it in British and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. All through the winter, the Esquimaux(愛斯基摩人) live in houses made of snow. These small houses are very clean and white when they are new. They can soon turn dirty, but pieces of fresh snow make them new again.
Sometimes the Esquimaux build their small houses with the wood that they find along the seaside. However, they aren't always so lucky. When they can't get wood, they use the snow. It is so cold that the snow becomes very hard, so the small houses are strong enough in the whole winter. The windows of these houses are not made of glass, but of ice.
When the warm weather comes, the houses become water slowly. The Esquimaux get wet as they lie in bed, and often catch a cold. They are glad to get away from the small snow houses and live in their tens during the summer.

【題目】 Why is music an important subject that every child should study?
First of all, music helps us when we are unhappy, and gives us pleasure when we are happy. There are many different types of music: slow and fast, serious and relaxing. We can choose the music to match our feelings. And second, music is fun. People enjoy playing drums (鼓) and using their energy!
Scientists say that music helps children with language learning. Singing simple songs is good for young children. Music improves the ear — and we know that children who have studied music can learn foreign languages more easily and pronounce (發(fā)音) them much better. Students who have learnt to play music are also better at maths. This is not surprising, as music is mathematical, with notes in order. Playing music with other people also teaches children to work together. People who can play musical instruments ( 樂 器 ) always have something they can do at a party. Older children who play in school orchestras (管弦樂隊) enjoy school more and do not drop out of school early.
You need a lot of practice to play an instrument, and it can be difficult to ask your child to spend hours at the piano or playing the guitar. So music practice should be a daily habit — for example, every day after school, but do not make the practice too long.
Parents should listen to their children playing and tell them that they enjoy it. Practice should also be fun. It is also a good idea to finish the practice with a piece of music the child likes, and so learning music will be a pleasant (愉快的) part of the day.

Jaden is a six-year-old boy. He experienced the unlucky things of life twice. First he lost his dad when he was four and his mom died unexpectedly in her sleep last month. Jaden's heart was broken. His parents' death hit him a lot.
But things always go towards a good side. A few weeks later, Jaden told his aunt that he was tired of seeing everyone sad all the time. He'd like to see more smiles around him. He hoped that the number of the smiles could reach 100.
Then he asked his aunt to buy him some little toys and take him to the center of the city. “I'm trying to make people smile,” said Jaden. At first, he was not sure if the people passing by would like to receive his toys. In fact, he was always successful and got close to his dream step by step, because no one could refuse such a little boy's giving and expecting.
“I'm keeping a count of 100 smiles,” said Jaden. When asked if he could make it, he answered, “I think I can.”

【題目】根據(jù)短文內容,選擇最佳答案。
It is most difficult for parents to decide whether to have a second child or not.
It is often heard that a single child is like to be a lonely child. There are no other children in the family for the child to talk or play with. An only child is not able to get along well with children of his age. Some parents regretted making the decisions to have only one child.
But the number of parents choosing to have only one child is increasing in many parts of the world. In the US, for example, more than14 percent of women between 18 and 34 plan to have just one child. The same can be seen in the UK. In Japan, the average number of children born per family had gone down to 1.42 by 1996.
For some single-child parents, especially who are busy working every day, time and energy seem to be overwhelming. They don't have enough time and energy to share with more children. For other people, money is their first consideration. Many couples in Japan choose not to have large families as the cost of supporting a child up to the age of 18 reaches around US$160,000.
