1 8-year-old boy made such great progress in English

2 was well worth expecting

3 of her age have difficulty pronouncing these words correctly

4 how many languages the book will be translated into

5 that it was forced to go into hiding

6 succeed in getting his parents to change their minds

7 to stay up late to go over the knowledge he has learnt

8 didn’t realize his mistakes until

18-year-old為形容詞性短語,作定語修飾boy,made great progress in在……方面取得巨大進(jìn)步,“so he won high praise.” 8-year-old boy made such great progress in English。

2be well worth doing sth. 此句是省略that的賓語從句,主句是一般過去時(shí),從而判斷從句的時(shí)態(tài)為一般過去時(shí),be動(dòng)詞用was,故答案為was well worth expecting。

3of her age 與她年齡一樣大;have difficulty (in) doing sth. 故答案為of her age have difficulty pronouncing these words correctly。

故答案為how many languages the book will be translated into。

5so…that… 以至于……”,be forced to do sth.被迫做某事,主句是一般過去時(shí),從而判斷出從句也用一般過去時(shí)來表達(dá),故答案為that it was forced to go into hiding。

6succeed in doing sth.成功做某事,change one’s mind改變主意,get sb. to do sth.使某人做某事,根據(jù)at last判斷,句子的時(shí)態(tài)為一般過去時(shí),故答案為succeed in getting his parents to change their minds。

7have no choice but to do sth.除了做某事外別無選擇,可以作為一個(gè)固定句式來使用,stay up late熬夜,go over the knowledge復(fù)習(xí)知識(shí),he has learntknowledge的定語,熬夜的目的是復(fù)習(xí)學(xué)過的知識(shí),動(dòng)詞不定式用作目的狀語。故答案為to stay up late to go over the knowledge he has learnt。

8not…until直到……才,根據(jù)“he was reminded.”

One day,I saw some children trying to catch butterflies. This made me think of my own childhood.

When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina,we lived near a forest, and every evening mockingbirds(知更鳥) would come to the trees and sing.I was so interested in watching birds.I planned to catch a bird and keep her in a cage so that I could hear her sing at any time.

I finally caught one.On the second day,the bird's mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby ate everything her mother brought her.I was glad to see this. The following morning when I went to see my mockingbird,I was surprised to find she was dead in the cage! How sad I was!

When Arthur Wayne,a famous ornithologist(鳥類學(xué)家),visited my father,he heard my crying and told me,“If a mother mockingbird finds her young baby in a cage, she will bring poisonous(有毒的) food to the baby. She thinks that it is better for her child to die than to live in a cage.”

Since then,I never caught any animals and put them in a cage. All living animals have a right(權(quán)利) to live free.

Twelve-year-old Leonardo was born in a poor family in Peru. He knew how to read but he had never seen a book in his life. So he asked the new priest (牧師) in his village to give him one. But there was no electricity. So Leonardo borrowed candles from the church and sat up all night reading it.

This made John Medcalf, the priest, really moved (感動(dòng)的). He also realized that people would love to read if given a chance. But he knew how difficult it was for Leonardo and those in his village to get books. And yet, no one can be taught to read and write without books. To make people in a poor area grow to love books, they have to be with them. So he thought the only way was to bring books to people.

But how could this be done? Mobile libraries or car libraries would be too expensive and difficult to continue in the hilly (多丘陵的) land of Peru. So what other methods could be used?

He got a new idea from the barefoot (赤腳) doctors of China. And that was how the barefoot librarians (圖書管理員) first appeared in the villages of northern Peru, almost thirty years ago.

At first, they were teachers of the village schools which these faraway libraries belonged to. But the teachers were not very interested in the job because it meant a lot of hard work. So, the elders in the village took on the job themselves.

Today, there are 600 village libraries across Peru. The barefoot librarians need to walk up to 15 hours a day with bags of books.

1From the first paragraph, we can know Leonardo _________.

A. had a lot of books

B. bought candles from others

C. enjoyed reading books

D. lived with the priest

2How do you like the priest John Medcalf?

A. Smart and kind.

B. Poor and impolite.

C. Brave and friendly.

D. Strong and cold.

3From the passage, we can know that _________.

A. the first church in Peru was set up by John Medcalf

B. car libraries used to be popular in Leonardo’s village

C. teachers were interested in bringing books to villagers

D. the barefoot librarians are important to village libraries

4What is this passage mainly about?

A. How people read in Peru.

B. How the barefoot librarians started in Peru.

C. How John Medcalf brought books to people.

D. How people collected books in Peru.
