【題目】 I left my hometown in London last year and now I have enjoyed working in this small city in China. Learning a foreign language opens you up to the culture and history of a country. So in order to know more about China, I started to learn Chinese.

But at times, I found myself in funny situations. When I greeted strangers in China, they began to talk a lot and very fast. They asked me questions about everything. But all I could do was to look at them with a blank face. I had no idea what they were talking about. Were they just being kind, funny or impolite? Many people want to make friends with me. But I am a bit upset when I find out the reason why they need a foreign friend. They say they want to practice their English. I don’t need friends like this. I like friends to share my feelings and ideas with.

However, the more Chinese I learn, the more similarities I find it has with English. In English, thick-skinned is to describe a person who doesn’t care for criticism (批評). I was surprised to find that houlianpi in Chinese means the same. And both languages share some common idioms (習(xí)語). For example, “l(fā)ook on with folded arms” means xiushoupangguan, and “burn the boats” is similar to pofuchenzhou.

I’m still on my journey to learn Chinese. I believe that sometimes you have the most fun on a journey.

【題目】 Cars make our lives more convenient. But they can also be a problem. For example, fossil fuel(化石燃料) cars mainly cause air pollution.

To improve the environment, many countries are developing electric vehicles (EVs, 電動車). Among them, China is taking a leading role and has created the world's largest EV market.

Last year, over 40 percent of the 753,000 EVs sold in the world were sold in China, more than twice as many as the number sold in the United States.

"Filling up a fossil fuel car with gas(汽油) is more expensive than charging (充電) an electric car" said Wu Hao, who bought an electric car this year.

However, there are still some problems. It can be hard to find charging piles(充電樁) and the cars can't go far before needing to be recharged.

Some of these problems are being solved. In 2014,China had 31,000 charging piles. Now China has the world's largest EV charging network, with more than 167, 000 charging piles in total.

Developing EVs is one of many efforts that China has made to cut down pressure on its environment after the government promised to stop increases in carbon dioxide emissions(二氧化碳排放量) by 2030.

【題目】Dear Emma

Your problem is like a circle. It is because you spend less time with them. The harder you study, the less time you have to spend with friends and the less friendly you look to your classmates. So you should spend more time with them.

Look at your classmates. Are there any people with whom you feel you have a lot in common or trust? You can make friends with them first. The advice is as follows:

First, smile at your classmates. Do this as often as you can, until your classmates become used to your smiles and smile back. Next, talk to your classmates. Do this between classes or during your lunch break. You may find it easier to start by talking to people when they are alone. Perhaps you could ask a classmate about your studies.

They are likely to respond (回應(yīng)) in a very positive way. People like to feel important and helpful.

There must be someone else in your class who is also quiet. It might be easier to try to talk with him or her. Your problem is mainly about confidence. Smile first, talk next and slowly you will make friends. The most important point is that: Unless you have more confidence, you can’t make as many friends as you want.

【題目】 Sydney Fredette has a lot things to deal with. Not only is she a high school student, but she has also set up her own organization, Beary Merry Christmas. She volunteers to serve poor kids and families in Orange County () in California, US.

To remember her best friend who died of cancer nearly 10 years ago, Fredette decided to serve those in Orange County who are less lucky than she is.

She began with the simple idea of collecting donated (捐贈的) BuildABears, the popular toy animal that is made by children themselves in the stores' workshops. Fredette then gave them as gifts to the homeless children in California during the holiday season.

With donations at more than 100 bears a year, Fredette and volunteers host activities every year, where volunteers give out not only the bears, but also clothing, meals and other things.

Not wanting to limit (限制) the giving to just the holiday months, Fredette now hosts other activities for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Halloween, providing the chance for her volunteer team to make a difference through the year.

“I love building relationships with the people I serve,” Fredette said. “The thanks they have, hearing their stories and seeing how happy they are, it's so cool.”

Future plans for Fredette include building a public food bank and providing a selfdevelopment class for students in her school who will soon attend college.

Heading to college herself in the autumn, Fredette is looking to stay local and continue to help out in her county. In fact, she was regarded as a “Dreamer & Doer” not long ago for her work in improving her community, along with 32 other high school students.

A.Because she wanted to help poor kids and families.

B.Because she wanted to look after the sick.

C.Because she wanted to thank her best friend.

2What can we learn about Beary Merry Christmas?

A.It holds one activity a year.B.It gives out other things besides bears.

【題目】 It is easy for many people to catch a cold in the springtime or fall. It makes us wonder if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can't they find a cure (治療) for the common cold? The answer is easy. There are actually different cold viruses (病毒) out there. ___You never know which one you will get, so there isn't a cure for each one.

When a virus attacks (攻擊) your body, your body works hard to get rid of (消除) it. You may feel very uncomfortable, ___but your wonderful body is doing what it can do to kill the cold. You may have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells (細(xì)胞).Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is eating the virus.

___不同的人做不同的事情來應(yīng)對感冒。In the United States and some other countries, for example, people might have chicken soup to help them to cure the cold. Some people take hot baths and drink warm water. Other people take medicine to stop different symptoms(癥狀)of colds.

There is one interesting thing to note.___some scientists say taking medicine when you have a cold is bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn't have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. ___如果你不吃藥,你得花一周來消除感冒,but if you do, you still need 7 days.
