【題目】 Research proves that nearly half of the cancers diagnosed(診斷) in the UK each year—over 130,000 in total— are caused by life choices that include smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things.

Tobacco(煙草) is the biggest factor, causing 23% for cases in men and 15.6% in women, says the Cancer Research UK report. Next comes a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in men’s diets, while for women it is being overweight. Lead author of the report, Professor Max Parkin, said: “Many people believe cancer is related to fate(命運) or ‘in the genes(基因)’, and that it depends on luck whether they get it or not. Looking at all the evidence, it is clear that around 40% of all cancers are caused by things we mostly have the power to change.”

For men, the best advice appears to be: stop smoking, eat more fruit and vegetables and cut down on how much alcohol you drink. For women, again, the best advice is to stop smoking, but also watch your weight.

In total, 14 lifestyle and environmental factors, such as where you live and the job you do, cause 134,000 cancers in the UK each year.

Some risk factors are well founded, such as smoking’s link with lung() cancer. But others are less well realized. For stomach cancer, a fifth of the risk comes from having too much salt in the diet, data suggests. Some cancers, like mouth and throat cancer, are caused almost mainly by lifestyle choices. But others, like gall bladder cancer(膽囊癌), are largely not related to lifestyle.

Public Health Minister, Anne Milton, said: “By making small changes you can cut your risk of serious health problems—giving up smoking, watching you drink, getting more exercise and keeping an eye on your weight.”

1The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refer to________.

A.changeB.lifestyleC.cancerD.weight

2According to Professor Parkin, he thinks that________.

A.cancers are caused because of genes

B.some cancers may be avoided mainly

C.most cancers are caused for no reason

D.men can keep an eye on their weight to avoid cancers

3According to this passage, stomach cancer can be brought on by________.

A.working overtimeB.taking in too much salt

C.lack of exerciseD.smoking too much

4Which of the following can be learnt from the passage?

A.Smoking is the only cause of lung cancer.

B.Drinking a small amount of wine is good for health.

C.Some cancers may not be caused by lifestyle choices.

D.About 134,000 people die of cancer in the UK each year.

【題目】 In today's world, sleep experts say that for a better night's rest, Americans should turn off their smartphones or iPads before sleeping. Such electronic products make the brain more active, and then influence people's sleep. But according to a latest survey, more than 90% of Americans usually use a computer or some other kinds of electronic products in the hour before bed.

Researchers found that man-made light from some electronic products at night might reduce the levels of the brain chemicals that help sleep. The researchers showed that sitting in the light from tablets clearly reduced the levels of the chemicals which manage our body clocks and play a great role in the sleep cycle.

In the study, the researchers let volunteers read, play games and watch movies on a tablet for different time while measuring how much light their eyes received. They found that sitting for two hours before a bright tablet at night reduced the levels of the chemicals by about 22%.

Studies of students using computers at night have got the similar results. And researchers said that might not only cause sleeplessness, but also increase the risk of obesity(肥胖癥), diabetes(糖尿病) and other diseases.

To be on the safe side, the researchers advise us to use computers less before bed, or turn down our screens low.

1What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Americans don't get enough sleep.B.Electronic products are very popular.

C.The brain becomes more active at night.D.Sleep experts never use smartphones.

2How many electronic products influence people's sleep?

A.By making our brains more tired.B.By making our bodies weak.

C.By reducing the levels of the brain chemicals that help us sleep.D.By changing our body clocks.

3What does the underlined word "that" refer to?

A.Making a survey about sleep.B.Using smartphones in the daytime.

C.Sitting in a bright room.D.Surfing the Internet at night.

4What do the researchers advise us to do to have a good sleep?

A.Learn to use smartphones or iPads.B.Watch some relaxing TV programs.

It seems that self-help books are topping best-seller lists more often these days. More people are turning to self-help books for advice on how to live their lives. Last year, sales of these books in the UK rose 20 percent, reaching a record high of 3 million, the Guardian reported.

Famous people or psychologists( 心理學(xué)家) wrote many of the self-help books. They teach you how to deal with problems in your life—for example, how to get along with your classmates, how to manage your time well and how to find happiness in your daily life.

But can these books really help us with our lives? People have lots of different opinions about this.

Julie Hall from London is a big fan of self-help books. After she read more than 300 of them, she set up her own self-help website. Her site helps women succeed in the business world. “They(self-help books) can give you the courage to do whatever you want to do,” she told the Independent.

However, recent research by the University of Montreal in Canada might not agree with that. Researchers surveyed two groups of people—one of the group had read many self-help books, while the other hadn’t. They found that people in the group who had read more self-help books have more stress.

There is no single “quick fix” that can make our lives better. However, it’s always good to know that help is at hand when we need it.
