When the Audet family turns on the lights at Blue Farm, they are using electricity that comes from cows—cow manure (糞肥), to be specific.

Cows produce a lot of wastes. One cow can create 30 gallons of wastes each day. Now imagine t he output of over 1,000 cows at Blue Farm. That’s really a big amount.

When farmers clean their barns, they put the wastes in a big heap, and spread some of them on their fields for fertilizer(肥料). But now places like Blue Spruce Farm have a new way of using cow wastes. They use them to produce electricity.

Here’s how it works: A big machine moves back and forth cleaning the barn floor. “The cows aren’t bothered,” says Marie Audet. “They are animals of habit; they get used to it, and just lift one foot and then another to let it go by.”

The machine pushes the manure into a big 600-gallon tank like a small swimming pool. The tank is called a digester (化糞池) because what happens there is just like what happens inside a cow: Bacteria(細菌) get to work and continue to digest the manure.

Methane gas (甲烷、沼氣)in the atmosphere is known as a “greenhouse” gas because it keeps heat just like a greenhouse does, causing our planet to warm up. That’s an environmental concern. But the digester has a good result. Its gas is kept and used to power electric generators (發(fā)電機).

At Blue Farm, the generators make enough electricity to power 400 homes. The Audet family sells the extra electricity they can’t use themselves.

Have you had a headache during a test? Have you ever been so worried about something that you have a headache or even can’t sleep at night? If so, then you know what stress is. Stress is what you feel when you are worried about something. This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, sad, scared(恐懼的), or afraid—all of which can give you a stomach ache or a headache.

However, there are different kinds of stress. Some kinds of stress are good and others are bad. Good stress might happen when you’re called to answer questions in class or when you have to give a speech. This kind of stress can help you to get things better done. For example, you may do a better job in your test if the stress pushes you to prepare better before the test.

On the other hand, bad stress can happen if the stress lasts too long. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you’re having problems at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy every day. That kind of stress isn’t going to help you. And it can actually make you sick.

The best way to face the stress is to have a balanced life. Make sure you keep yourself in mind: Sleep, exercise, leisure(休閑), and food. If you get enough sleep and eat healthily, and if you exercise and leave time for fun, you’ll probably(可能) feel less stressed.

What do you usually do when a flying insect lands on your arm? You may blow it away. But what if that insect is a ladybug(瓢蟲)? It is possible that you would let it stay. What is it about ladybugs that we like?

Farmers once thought ladybugs were a good lucky sign.A ladybug in the field meant the crops would be successful and that the weather would be good. The farmers may have thought too highly of such a small bug,but in fact ladybugs do help out with the crops. They eat harmful insects.

Actually,it is not the adult ladybug that eats other insects. It's the baby ladybug. When the baby ladybugs hatch(孵化),they are very hungry and will eat mites, aphids, mealy bugs, green flies, and other crop-destroyers. In the 1800s,ladybugs were brought all the way from Australia to California and set free among orange trees that were dying from being eaten by insects. They completely saved all the trees.

Ladybugs go about their daily business without worrying much about anything.Very few birds or insects will eat a ladybug because it gives off a dangerous fluid(液體).Ladybugs also protect themselves by playing dead. They fall off leaves and never move until their attacker goes away.

So the next time you see a ladybug, think about what it may be doing.Maybe it is off to save an orange tree.Maybe its next move will be to roll off a leaf and play dead or stand up to a bird about 100 times its size.Maybe it's letting you know that the weather will be good tomorrow.Who knows? Ladybugs are special that way.

1.Ladybugs were brought from Australia to California in the 1800s to____.

A.a(chǎn)dd more ladybugs to area

B.report the weather for farmers

C.a(chǎn)ct as a lucky sign of good crops

D.save orange trees by eating insects

2.From the passage we know that ____.

A.it's the adult ladybug that eats most o{ the harmful insects

B.ladybugs often roll off a leaf and play dead to attack the birds

C.ladybugs can give off a dangerous fluid to protect themselves

D.the baby ladybug mainly eats mites, aphids, mealy bugs, and oranges

3.The underlined phrase "stand up to" most probably means ____.

A.watch B.support
