I thought the movie would be good for my English, but it turned out (結(jié)果是) that it was an Italian movie. After about an hour, I d2 to give up seeing the movie and eat my popcorn, I’ve never u3 why they give you so much popcorn. It tasted pretty good, though.

After a while I heard no more of the romantic-sounding Italians. I just heard the s4 of the popcorn crunching (咀嚼聲) between my teeth.. My thoughts started to wander (漫游). I remembered when I was in South Korea, I often used to watch Kojak on TV. He spoke perfect Korean—I was r5amazed. He seemed like a good friend to me u6I saw him again in New York, speaking perfect English instead of Korean. He didn’t even have a Korean accent (口音) and I f7like I had been cheated.

When our family moved to the United States six years ago, none of us spoke any English. Since we had begun to learn a few words, my mother suggested that we all would speak English at home. Everyone agreed, but our house became very q8 and we all seemed to avoid each other. We sat at the dinner table in s9, preferring not to speak the difficult language. Mother tried to say something in English, but it came out all w10 and we all burst into (爆發(fā)) laughter and decided to forget it! We have been speaking Korean at home ever since

【題目】The Amazing Brain

Sleep. It’s something we spend about a third of our lives doing, but do any of us really understand what it’s all about?

We all know based on our own experience that when we sleep, it clears our minds, and when we don’t sleep, it leaves our minds murky (昏沉沉的). But when we still haven’t understood why sleep has this amazing function for the mind.

Recently biologists have found that sleep may actually be a kind of design solution to some of the brain’s most basic needs, the way that brain meets the high demands and the narrow margins (范圍) that set it apart from all the other organs (器官) of the body. The brain has a large pool of clean, clear fluid (流體) called cerebrospinal fluid. Biologists call it the CSF. The CSF fills the space that surrounds the brain, and wastes from inside the brain make their way out to the CSF, which gets the waste into the blood. What was surprising to them was that the fluid on the outside of the brain didn’t stay on the outside. Instead, the CSF goes into and through the brain along the outsides of the blood vessels (血管), it was actually helping to clear away and clean the waste from the spaces between the brain’s cells (細(xì)胞). This only happens in the sleeping brain.

Recent research suggests that what’s happening is that when the brain is awake and is at its most busy, it puts off clearing away the waste from the spaces between its cells until later. When we go to sleep, it gets into a kind of cleaning mode to clear away the waste from the spaces between its cells.

We go to sleep every single night, but our brains never rest. While our body is still and our mind is off walking in dreams somewhere. Like our housework, it’s dirty and a thankless job, but it’s also important. In your house, if you stop cleaning your kitchen for a month, your home will become completely unlivable very quickly. But in he brain, the situation is much more serious because when it comes to cleaning the brain, it is the very health and function of the mind and the body that’s at stake. That is why understanding these very basic housekeeping functions of the brain today may prevent and treat diseases of the mind tomorrow.

1What does the underlined phrase “at stake” in the last paragraph mean?

A. in a healthy situation

B. in a dangerous situation

C. in an amazing situation

D. in an unlivable situation

2What can we learn from the passage?

A. Sleeping makes our brain feel murky.

B. The CSF can clean the waste in our brain.

C. Our brain can clean the waste at any time.

D. Sleeping makes our brain have a good rest.

3What is the main purpose of writing this passage?

A. To teach us how to have a good sleep.

B. To show the new research of our brain.

C. To introduce how CSF works in our brain.

D. To tell us the importance of sleeping.

【題目】I have lived in France for nine years, but I cannot walk down the street without being recognized(認(rèn)出) as an Englishman from 50 metres away before I open my mouth. Why?

In France, the quickest way to recognize an Englishman is that he'll be the one with the belly(肚子) and the shirt hanging out. Englishmen often wear shapeless black T-shirts, either too big or too small. However. Frenchmen are more formal in dressing. Their T-shirts have collars(領(lǐng)子). Shorts have buttons and zips rather than drawstrings(拉繩). Shoes look expensive.

Englishmen think of lunchtime as 1 p.m. but for Frenchmen it is 12 o'clock, one hour earlier. This may explain the sad looks if an Englishman arrives at a local restaurant at 1:30 p.m. At that time most restaurants don't have waiters. All the cooking and serving may be done by the boss and his wife. When you are shown to your table, just sit there and wait. Don't wave your hands to the waiters. Englishmen think guests should do something to make the waiters pay attention to them. But in France some bread and water will come first, then the waiters will take your order according to the rhythm(節(jié)奏) of the restaurant. Have enough patience!
