A black hole is a place in outer space with very strong gravity. Gravity is a great force(力量) that shapes the universe. On Earth, gravity makes apples fall from trees. It keeps your feet planted on the ground. The gravity in a black hole is much stronger. It is so strong that nothing around it can get away from it, not even light.
Black holes are invisible. We can't actually see them because they don’t throw back light. But scientists can find them with space telescopes (望遠鏡)and special tools. The strong gravity makes nearby stars move in a certain way. By studying how the stars move, scientists can find out if they are flying around a black hole. Strange things happen around black holes. This makes black holes a popular subject of science fiction(科幻) stories, although they are very unreal.
A black hole forms when a star dies. The star falls in on itself and turns into a very small point. Because of its small size and huge mass(質(zhì)量), the gravity will be so strong that it will pull light in and become a black hole. Black holes can grow huge as they continue to pull other things in and “eat” them. Many scientists believe that there are super-massive black holes at the center of galaxies, including the Milky Way.
The idea of the black hole was first suggested by two different scientists in the 18th century: John Michelle and Pierre-Simon Laplace. In 1967, a physicist named John Archibald Wheeler came up with the name “black hole”. Studying black holes can tell us many things about our galaxy and help scientists answer questions about the universe.
【1】The word “invisible” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________”.
A.far to goB.easy to findC.difficult to catchD.impossible to see
【2】The third paragraph is mainly about_________.
A.how big black holes areB.how heavy black holes are
C.how black holes are formedD.how black holes “eat” stars
【3】From the passage we learn_________.
A.a star's moving path can help scientists find a black hole
B.writers love writing about black holes because they are real
C.there aren't any black holes at the center of the Milky Way
D.John Archibald Wheeler found the first black hole in space
【1】D
【2】C
【3】A
We can't actually see them because they don’t throw back light.” “黑洞是……的,我們不能看到它們因為它們不反射光”。由此可知invisible意為can’t see,及“看不見的”。
A black hole forms when a star dies.
根據(jù)短文第二段中 “By studying how the stars move, scientists can find out if they are flying around a black hole.” 根據(jù)第二段 “This makes black holes a popular subject of science fiction(科幻) stories, although they are very unreal.”可知B不對;根據(jù)第三段 “Many scientists believe that there are super-massive black holes at the center of galaxies, including the Milky Way.”可知C不對;根據(jù)最后一段 “In 1967, a physicist named John Archibald Wheeler came up with the name “black hole”.
We can't actually see them because they don’t throw back light.” “黑洞是……的,我們不能看到它們因為它們不反射光”。由此可知invisible意為can’t see,及“看不見的”。

Lisa has been to Antarctica (南極洲). Here is what she wrote about the trip.
Tuesday December 2 We planned to go to Rothera (羅瑟拉站) that morning. We would stay there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on the earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all. We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather. It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly. |
Wednesday December 3 After waking up in Antarctica for the first time, I can understand why everybody who comes here loves the place. It is really beautiful. We are staying at Rothera Survey Base (基地) with mountains of ice all around. It’s about minus 2℃ today. It is very cold, but the regulars here are often seen walking around in T-shirt. |
Thursday December 4 I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here. It’s a bit colder today, about minus 5℃, but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course (課程) before we are allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill. |
Saturday December 6 Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket). The most wonderful thing about this place is how the scenery (風(fēng)景) changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there every day.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly and thankfully. |
【1】Lisa had a nervous wait in Stanley because of _____________.
A.Strong windsB.Thick clouds

【4】What impressed (使…印象深刻) Lisa most about Antarctica?
A.People walked around in T-shirtB.It was a beautiful and quiet place
C.The weather was sometimes warmD.The scenery changes every day
【5】According to the article, which of the following sentences is Not True?
A.Lisa will stay in Rothera Survey Base for about two weeks.
B.Lisa often sees the people wearing the thick jackets in the base.
C.Lisa can go snowboarding if she finishes the training course.
D.Lisa didn’t expect that the mountains of ice could move at first.
【6】The writing is most probably from Lisa’s __________.
A.notebookB.diaryC.homeworkD.book

Do you know about bio-plastic(生物塑料)?It is a kind of plastic. but it is not the same as normal plastic. Normal plastic is made from chemical materials and takes a very long time to degrade(降解). But bio-plastic is good for the environment. it is made by using bacteria(細菌) to process(加工)natural sources like vegetable oils, corn or sugar. It can degrade more easily.
But there is a problem with bio-plastic. The "food" that bacteria eat is what we eat. This means that bacteria are competing against humans for the same resources.
Now scientists have found a new way to make bio-plastic-using two kinds of bacteria and sunlight. According to Newsweek.
One of the bacteria can use sunlight to produce sugar. The other land eats the sugar and produces polymers(聚合物). Polymers are used to create bio-plastics. The way the bacteria store polymers is similar as humans store fats.
The new way to produce bio-plastic has many advantages. It is 20 times faster than the normal way we produce bio-plastic. Moreover, using these two bacteria saves resources.
The next problem scientists face is that they want to put their tab research into real-world practice. By doing this, bio-plastic made with these two bacteria can be widely produced in the future.
