【題目】 Family Traditions

What are your family tradition? The following information comes from several readers:

WINNIE: 2My favorite meal is spaghetti and meatballs. My mom usually cooks, but my dad and sister help. On my sister’s birthday, we eat pizza. On my mom’s birthday, we have chicken, and on my dad’s birthday we have steak. Of course, we always have a birthday cake, too.

DANNI: 3My family is really busy. We have a large family, and it’s not easy for everyone to get together at the same time. On that day, we go to a nice restaurant and we talk and talk and talk.

SUZIE: 4After dinner, we go to the living room and play a board game, such as Scrabble or Monopoly. We have about seven different ones we play, but we only play one game a night. I plan to keep this tradition after I start my own family.

ROB: 5I get up early and make something special, such as a mushroom omelet (蘑菇煎蛋卷)with fruit salad. Then I put it on a plate with a newspaper and a flower, and bring it to my mother for breakfast in bed. She always acts surprised, but I do it every year.

【題目】 When we are children, the holidays seem to last forever. But later, we may find that the time just seems to fly by. Why does time seem to pass faster as we get older?

According to the Daily Mail, our brains degrade as we get older. That decreases the amount of information we can deal with in a single day. “The human mind senses time changing when the perceived (被感知的) images change,” Adrian Bejan from Duke University, US, told the Daily Mail. “The present is different from the past because the mental viewing has changed, not because somebody’s clock rings.”

Infants (幼兒), for example, move their eyes much more often than adults because they’re processing (處理) images at a faster rate. They deal with a large amount of information and do many things in a single day. This makes them feel like a single day lasts for a long time. However, as people get older, fewer images are processed in the same amount of time. Therefore, older people receive less information during a day than younger people. This causes things to seem as though they’re happening more quickly.

Apart from the degradation of our brains, some psychological reasons also make us experience time differently.

People may measure time by the number of memorable events that can be recalled (回憶) within a certain period. When we think about our youth, we may remember a life packed with first—time activities, for example, our first time traveling without our parents, or our first date. We experienced these events so vividly that time then seems to us to have passed very slowly. According to David Eagleman of the Baylor College of Medicine in the US, recalling these memories makes us feel like they took forever.

Many adults find life is routine and sometimes dull. For this reason, when they look back, they might feel like there are not many exciting things to remember. Therefore, time seems to be moving faster to them.

1What does the underlined word “degrade” mean?

A.become betterB.become worse

C.remain the sameD.become smaller

2How do people sense time changing according to Adrian Bejan?

A.It depends on how their clocks change.B.It depends on how the views around them change.

C.It depends on how often they move their eyes.D.It depends on how they process images.

3What is the purpose of the fifth paragraph?

A.To tell us that first—time activities are vivid and memorable.

B.To tell us that first—time events can make time pass slowly.

C.To tell us that psychological reasons make people sense time differently.

D.To tell us that people should measure time by the number of memorable events.

4Why does time seem to pass faster as we get older?

A.Because our life will become routine and dull when we grow older.

B.Because the degradation of our brains will make it slower to recall memories.

C.Because we’ll deal with less information in the same amount of time.

D.Because we won’t have first—time activities.

【題目】 Summer is almost here and the weather is heating up. Are you drinking enough water? Many kids aren’t according to a new study in the American Journal of Public Health.

Erica Kenney a scientist at Harvard is the study’s leader. At the beginning she planned to look into the amount (數(shù)量) of sugary drinks that kids were drinking in schools. However during her research she found that many kids were simply not drinking enough water.

Kenney and her team examined data (數(shù)據(jù)) from a group of 4,000 children aged 6 to 19 between the years of 2012 and 2015. While examining the data she noticed that more than half of the kids didn’t drink enough water. Of that group boys were 76% more likely than girls to not have enough water in their system. Nearly one quarter of the kids reported drinking no plain water (白水) at all.

“These findings are very important because they point out a potential health problem that has not been given a lot of attention in the past.” Kenney said. “Even though for most of these kids this is not an immediate, serious health problem, this is a problem that could really have a harmful influence on health and life for many children years later.”

The human body is made up of 60% water. Not drinking enough water can lead to health problems like headaches or poor physical performance. Your body needs more water when you are in hot weather, after you do exercise ,and if you have a fever.

The United States National Agricultural Library says on average kids need between 10 to 14 cups of water every day. This water can come from both drinks and foods that have high amounts of water such as celery melon or tomatoes. It is also suggested that fluids (液體) come from water instead of sugary drinks that are high in calories (卡路里) and can lead to weight problems.

“The good news is that this is a public health problem with a simple solution.” said another scientist. Steven Gortmaker “If we can help children drink more water — a low cost no calorie fluid — we can improve their health which may allow many children to feel better throughout the day and do better in school.”

1What is Erica Kenney’s purpose of doing the study at the beginning?

A.To show that plain water is the best for kids.

B.To explain why kids love sugary drinks most.

C.To study if kids drink enough water at school every day.

D.To find out how much sugary drinks kids drink at school.

2What does the word “potential” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.Happening often.B.Relating(有關(guān)) to the past.

C.Causing bad results.D.Possible in the future.

3When do our bodies need more water according to the passage?

A.In cold weather or after doing exercise.B.In hot weather or after doing exercise.

C.Before breakfast, lunch and supper.D.When we feel tired or have a fever.

4The findings of the study may make people realize________.

A.the importance of kids’drinking enough waterB.the health problems sugary drinks bring to kids

C.the fact that boys need more water than girlsD.the necessity of kids’drinking some sugary drinks

5According to the passage we can know ________.
