We often praise science.
It explains the world and makes our lives easier with technology. One of the most exciting fields in science is artificial intelligence (人工智能) . This is an area where scientists are working on creating machines that can think like humans.
However, one of the most famous scientists has a very dark warning for us about this type of technology.
" The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," said Professor Stephen Hawking to the BBC.
Hawking is a well-known British physicist and author of the best-selling science book — A Brief History of Time. This warning came after commenting on the technology he uses to speak with. As Hawking suffers from a serious disease called ALS,he needs an AI computer to communicate. The computer learns how Hawking thinks and suggests the words he may want to use next.
This is a basic type of AI,which is very useful, yet Hawking fears the possibility of creatjng machines that can match or surpass human intelligence. And it's easy to imagine how terrible things may be. Many TV shows and films display big machines that are far cleverer than us. " Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution (進(jìn)化) ,couldn’t compete," said Hawking.
But not every scientist is pessimistic (悲觀的) about AI technology. ” I believe we will remain in charge of the technology for a long time”1 said Rollo Carpenter, the creator of Cleverbot in the UK,which is a software program that remembers past conversations. "The potential" of it to solve many of the world problems will be realized."

Throw a stone across the water and see how many times it skips (跳) .Have you played this game before? The more times the stone skips, the more cheers you will get. But do you know the secret behind its success?
With the help of high-speed cameras, scientists at Brigham Young University in the US have found out the secret skills of stone skipping.
The first step is to choose the right stone. " Use flat round stones (disc-shaped stones) , and find a weight that allows you to put a lot of spin on them," Tadd Truscott,an assistant professor, told The Huffington Post. Discs are usually easier to skip than rounded stones.
Then, here comes the key part: find the right angle. According to the Guinness World Records, the world record for stone skipping is 88 skips set in 2013 by an American called Kurt Steiner.
Professor Truscott said the skill depends on what angle the thrower chooses to throw a stone at. The best angle for discshaped stones is close to 20 degrees (度) . But the heavier the stone is,the flatter this angle should be.
If you find 20 degrees hard to measure, you can try another way. Give a great deal of backspin (下旋) to a rounded stone,so it will go under the water and then pop up and out of the water.
"To make it,you need to throw the stone at a much higher angle than for the usual skipping,M Truscott said to The Huffington Post.
