One year ago, I had a special English lesson hold at the railway station. It was quite different from the regular English classes we were familiar to, for we had no textbooks, no blackboard or no fixed seats.
Gathering at the entrance of the station, we told to collect as many English words and sentences as possible here. Curious and excited, we walked around the station and looked everywhere, search for any information in English. Whenever an English word comes into sight, the class would burst into the cheers as if we had discovered a new world. With the Chinese translation and vividly pictures, we could figure out its meaning with ease.
Now, this unforgettable lesson still encourages me to be an active learner where I go.

With more recognition than Halloween and less than Christmas,Valentine’s Day as an imported festival faces a dangerous situation in China, where it’s caught between forces of tradition and fashion.Valentine’s Day has a natural enemy in China. And it is not the Chinese equivalent, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month on the lunar calendar, usually around half a year away from February 14.It is the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, that will influence the Feast of Saint Valentine.
The real disagreement between East and West probably took place over a century ago, when China’s door was forced open by Western powers and Chinese scholars supported westernization as a means to strengthen our nation's ability to compete. The introduction of the solar calendar and Western measurements was both an acknowledgment of their influence and an effort to be accepted by the world order.
For a full century,we have had two systems running in parallel. When it comes to the eventual outcome, practicality usually beats all other concerns.Laws can help, such as the three traditional festivals of Tomb Sweeping, Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn gaining legal status in 2008 and giving every Chinese citizen a day off,but laws cannot push what people have no feelings for. Therefore, the celebration or boycott of imported holidays or homegrown ones should be no cause for worry. If they are irrelevant,no social media will change the public's mind; and if they are accepted, there must be a need which they happen to satisfy.
Since we have no global Qin Shihuang to force one system on every country,we can always rely on a dual (雙重的) approach by which we share with the outside world on one hand but preserve our own ways of life on the other.

Scientists claim to have developed a revolutionary new giant 3D concrete printer that can build a 2,500-square-foot house in just 24 hours.
The 3D printer, developed by Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis from the University of Southern California, could be used to build a whole house, layer by layer, in a single day.
"It is basically scaling up 3D printing to the scale of building," said Khoshnevis.
The giant robot replaces construction workers with a nozzle (噴嘴), which can quickly build a home based on a computer pattern, MSN News reported.
Contour Crafting, as it is named, is a layered fabrication (構(gòu)造) technology. Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be constructed in a single run, embedded (嵌入) in each house all the wires and pipes for electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning.
The potential applications of this technology are far-reaching including in emergency, low-income, and commercial housing.
"Our research also addresses the application of Contour Crafting in building habitats on other planets. Contour Crafting will most probably be one of the very few feasible approaches for building structures on other planets, such as the Moon and Mars, which are being targeted for human habitation before the end of the new century," researchers said on the project website.
The technology may potentially reduce energy use and emissions. And the main advantages of the Contour Crafting process over existing technologies are the superior surface finish that is realized and the greatly increased speed of construction.
1.Professor Khoshnevis has recently developed a 3D printer that can ________.
A. build a 2500-square-foot house in a single day
B. construct a skyscraper, layer by layer
C. design a group of houses automatically
D. assist construction workers in their work
2.The new 3D printer uses the following to build a house EXCEPT ________.
A. a nozzle B. a computer pattern C. a robot D. an air-conditioner
3.According to the text, the potential applications of Contour Crafting include building _______.
A. emergency vehicles B. low-income housing
C. commercial centers D. space stations on other planets
4.What advantages of this new technology is mentioned in the text?
A. It creates more jobs. B. It is less time-consuming.
C. It saves the building cost. D. It emits no carbon dioxide.
