Almost every family in America or England buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some
people buy as many as two or three different papers.
     Why do people read newspapers?
Newspapers supply us with news about events in our hometowns, in our country and in other parts
of the world. Today we can read about important things that took place in foreign countries on the same
day they happened, even in countries far away. But hundreds of years ago, news of things took months
or even years to travel from one country to another. In those times, news was often passed from one
person to another andnever entirely true. Newspapers today supply us with more than just what
happened in our country or in other countries.  If we want to know what the weather will be like, we
can read the weather reports. If we want to find out what films are being shown, or what plays or
concerts we can go to we can look in the newspapers.
In many countries people put notices in newspapers if they are trying to get a job, hunting for a house
or rooms that they can rent, or even when looking for a person who is lost.

One day, your child will need to earn a living. Kids can get an edge on the work world by starting
early and in doing so they will gain valuable experience working with different people. Also they can
learn about managing money-have some money to spend once they get older, or save for college.
But first ask yourself, is your child ready to work? Do they have the time, and won't it interfere with
their school work? If they are ready, then here are some jobs for kids to make money.
     BABY SITTER
If your child likes younger kids, then a baby sitter is a popular choice. Parents often need a good
and reliable baby sitter________. This position can be even expanded into a baby sitting service, by
joining together a group of people who can offer babysitting services to all the parents in the
neighborhood.
     PARENTS HELPER
A parents helper is similar to a baby sitter. However, if your child is too young to babysit on their
own, a job helping parents is a good opportunity. They can help watch someone's kids and assist with
the feeding, playing, or doing chores around the house. Later, once your child is older, they would likely
have gained some references for regular babysitting work.
     HOUSE CLEANING
Instead of a parents helper, your child could simply do house cleaning. There are many chores that
would be suitable such as vacuuming, dusting.

In order to be a success in the American business world, you must get along with people. You must
learn to behave yourself in such a way that you earn the affection and respect of others. As we have
already pointed out, Americans mix business and pleasure. Therefore, learning how to chat informally
(非正式地)can be a help with your American business contracts. Americans like to talk about a number
of different topics-sports, politics, cars, popular movies, television shows and personal interests.
Many large American cities have sports teams. If you are working with Americans in the United
States, it would be a good idea to find out about the local sports teams so that you can join in the almost
inevitable discussions about "What our team will do this year." Politics can be a sensitive topic unless
everyone is of the same mind politically. Limit your discussions to asking questions of your friends. Most
Americans are car owners and some are even obsessive(著迷的)about the subject. You can contribute
to the discussion by talking about cars you have owned or by sharing information you have had in
automotive magazines. Americans watch television almost every night and attend movies regularly, so
naturally TV programs and the latest movies become topics for discussions.
If you are unable to watch American television or attend American movies, reading the entertainment
section of such magazines as Time and Newsweek will keep you up to date on what is popular in
America.

People always think about "the problem of youth". If there is one-which I take leave to doubt-it is
older people who create it,not the young themselves.Let us get down to fundamentals and agree that the
young are after all human beings-people just like their elders. There is only one difference between an old
man and a young one:the young man has a beautiful future before him while the old man a splendid future
behind him and maybe that is where the rub is.
When I was a teenager,I felt that I was just young and unknown-that I was a new boy in a huge
school, and I would have been very pleased to be regarded as something so interesting as a problem. For
one thing, being a problem gives you a certain identify, and that is one of the things the young are busily
engaged in seeking.
I find young people exciting. They have an air of freedom, and they have not a dull promise to mean
ambitions or love of comfort. They are not anxious social climbers, and they have no devotion to important
things. All this seems to me to link them with life, and the origins of things. It's as if they were in some sense
of cosmic beings in violent and lovely contrast with us suburban (鄉(xiāng)村的) creatures. All that is in my mind when I meet a young person. He may be too proud, illmannered, selfconfident or selfsatisfied, but I do not
turn for protection to boring clich?s about respect for elders as if age were a reason for respect.I accept
that we are equals, and I will argue with them,as an equal,if I think he is wrong.

1. "The problem of youth" in Paragraph 1 means the problem________.

Sadness is unpleasant, and in a society where personal happiness is prized above all else, there is little
tolerance for falling in despair.Especially now we've got drugs for getting rid of sad feelings-whether it's
after losing a job, the breakup of a relationship or the death of a loved one.So it's no surprise that more
and more people are taking them.
But is this really such a good idea?A growing number of voices from the world of mental health
research are saying it isn't.They fear that the increasing tendency to treat normal sadness as a disease is
playing fast and loose (行為輕率). Sadness, they argue, serves a useful purpose-and if we lose it, we
lose out.Yet many psychiatrists (精神病醫(yī)生) insist not.Sadness has a nasty habit of turning into
depression (抑郁癥), they warn.Even when people are sad for good reason, they should take drugs to
make themselves feel better.
So who is right? Is sadness something we cannot live without or something horrible never to touch?
There are lots of ideas about why feeling sad should become part of human life.It may be a selfprotection
strategy, as other primates (靈長類) also show signs of sadness.A losing monkey that doesn't show
sadness after it loses a fight may be seen as continuing to challenge the winning monkey-and that could
result in death.
In humans, sadness has a further function:we may display sadness as a form of communication.By
acting sad, we tell other community members that we need support.
Then there is the idea that creativity is connected to dark moods. There are plenty of great artists,
writers and musicians who have suffered from depression or disorder.Scientists find that people with
signs of depression perform better at a creative task, and that negative moods make people think deeply
over the unhappy experience, which allows creative processes to come to the front. There is also evidence
that too much happiness can be bad for your career.A doctor found that people who scored 8 out of 10
on a happiness test were more successful in income and education than 9s or 10s.The happiest people
lose their willingness to make changes to their lives that may benefit them.

1. The underlined word "this" refers to________.

A. taking drugs
B. falling in despair
C. losing a job
D. feeling sad

2. The author believes sadness is________.
A. a good thing for people's health
B. something horrible never to touch
C. a necessary function of humans
D. always to be treated as depression

3. Some animals show their sadness in order to________.

A. cheat their enemy
B. protect themselves
C. comfort the loser
D. challenge the winner

4. We can infer from the last paragraph that________.

A. people with great creativity tend to be happier
B. unhappy experiences contribute to a greater career
C. too much happiness can be bad for your career
D. the happiest people are the most successful ones

When a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But
there are a few people who will get into their cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These
people are willing to risk(冒……危險) being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the
excitement of watching the storm close up.
"Storm  chasing (追逐 )"  is  becoming  an increasingly popular hobby (喜好) , especially in the
Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser
begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1 000
kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.
Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw
a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents
caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm- chasing
vacations during the storm season.
Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. "Storm chasing is 95% driving, " says
Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm- chasing. "sSometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers. "
However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. "When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight
you will ever see in your life, " says Jasper Morley. "Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It
is the greatest show on Earth. "

1. For storm chasing, the first thing storm chasers do  is to       .
A. head straight for the center of the storm
B. get into the car for safety

D. collect information about a coming storm

2. Beginners of storm chasing are advised         .
A not to drive in a heavy rain
B. to do it in an organized way

West Virginia-Public schools are using a dance video game to help get students in shape. In these
schools, students are often told to turn off their video games and get some exercise. The schools have
found a new way for their students to work out while playing a new video game. West Virginia is one
of the heaviest states in the country. About half of its fifthgraders are considered to be overweight, and
their parents are worried about that. To get them moving on a healthier path, the state's public schools
are using a video game called "Dance Revolution".
To use the game, players should stand on a special mat in front of a TV screen. Following arrows
on the screen, players must move their feet to the specific symbols on the mat. Players must move
quickly, touching symbols on the mat at just the right time. With each song, they get more exercise.
"If we can get children to change their behavior at a young age, they will hopefully grow up to be
healthy and active adults," said Carl Callison of Mountain State Blue Cross, a health care company.
West Virginia is ranked among the top three heaviest states. About a third of West Virginians are
considered to be  obese (肥胖的). Even more are considered to be overweight. Extra weight can lead

said Nidia Henderson, a manager for the public employees' insurance program. "That's a terrible thing
and not acceptable."

physical education classes and afterschool programs.

Do I really need a helmet just to ride to class?
First, ask your physics professor what can happen to a head dropped from the normal height where you
ride, say about 5 feet up, when it hits the walkway? He will tell you about the forces the head can experience
from that drop height. Bike helmets are tested in a two-meter drop, a little higher, but that five feet is all the
force you need to mess up your brain. You don't need forward speed at all, although it can make it worse.
Then think about accidents that happen when you ride on campus. Have you had near-collisions (碰撞)
or actual collisions with pedestrians as the students change class? Do you ever hurry to get to class and take
little chances? Have you ever seen a patch of ice or sand on a campus sidewalk? We would bet that you know
more risk factors than we do.
And what do the statistics say? There are 800 people killed on bikes, and a half million, more or less
injured, in the US every year. Nobody keeps track of how many of those were on a campus. But we do know
that you are making a major investment in yourself for a lifetime of good returns. People with head injuries
can remember how much more they were able to do mentally before the crash, and that hurts long after other
parts heal (愈合). The effects can last forever. At your age you are just beginning to realize how much
pleasure in life comes from being experienced, smart and educated. You don't want to take a chance with that.
It means a lot to you.
Helmets are cheap at Wal-Mart or Target, and the cheap ones work fine if you fit them carefully. It really
won't mess up your hair much in a short ride. Give it a try.
