It was a perfect day, just the right kind of day to go fishing
My 13-year-old son Jonathan and I had been     this trip for weeks, and now we were sitting on the shore of a beautiful lake.
We     and talked, and then, suddenly, I saw small waves     my float(浮子)had been. I waited, thinking it would pop right back up again, but the float stayed     the water and my heart started to beat    .After a few more seconds, my fishing rod was suddenly pulled off the stick it was leaning on    me and it was being     towards the water.
I firmly caught hold of the fishing rod and lifted it up. This fish was    ! Slowly, my son balanced on two rocks and leaned down to get the giant off the fishhook.
For just one second, he lost his     and reached up with his right hand to steady   . At that moment, our huge fish got off the fishing line and started to swim
I saw teas streaming down Jonathan's face. "Dad, I'm sorry. I'll never be able to   this up to you." I reached out and put my hands on his shoulders. I said the following     almost without thinking. "Jon, how did you feel    I was reeling(往卷軸上繞起)that fish in? Were you excited?" He nodded and said,"Dad,I've never been so   in my whole life!”I repied,
"Jon, wasn’t that about the most fun we've ever had together?" He nodded his head in
Then I said, "So, why should we let a fish getting away     possibly the best experience we've ever had? Let’s be happy about the fun we did have."
My son,     his arms around me, said,"Dad, I love you so much!”1     him back and said softly into his ear, "I love you too, Jon."
We     did catch that big fish. But I've known ever since that I didn't let the most important thing get away that day.

My job was to make classroom observations and encourage a training program that would enable students to feel good about themselves and take charge of their lives. Donna was one of the volunteer teachers who participated in this       .
One day, I entered Donna’s classroom, took a seat in the back of the room and       . All the students were working        a task. The student next to me was filling her page with “I Can’ts.” “I can’t kick the soccer ball.” “I can’t get Debbie to like me.” Her page was half full and she showed no        of stopping. I walked down the row and found        was writing sentences, describing things they couldn’t do.
By this time the activity aroused my       , so I decided to check with the teacher to see what was going on        I noticed she too was busy writing. “I can’t get John’s mother to come for a parents’ meeting.” I felt it best not to       .
After another ten minutes, the students were        to fold the papers in half and bring them to the front. They placed their “I Can’t” statements into an empty shoebox. Then Donna      hers. She put the lid(蓋子) on the box, tucked it under her arm and headed out the door. Students followed the teacher. I followed the students. Halfway down the hallway Donna got a shovel(鐵鏟) from the tool house, and then marched the students to the farthest corner of the playground. There they began to       . The box of “I Can’ts” was placed at the        of the hole and then quickly covered with dirt.At this point Donna announced, “Boys and girls, please join hands and        your heads.” They quickly formed a circle around the grave.
Donna delivered the eulogy (悼詞). “Friends, we gathered here today to        the memory of ‘I Can’t.’ He is        by his brothers and sisters ‘I Can’ and ‘I Will’.May ‘I Can’t’ rest in       . Amen!”
She turned the students        and marched them back into the classroom. They celebrated the        of “I Can’t”. Donna cut a large tombstone from paper. She wrote the words “I Can’t” at the top and the date at the bottom, then hung it in the classroom. On those rare occasions when a student        and said, “I Can’t,” Donna       pointed to the paper tombstone. The student then remembered that “I Can’t” was dead and chose other statement.

Some years ago when I was in my first year in college, I heard Salome Bey sing for the first time. The moment was exciting. Salome’s        filled the room and brought the theater to life. I was so        that I decided to write an article about her.
I        Salome Bey, telling her I was from Essence magazine, and that I wanted to meet her to talk about her career. She        and told me to come to her Studio next Tuesday. When I hung up, I was scared out of mind. I        I was lying. I was not a writer at all and hadn’t even written a grocery list.
I interviewed Salome Bey the next Tuesday. I sat there       , taking notes and asking questions that all began with, “Can you tell me…?” I soon realized that        Salome Bey was one thing, but writing a story for a national magazine was just impossible. The        was almost unbearable. I struggled for days        draft(草稿)after draft. Finally I put my manuscript(手稿)into a large envelope and dropped it into a mailbox.
It didn’t take long. My manuscript       . How stupid of me! I thought. How could I       in a world of professional writers? Knowing I couldn’t        the rejection letter, I threw the unopened envelope into a drawer.
Five years later, I was moving to California. While        my apartment, I came across the unopened envelope. This time I opened it and read the editor’s letter in       :
Ms Profit,
Your story on Salome Bey is fantastic. Yet we need some        materials. Please add those and return the article immediately. We would like to        your story soon.
Shocked, it took me a long time to     . Fear of rejection cost me greatly. I lost at least five hundred dollars and the chance of having my article appear in a major magazine. More importantly, I lost years of        writing. Today, I have become a full-time writer. Looking back on this       , I learned a very important lesson: You can’t        to doubt yourself.

Letting go of success
I want to make the most of every day. And, like most people, I've____ that the best way to do it is to let go of past failures. But that's not all. One can never fully ____ today while thinking too much about past successes, either. People never ____ while resting comfortably on their laurels (榮譽(yù)). The ___ is that sometimes our successes hold us back more than our failures!
I once ____ a story about the Oscar owner, actor Clark Gable. A friend ____ Gable one afternoon at the actor's home. She brought along her ____ son, who was playing happily with toy cars on the floor. He____ he was racing those cars around a great track, which in ____ was an imaginary circle around a golden statue (雕像). The small statue the boy played with was actually the Oscar Clark Gable ____ for his performance in the 1934 movie It Happened One Night.
When his mother told him the time had come to ____, the little boy asked the actor, “Can I have this?” ____ to the Oscar.
“Sure, ” he smiled. “It's yours.”
The horrified mother ____. “Put that back immediately!”
Giving the child the golden statue, Clark Gable said, “Having the Oscar around doesn't mean anything to me;   ____it does.” The actor seemed to know that past success could be a ____ hammock (吊床) upon which he may be tempted to____, rather than a springboard setting him to begin a new start.
You may have learned to let go of past ____ and mistakes in order to free the present. But will you forget past successes and achievements in order to free the ____? Will your past be a springboard or a restful hammock?
“I like the ____ of the future better than the history of the past,” said Thomas Jefferson. I ____. After all, the future, not the past, is where the rest of your life will be lived.

I will never forget the year I was about twelve years old. My mother told us that we would not be        Christmas gifts because there was not enough money. I felt sad and thought,“What would I say when the other kids asked what I'd        ?” Just when I started to        that there would not be a Christmas that year, three women        at our house with gifts for all of us. For me they brought a doll. I felt such a sense of        that I would no longer have to be embarrassed when I returned to school. I wasn't        .Somebody had thought        of me to bring me a gift. Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my        . Christmas there special and memorable, I       _ remembered the woman’s visit. I decided that I wanted to create that same feeling of        for as many children as I could possibly.
So I        a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125 orphans (孤兒)at the Christmas party. For every child,we wrapped colorful packages filled with toys, clothes, and school supplies,       with a child's name. We wanted all of them to know they were        .Before I called out their names and handed them their gifts,I        them that they couldn't open their presents        every child had come forward. Finally the        they had been waiting for came as I called out,“One,two, three. Open your presents!” As the children opened their packages, their faces beamed and their bright smiles       up the room. The        in the room was obvious, and   wasn't just about toys. It was a feeling —the feeling I knew         that Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit. I wasn't forgotten. Somebody thought of me. I matter.
