Teen peer pressure
Teen peer pressure is the influence a teen's social group has on him or her. As adolescents enter the teen years, they usually begin to focus more on their peers or friends. 【小題1】 Peers influence most aspects of a teen's life, including how teens dress, what music they listen to, and what kind of activities they are involved in.
【小題2】 Good friends can encourage teens to do well in school, get involved in positive activities, volunteer, eat healthy foods, and avoid drugs, alcohol, and other risky activities. Friends also help teens learn good social skills and better ways to communicate and work out problems. 【小題3】
Negative peer pressure is when teens feel pressured to do something they know is wrong, such as smoking, drinking, stealing, or cutting class. 【小題4】 This is because they want to be liked or fit in, they are afraid of being made fun of, or they want to try something other teens are doing.
It is important for teens to learn how to deal with peer pressure. There are a lot of things a teen can do to handle it. 【小題5】 Good friends use positive peer pressure to help you be your best self. Also you need to think about the consequences of your decisions and actions, such as if an activity might harm your health or get you into trouble. Or you can talk to your parents or a trusted adult about the kinds of peer pressure you face and listen to their advice. Remember that if just one teen stands up against negative peer pressure, usually others will join him or her, and learning to handle peer pressure gives teens more confidence.
A.Peer pressure is not always bad. |
B.They always give teens good advice. |
C.Teens may give in to negative peer pressure. |
D.Why it is important to deal with negative peer pressure? |

It’s important for everyone to learn how to apologize effectively. You might think a simple “I’m sorry” will take care of everything. 【小題1】 There are some situations in which you need to apologize properly.
Apologize truely.
Apologizing through a half-hearted “Sorry” will get you nowhere. 【小題2】 If you really want to apologize, you must do it truely. Accept the fact that you were in the wrong. 【小題3】
Contrary to what you might think, apologizing over and over again isn’t going to help, especially if you’re apologizing to someone who’s your boss.
Don’t wait too long to apologize.
One piece of advice on how to apologize effectively is to do it as soon as you realize your mistake. Some people put off giving an apology because they think it will save them from the offended (被冒犯的) person’s anger. However, that is just not polite. If you can’ t approach the person personally at once, send him or her a message first. 【小題4】
Don’t expect too much.
You can’t expect that person to forgive you immediately. If you’re going to apologize, you have to be prepared for the worst. The conversation isn’t going to be the most comfortable one either. 【小題5】
Learning how to apologize effectively is very important. It shows people that you are a very kind person.
A.Don’t apologize again and again. |
B.However, that’s not exactly true. |
C.Pay a visit to others ahead of time. |
D.You’d better prepare yourself for anything. |

Rock Climbing as Sport and Art
An estimated nine million people rock climb in the United States. Millions more take part in the activity around the world. 【小題1】 Others compete. Rock climbing can be dangerous. But there are many methods and protective devices that can increase a climber’s safety.
【小題2】 Climbers have to pull themselves straight up the face of very high rocks or walls. So they have to be strong enough to carry their own weight. And climbers sometimes have to hold on to rocks with only their fingers or toes.
There are several kinds of rock climbing. Traditional rock climbing is done outside. Climbers wear ropes and attach devices to the rocks as they climb many hundreds of meters up. They also connect their ropes to the devices. 【小題3】 Sport climbing is similar. However, in those cases the protective devices are permanently placed in the rock. There is also indoor climbing. Rock walls made of wood or concrete have places for the climber’s hands and feet.

Dear Seth,
You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can’t read, much less understand what I’m going to try to tell you in this letter. But someday, when you’re ready, I hope you will find some wisdom and value in what I share with you.
Life can be cruel
【小題1】 They’ll tease you or try to hurt you because you’re different.
There’s not much you can do except learn to deal with them, and learn to choose friends who are kind to you and who make you feel good about yourself. When you find friends like this, treasure them, spend time with them and love them.
Be open to life anyway
Yes, you’ll find cruelty and suffering in your journey through life, but don’t let that close you to new things. Don’t retreat from life, don’t hide or wall yourself off. 【小題2】
Life isn’t a competition
You will meet many people who will try to do better than you, in school , in college, at work. To them, life is a competition.
But here’s the secret: life isn’t a competition. 【小題3】 Learn to enjoy the journey and make it a journey of happiness, of constant learning, of continual improvement, of love.
【小題4】
If there’s a single word you should live your life by, it should be this: love. It might sound corny, I know, but trust me, there’s no better rule in life.
Love not only your loved ones, but your neighbors, your co-workers, strangers, your brothers and sisters in humanity. And most of all, love yourself and learn to love yourself for who you are.
【小題5】 You are starting out on an unknown, tiring, scary, but ultimately incredibly wonderful journey, and always remember I will be there for you when I can.
Love,
Your Dad

It often seems that people have a hard time in speaking a seemingly familiar name. Did you ever have someone's name on the tip of your tongue and yet you were not able to recall it? When this happened, what did you do? Next time this happens again, what should you do?
You should not try to recall it. Instead, just do something else for a couple of minutes and then the name may come into your head. Why? The name is just there, since you have met this person and learned his name. It, waiting there, only has to be dug out. The initial(最初的) effort to recall prepares the mind for operation, but it is the subconscious (下意識(shí)的) activities that go to work to dig up a dim(模糊的)memory. Forcing yourself to recall almost never helps because it doesn't loosen your memory; it only tightens it.
That’s why students find the preparatory method greatly helpful in examinations. They read over the questions before trying to answer any of them. Then they answer first the ones of which they are most confident. At the same time, deeper mental activities in the subconscious mind are taking place; work is being done on the more difficult questions. By the time the easier questions are answered, answers to the more difficult ones will usually begin to come into consciousness. It is often just a question of waiting for recall to come to the memory.
You see, forcing ourselves to think hard to recall something usually doesn’t help. Chances are that the harder we think, the more difficulty we face in thinking of what we want to. Offering our mind time to work is what we are expected to do.

Solution | They are 【小題2】______ not to try to recall it immediately. They can do something else for a while 【小題3】_____ of thinking hard about it. |
