I am a writer.I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke(喚起)an emotion,a visual image,a complex idea,or a simple truth.Language_is_the_tool_of_my_trade.And I use them all—all the Englishes I grew up with.

Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California,I've been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks.Like others,I have described it to people as “broken” English. But I feel embarrassed to say that.It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than“broken”,as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed,as if it lacked a certain wholeness.I've heard other terms used,“l(fā)imited English”, for example. But they seem just as bad,as if everything is limited, including people's perceptions(認(rèn)識)of the limited English speaker.
I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother's “l(fā)imited” English limited my perception of her.I was ashamed of her English.I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is,because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me:the fact that people in department stores,at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her,or even acted as if they did not hear her.
I started writing fiction in 1985.And for reasons I won't get into today,I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with:the English she used with me,which for lack of a better term might be described as“broken”:and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(內(nèi)在的)language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure.I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show:her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.

For many centuries, countless scholars have asked the question:What is beauty? As designers update the latest fashions and artists create their masterpieces, what is considered beautiful changes at an alarming pace.
Fifty years ago,the full-figured Marilyn Monroe was a symbol of the American aesthetic(美學(xué)的)value;today, many Hollywood actresses different in appearance from Marilyn’s have taken her place. However, aesthetic values not only differ from generation to generation, but do so along cultural lines as well. Often, what is considered disgusting to one civilization is just the aesthetic appeal in another. Thus it is difficult to give an absolute definition(定義)of beauty.
As fundamental(基礎(chǔ)的)physicists,my colleagues and I like to believe that we are involved in a search for a beauty that affects definition. The beauty that we search for is not what is set up through the work of people and subject to the tastes, but rather what has been laid down by nature Physics allows its students to look past outer appearances, into a deeper beauty. As a human being,I am attracted by the visual appeal of a wave crashing on the beach. As a physicist, however I am able to see the deeper beauty of the physical laws that govern such a phenomenon.
In truth, since Albert Einstein put forward the idea that there might be one main physical theory that governs the universe, aesthetics have become a driving force in modern physics. Einstein and other later physicists have discovered that:Nature, as its most fundamental level,is beautifully constructed. The extraordinary simplicity of the laws that govern the universe is really breathtaking . As Einstein said, it would seem more likely that we should find ourselves living in a“chaotic(無秩序曲)world,in no way graspable through thinking”. Yet we are now closer than ever to a full understanding of the universe’s beautiful clockwork. As new discoveries and technologies allow us to examine the physical world on deeper and deeper levels,we find that the beauty itself becomes much deeper.

Three engineers and three accountants (會計) are traveling by train to a conference. At the station, the three accountants each buy tickets and watch as the three engineers buy only a single ticket.

Jealousy (嫉妒) is a horrible feeling that weeds its way into your life and relationships before you know it. You might want something someone else has, or feel like they’re happier than you. It might seem like an uncontrollable emotion, but it’s truly not!
Remember your big accomplishments. If your coworker gets the promotion you wanted, it doesn’t mean you haven’t done great work. List out your accomplishments and think about how you got them and what you’ve done since then. You’ll quickly find that you’re just as worthy as the person you’re envying!
Appreciate your own good fortune. Think of where you are in your life and how you got there. Did you just buy your first car? Are you able to save one paycheck each month? Are you surrounded by loving family and amazing friends? You have a lot of good things, and you have a lot of good fortune coming your way. Stop letting jealousy eat you alive and realize that you can better spend that energy on furthering your own success and happiness.
Appreciate that others can do what you can’t. How boring would life be if everyone was the same? What if the entire population of your city was applying for your job, and they all had the same qualifications? Appreciate that everyone is different. Some people are better in powerful management positions, while maybe you’re better working with people. It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when young.
For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Old people worry more easily. Most of them plan things in advance, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble: it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents don’t like music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is natural enough , after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.
If you prefer to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
【小題1】_______ are to blame for the quarrels between parents and their children, according to this article.

A.ParentsB.Young people
C.Neither parents nor their childrenD.Both Parents and their children
【小題2】According to the passage, young people prefer to ______.
A.a(chǎn)sk for advice before they really start to do anything
B.do things without thinking carefully ahead.
C.be very strict with themselves
D.think in the same way as their parents do
【小題3】If a young man intends to control his own life, it’s better for him to _________.
A.do everything according to his own wish.
B.do everything the way his parents do.
C.do everything beyond hid parents’ control.
D.hold himself responsible for everything he does.

After students come home from a tiring day at school, they tend to worry a lot about their homework.
Whether students are working on English or chemistry homework, they are simply working on the assignment in order to get it done, attempting to memorize the concepts for the time being and do not absorb any of the information afterward. Students are wasting their time on insignificant assignments rather than effectively using that time to achieve other accomplishments. According to www.dailymail.com, many parents are concerned that homework is being assigned rather than being used to integrate (整合) what teachers are covering in the classroom. In their eyes, if less homework is assigned, students would have much less stress and could focus more on their passions and hobbies.
Homework gets in the way of participating in community service events as well as opportunities for getting a job or being a part of an extra-curricular activity. These responsibilities are important for teenagers to take on because they prepare the teenagers for the "real world." Without the proper exposure to work that is not school related, students will find themselves lost after they graduate. If homework were no longer given, students would have a lot more time to mature in other fields rather than being educated only on academics.
In spite of the fact that teachers want students to do better on tests and absorb the material that they are teaching, homework is not accomplishing its purpose. Because school is becoming increasingly more competitive and challenging, homework is becoming a setback rather than extra practice. Its removal would benefit the well being of teenagers as well as encourage them to get out in the "real world" and discover themselves instead of staring at a pile of assignments.
【小題1】Students are wasting their time on insignificant homework because

A.they are working on it carelessly and hurriedly
B.they attempt to get only part of the information memorized
C.they spend too much time doing it without understanding
D.they fail to take in the information after finishing it
【小題2】Many parents think that teachers should ______.

B.simplify what they teach in the classroom
C.reduce homework to develop students' own interests
D.a(chǎn)ssign more effective homework for students
【小題3】From the third paragraph, we can infer that homework might ______.
A.leave students lack of job opportunities
B.make students lose the sense of responsibilities
C.weaken students' social adaptation ability
D.cause students to feel lost after graduation

A.made simpler and easier
B.completely cancelled
C.connected with social activities
D.switched over to subject competitions

Over the past century, all kinds of unfairness and discrimination have been made illegal. But one popular form continues to exist, that is alphabetism (字母排序法). This, for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage, refers to discrimination against those whose surnames(姓氏)begin with a letter in the lower half of the alphabet.
It has long been known that the cars of a taxi firm called AAAA have a big advantage over Zodiac cars when customers look through their phone directories. Less well known is the advantage that Adam Abbot has in life over Zoe Zysman. English names are fairly spread between the halves of the alphabet. Yet a quite large number of top people have surnames beginning with letters between A and K.
Thus the American presidents and vice-presidents have surnames starting with B and  C separately and 26 of those before George Bush took office (including his father ) had surnames in the first half of the alphabet against just 16 in the second half. Even more striking, six of the seven heads of government of the G7 rich countries are alphabetically advantaged (Berlusconi, Blair, Bush, Chirac, Chretien and Koizumi). The world's three top central bankers ( Greenspan, Duisenberg and Hayami)are all close to the top of the alphabet, even if one of them really uses Japanese characters. The same case are the world's five richest men ( Gates, Buffet and so on) .
Can this merely happen by chance? At the start of the first year in primary school, teachers seat pupils, alphabetically from the front, to make it easier to remember their names. So shortsighted and small-sized Zysman junior gets stuck in the back row, and is seldom asked the improving questions by those teachers. At that time the alphabetically disadvantaged may think they have had a lucky escape. Yet the result may be worse qualifications, because they get less attention, as well as less confidence in speaking publicly.
The unfairness continues. At university graduation parties, the ABCs proudly get their awards first. However, by the time they reach the Zysmans most people are a little tired. Lists of job interviews and conference speakers and attendees all tend to be drawn up alphabetically, and their readers lose interest as they plough through them.
【小題1】What does the author intend to show with AAAA cars and Zodiac cars?

A.An example of competition of two kinds of cars.
B.Some advantages of AAAA cars in the taxi firm.
C.An example of unfairness caused by alphabetism.
D.Some disadvantages of Zodiac cars in the taxi firm.
【小題2】What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?
A.The alphabet is to blame for the failure of Zoe Zysman.
B.In both East and West, names are important to success.
C.Customers often pay a lot of attention to companies' names.
D.The discrimination in alphabetism can be found in many areas.
【小題3】The fourth paragraph suggests that         .
A.a(chǎn)lphabetically disadvantaged often escape from class
B.teachers should pay equal attention to all their students
C.questions are often put to the more intelligent students
D.students should be seated according to their eyesight
【小題4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.VIPs in the western world gain a great deal from alphabetism.
B.People with surnames beginning with N to Z are often misunderstood.
C.Putting things alphabetically may lead to unintentional unfairness.
D.The movement to get rid of alphabetism still has a long way to go.

For many of us, a little time with our smartphones or iPads before sleep is the highlight of the night. But would you still think it is relaxing if you knew that it damages or destroys your sleep? Scientists say that's exactly what it does.
In ancient times, when there were no lamps, telephones or smartphones, the sun was the main source of light. When the sun went down, our brains took that as a signal to start producing melatonin(褪黑素), a chemical that helps us sleep.
However, a healthy amount of melatonin can only be produced in complete darkness.Any light in your bedroom—even the one on the alarm clock or the charging indicator on your cellphone—could disturb the process, not to mention something as bright as smartphone and iPad screens. We tend to hold these much closer than a television or laptop, which allows them to shoot far more light straight into our eyes.
“This is particularly worrisome in populations such as young adults and adolescents, who already tend to be night_owls,” said researcher Brittany Wood at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.“Lack of sleep among teens is leading to depression, selfharm, low concentration and poor performance at school,” she added.
While all lights are the enemy of sleep, not all colors of light have the same effect. Our eyes are particularly sensitive to blue light, which is common during the day. Most of the light coming from electronic screens is blue light and it fools our brain into thinking it's still daytime. By contrast, orange or red light has less influence on melatonin production, because our brains recognize it as a signal that the day is ending, according to The Telegraph.
Asking yourself to keep your hands off your smartphone before bedtime might seem unreasonable, but you should at least remember to dim the screen or hold it farther away from your eyes. You could also wear a pair of orange sunglasses that take away the harmful blue light.
【小題1】According to the passage, we can know ________.

A.it's a good habit to play with smartphones or iPads late into night

B.The lighter it is, the more melatonin will be produced.
C.The more melatonin you have, the worse you'll sleep.
D.The more electrical equipment you have, the more melatonin will be produced.
【小題3】The underlined part in Paragraph 4 refers to those ________.
A.who are young adults or adolescents
B.who don't perform well in school
C.who are addicted to a television or laptop
D.who are short of sleep at night and perform poorly in daily life
