A few years ago,I had to stay at the hospital for three days for a medical test.I 1(ask) to stay awake for more than 30 hours because of the test.It could be 2(extreme) difficult for anyone. And I didn't believe I could make it.My mother said she would accompany me.But I knew even 3 my mother accompanying me,it wouldn't be easy.

To my surprise, that afternoon 4 my mom came to my room, she had my friend Susan with her. That afternoon Susan called my mother. As soon as she 5 (hear) I needed to stay awake for so long, she decided to help me.So she offered 6(come) to the hospital to stay with me and help keep me awake.Things became much 7 (easy) than I had imagined with Susan's help. She told me stories and jokes, and time passed very quickly.

Without Susan's help,8 whole stay in the hospital would have been much more difficult. And our 9(friend) became deeper from then on.I think nothing can keep us apart.I'm so 10 (thank) that I have such a friend.

1was asked

2extremely

3with

4when

5heard

6to come

7easier

8the

9friendship

10thankful

1was asked

故用was asked

2extremely

with sb.doing sth. 故填with。

4when

故填when。

5heard

6to come

短語offer to do sth.

故用the。

9friendship

Food is one of the necessities in our daily life. It serves as a form of communication in two fundamental ways. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a specific meaning, and play a significant role in a family or culture's celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat—and when and how we eat them—are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between countrysides and cities within one country.

Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition hits its roots in the custom of sharing bread.

Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, pieces of corn bread represent blocks of gold for prosperity (興旺) in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which signifies (預(yù)示) success in the New Year for the person who receives it.

Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and welcome their child in a celebration that includes giving red-colored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to represent family unity.

Nutrition is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world.

1According to the passage, sharing bread______.

A. can help to develop unity B. indicates a lack of food

C. is a custom unique to rural areas D. has its roots in birthday celebrations

2The author explains the role of food in celebrations by______.

C. using examples D. describing processes

3What is the passage mainly about?

A. The custom of sharing food. B. The specific meaning of food.

C. The role of food in ceremonies. D. The importance of food in culture.

Five Things Nobody Told Me about College
As I type this, I am in my university dorm room. A year ago, when I was awaiting to hear the results of my college applications, I often went to websites for some type of insider look on what college would be like. However, there’s only so much that prep books, websites, and older friends can teach. Here are the top 5things nobody told me about college:

Nobody entering a university knows exactly what they want to study. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying and will probably change what they want to purse within the first quarter of attendance. During my first quarter at University of California, Riverside (UCR), I thought that I wanted to study Political Science with its focus on International Affairs, so that's what I applied for. However, once I worked with statewide and local government, I realized that a better fit for me would be Public Policy, and now I am in the process of changing my area.

In college, there are so many good chances for you to meet your expectations. However, there is a very important difference between wanting to do something and applying for something. In order for you to take advantage of the conferences, research, internships, and fellowships that your university offers, apply! Step into your academic advisor's office, introduce yourself, and begin making the valuable connections that are necessary to help during the rest of your college career. Great things happen when you step out of your comfort zone, and you would be surprised on how many chances exist if you just ask.

College is where you meet your bridesmaids, neighbors, and potential bosses. The relationships you develop now will probably be linked to the ones you value later, so be wise about the people who you invest yourself in. You are only one person, and you do not have time to waste on people who would rather cause drama or mess up with your purpose. Surround yourself with uplifting individuals who challenge you to be better while loving you for who you are, and be patient to the people who are the complete opposite of that description.

As a first-year, I was afraid to make any noise towards campus issues that I noticed. It was not until I became involved in student government that I gained the confidence to handle projects that I created with the help of ASUCR Office of the President. During my first quarter, I spoke directly to the Chancellor, asking him for support towards my initiatives, met with the Vive Chancellors, and cooperated with my teaching assistances to begin my undergraduate research protect. Nothing good will happen when you are silent.

At my high school, there were about only four active club and organizations that students could be a part of. Imagine my surprise when I stepped foot onto UCR’s campus, where over 400 organizations exist, ranging from political organizations to karate club. You are not paying all or your tuition(學(xué)費)to merely go to class, study, pass tests and graduate. Make something worthy out of your experience. Create that you will want to tell your grandchildren one day. It all begins here, by signing up to join an organization.
