It was raining. I went into a cafe and asked for a coffee.  36 I was waiting for my drink, I realized there were other people in the place, but I sensed   37 . I saw their bodies, but I couldn’t feel their souls 38  their souls belonged to the  39  .
I stood up and walked between the tables. When I came to the biggest computer, I saw a thin, small man   40  in front of it. “ I’m Steve, ” he finally answered after I asked him a couple of times what his name was. “ I can’t talk with you. I’m  41 ,” he said. He was chatting online and,  42  , he was playing a computer game –a war game. I was  43  .
Why didn’t Steve want to talk with me? I tried  44 to speak to that computer geek(怪人),  45   not a word came out of his mouth. I touched his shoulder, but no reaction(反應(yīng)). I was   46  . I put my hand in front of the monitor, and he started to shout “ 47 ! ”
I took a few steps back, wondering if all those people in the cafe were looking at me. I   48  , and saw nobody showed any interest.
49  , I realized that the people there were having a nice conversation with their machines, not with people. They were more   50  having a relationship with the   51  , particularly Steve. I wouldn’t want to  52  the future of human beings if they preferred sharing their lives with machines   53  with people.
I was worried and sank in my thoughts. I didn’t even   54  that the coffee was bad,  55  Steve didn’t notice there was a person next to him.

My husband and I insisted that our children were old enough to clean their rooms and make their beds. But they thought   1 . My complaints, even self-justified(自有道理)  2 , were always landing on   3  ears. Very often a whole hour’s scolding would end with their   4  into tears. I felt very frustrated. I realized I needed to   5  my method of “mothering”.
One day when they were at school, I spent some time tidying their rooms. On their desks, in plain   6 , I left the cards: “Dear Bill(the other card was   7  to Sarah), your room was messy this morning and I’m sure you like it clean. Love, the Room Fairy.”   8  arriving back, the children were   9  excited to receive the little note from the Room Fairy. The next day, their rooms were fairly tidy. Sure enough, there was another note from the Room Fairy   10  for them, thanking them for their nice “gift” of a clean room and   11  asking them to play a certain violin   12 . Each day, thank-you notes would be written differently to keep the ideas   13
Sometimes the Room Fairy would propose a little   14 : “If you can finish your homework and go over your lessons before dinner, I’d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight.” Sometimes some colored markers or other little items would be left in   15  of well-done jobs the day  16 .
17  I can’t remember how long “the Room Fairy” continued leaving her love notes. When they were age appropriate, we used various versions of Post-Its (貼條). The bathroom mirror became the  18  centre of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lesson schedules, and changes in plans could be  19 .
We all benefited from and   20  the idea of sharing reminders and daily details of life through notes. I believe the true advantage of the Room Fairy notes survives in our frequent and enjoyable communication.

Once there was a young woman who didn’t like her job. Everyday when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss. “Leave that job,” her husband told her.
“Oh, I will,” she said. “But not yet. I have too many friends there for me to leave.” And so she remained unhappy at work until the years became decades and her children had children. “Leave that job,” her grandchildren told her. “Oh, I will,” she said. “But not yet. There are only seven more years until I reach thirty years of service and can retire. So I can’t just yet.”
I know this woman. And her story reminds me of an old dog half asleep on the porch of a general store, moaning and groaning in the sun. “Why is your dog acting that way?” a customer asked the store owner. “Oh,” answered the man. “He’s lying on a nail.” “Well, why doesn’t he move?” “Because it’s not hurting him bad enough.”
That’s true for people, too. We convince ourselves the pain is not bad enough to leave the workplace we know. But we’re wrong. Prolonged work pain is continuing. Some work pain damages our self-esteem, kills our passion or destroys our dreams.
Wilbur Wright once commented, “We could hardly wait to get up in the morning. I know that exhilarating feeling of being so passionate about something I was working on that I couldn’t wait to get back to work. And people who are winning at working know that kind of passion, too.”
They get excited about work. They offer their unique gifts and talents eagerly. And when things don’t change as they sometimes will, they refuse to let environment hijack(劫持) their self-esteem, passion or dreams.

When my grandmother was raising me in Stamps,Arkansas, she had a particular routine(慣例)when people who were known to be whiners entered her store. My grandmother would ask the customer,“How are you doing today,Thomas?” The person would reply,“Not so good today, Henderson. You see,it’s this summer heat.I just hate it.It just makes me tired. It’s almost killing me.”Then my grandmother would stand calmly, her arms folded, and say,“Uh-huh,uh huh.”
As soon as the complainer was out of the store,my grandmother would call me to stand in front of her. Then she would say the same thing she had said at least a thousand times,it seemed to me.“Jane, did you hear what so-and-so complained about?”And I would nod.Grandmother would continue,“Jane, there are people who went to sleep all over the world last night, poor and rich and black and white, but they will never wake again. Those dead people would give anything, anything at all for just five minutes of this weather that person was complaining about. So you watch yourself about complaining,Jane. What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing is change it.If you can’t change it,change the way you think about it.Don’t complain.”
