7.My grandparents were married for over half a century, and played their own special game the time they had met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word"shmily"in a surprise place for the other to find. They took turns leaving"shmily"around the house, and as soon as one of them discovered it,it was their turn to hide it once more. They dragged"shmily"with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers to await whoever was preparing the next meal."Shmily"was written in the steam left on the mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. There was no end to the places where"shmily"would pop up.Little notes with"shmily"were found on car seats,or taped to steering wheels. The notes were put inside shoes and left under pillows."Shmily"was written in the dust upon the mantel(壁爐架)and traced in the ashes of the fireplace. This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents'house as the furniture.
It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents'game.Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love-one that is pure and lasting. However,I never doubted my grandparents'relationship. It was based on passionate(熱情的)affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience.
But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents'life:my grandmother had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared ten years earlier. As always,Grandpa was with her every step of the way.He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so that she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she could not leave the house anymore. Then one day, what we all feared finally happened.Grandma was gone.
"Shmily."It was written in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother's funeral bouquet(花束).As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave,Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother's coffin and, taking a shaky breath,he began to sing to her.Through his tears and grief, the song came;S-h-m-i-l-y:See How Much I Love You.

SHMILY:See how much I love you(知道我有多么愛你),那種純潔且歷久彌堅(jiān)的愛.

根據(jù)第一段第四、五句的"…through the sugar and flour containers to await…in the steam left on the mirror after a hot shower"可知,單詞"shmily"可以在盛面的容器里或是鏡子上被發(fā)現(xiàn),故選A.
根據(jù)第一段的內(nèi)容,尤其是"and played their own special game the time they had met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word"shmily"in a surprise place for the other to find."
所以短語"pop up"是A選項(xiàng)appear"出現(xiàn)"的意思,故選A.
Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love---one that is pure and enduring"可知,作者最初懷疑真愛的存在,故選C.
He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so that she could always be surrounded by sunshine,"可知,爺爺通過把房間粉刷成黃色的來盡力使奶奶舒服,故選B.

11.Franz Kafka wrote that"a book must be the ax (斧子) for the frozen sea inside us."I once shared this sentence with a class of seventh graders, and it didn't seem to require any explanation.
We'd just finished John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men.When we read the end together out loud in class,my toughest boy,a star basketball player, wept a little, and so did I."Are you crying?"one girl asked,as she got out of her chair to take a closer look."I am,"I told her,"and the funny thing is I've read it many times."
But they understood. When George shoots Lennie, the tragedy is that we realize it was always going to happen. In my 14years of teaching in a New York City public middle school,I've taught kids with imprisoned parents, abusive parents, irresponsible parents; kids who are parents themselves; kids who are homeless; kids who grew up in violent neighborhoods. They understand, more than I ever will, the novel's terrible logic-the giving way of dreams to fate (命運(yùn)).
For the last seven years,I have worked as a reading enrichment teacher, reading classic works of literature with small groups of students from grades six to eight.I originally proposed this idea to my headmaster after learning that a former excellent student of mine had transferred out of a selective high school-one that often attracts the literary-minded children of Manhattan's upper classes-into a less competitive setting. The daughter of immigrants, with a father in prison, she perhaps felt
uncomfortable with her new classmates.I thought additional"cultural capital"could help students like her develop better in high school, where they would unavoidably meet, perhaps for the first time, students who came from homes lined with bookshelves, whose parents had earned Ph.D.'s.
Along with Of Mice and Men,my groups read:Sounder,The Red Pony,Lord of the Flies,Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The students didn't always read from the expected point of view.
About The Red Pony, one student said,"it's about being a man,it's about manliness."I had never before seen the parallels between Scarface and Macbeth, nor had I heard Lady Macbeth's soliloquies (獨(dú)白) read as raps (說唱),but both made sense; the interpretations were playful, but serious.Once introduced to Steinbeck's writing, one boy went on to read The Grapes of Wrath and told me repeatedly how amazing it was that"all these people hate each other, and they're all white."His historical view was broadening, his sense of his own country deepening.Year after year, former students visited and told me how prepared they had felt in their first year in college as a result of the classes.
Year after year, however,we are increasing the number of practice tests. We are trying to teach students to read increasingly complex texts, not for emotional punch (碰撞) but for text complexity.Yet,we cannot enrich (充實(shí)) the minds of our students by testing them on texts that ignore their hearts. We are teaching them that words do not amaze but confuse. We may succeed in raising test scores, but we will fail to teach them that reading can be transformative and that it belongs to them.
